Here is a look at this year’s Tri-Valley East all-conference baseball team, as selected by league coaches. When Essexville Garber and Frankenmuth cross paths on the softball diamond, buckle up for a doozy. The Dukes and Eagles squared off in three thrillers, each carrying championship implications. Now district champion Garber and league champion Frankenmuth are recognized for their excellence, leading the way on the 2022 Tri-Valley East all-conference softball squad. Millington had little trouble winning the Montrose regional, starting with a 16-0 win over New Lothrop. Last season, Richmond won the Division 3 state title after overcoming Millington in a regional final, 2-1, in nine innings. Essexville Garber claimed a Division 2 softball regional title, its first since 1997, turning two Frankenmuth seventh-inning line drives into three outs and a 3-2 win in the championship game Saturday at Garber. Garber, which scored four runs in the seventh inning to claim a 4-2 regional semifinal win over Linden, jumped on Frankenmuth ace Brooklyn Compau for three runs in the first, all with two outs. 9 hitter gets on to lead off the seventh, and we have Maggie (Thiel) and Tiffany (Keller) up next … so I’m feeling pretty good,” Frankenmuth coach Brad Walraven said. FRANKENMUTH, MI — The Frankenmuth Bavarian Festival is back. Events and attractions included in the festival are the Bavarian Festival Princess Coronation Dinner, live music, vendors, street activities, fireworks, food trucks and parades. You’re swimming in sparking blue water at your local public pool, and you have a cool, refreshing cocktail in hand. State lawmakers have proposed legislation that would change the state’s law to allow swim-up bars at public pools, including hotels and other tourist attractions. House Bills 5983 and 5984 would allow public swimming pools in Michigan to serve food and beverages to swimmers under certain safety guidelines. State Rep. Rodney Wakeman, R-Frankenmuth, who co-sponsored the bills, said permitting swim-up bars would help boost Michigan’s tourism industry. Under current state law, pool operators are prohibited from serving food and beverages in a public swimming pool.

The Frankenmuth sophomore crushed two homers Saturday, leading the fifth-ranked Eagles to a 10-0 five-inning win over a sixth-ranked Clio team that beat Frankenmuth, 2-1, exactly one week earlier. “I wasn’t surprised we won, but I think everybody was expecting a 2-1 or 3-2 game,” Frankenmuth coach Brad Walraven said. But with Brooklyn Compau at first to lead off the second inning, Schafsnitz cleared the 200-foot fence in centerfield to give Frankenmuth a 2-0 lead. Both Clare track teams claimed team titles in Saturday’s Division 3 Michigan Interscholastic Track Coaches Association state meet at Brookwood Athletic Complex in Clare. St. Louis had two individual winners, with Ignatius Jackson winning the 100-meter dash in 11.36 seconds. Clare nosed out St. Louis to win the girls team title with 900 points, followed by St. Louis with 814.5 points. The Frankenmuth Dog Bowl, located adjacent to the River Place Shops, hosted several competitions for dogs and their owners to participate and even qualify for the DockDogs National Championship in October out west. Friends and families flooded the Dog Bowl with their man’s best friend at their side as the competitions went on throughout the day. Defending state champion Frankenmuth made its depth pay off Friday, claiming the Michigan Interscholastic Track Coaches Association boys team track state title at Fowlerville. The team of Logan Lipka, Bryce Smith, Jonah Sholten and Travis Brenner won in 3 minutes, 31.47 seconds. Freeland won the 3,200 relay in 9:52.56 with the team of Whitney Farrell, Karie Keefer, Kiera Hansen and Mara Longenecker. Tara Richardson led the 7-8 Hawks with six goals, with Abby Buchalski adding four goals and Molly Basil two goals. West led 1-0 at halftime before Kennedy Thurlow scored for the 7-7-4 Chemics.

Frankenmuth finished off its second consecutive Tri-Valley Conference East softball championship, sweeping Alma to finish the conference season with an undefeated record. Ellie DuRussel earned the win, giving up five walks, three hits and two earned runs and striking out 14. Chesaning made five errors in the second game. In the second game, Evelynn Rybicki and Jenna Kowalski had four hits each, with Rybicki adding a homer and five RBIs. Frankenmuth took its first step toward defending its Division 2 boys track state title Friday, running away with the regional championship at Frankenmuth. The Eagles finished with 171 points, outdistancing St. Clair (89) and Clio (60.2). Marysville won the girls regional with 100 points, followed by North Branch (89) and Frankenmuth (80).

Frankenmuth junior Brooklyn Compau threw a no-hitter Tuesday, striking out nine as Frankenmuth remained undefeated in the Tri-Valley Conference East with a 16-0 softball win over Birch Run. Compau struck out nine in the six-inning mercy win. Maggie Thiel led the Eagles’ offense with four hits, three runs and two RBIs, with Emily Worden adding three hits. Kendall Thompson hit a homer and scored three runs, while Compau drove in three runs.

FRANKENMUTH, MI — The Frankenmuth Dog Bowl returns to Michigan’s Little Bavaria for Memorial Day weekend, Saturday and Sunday, May 28 and 29. Event organizers expect more than 100,000 visitors to attend this free festival, which takes place at Frankenmuth River Place Shops, 925 S. Main St. While admission to the Frankenmuth Dog Bowl is free, some events, such as the annual Canine Cruise on the Cass River, require a registration fee. The Chargers will play as an independent in football and teams on the 2022 schedule include 2021 playoff teams Detroit Country Day, Saginaw Heritage, Pontiac Notre Dame Prep and Frankenmuth. Two Saginaw Valley League opponents, Saginaw United and Saginaw Heritage, will remain on Powers’ schedule again this season. Powers athletic director Watson said it wasn’t difficult finding teams to play in the first two weeks and final three weeks of the season. The challenge was lining up opponents in weeks 4-7 since that’s when teams usually play league games.

The Frankenmuth softball team finished off a perfect tournament Saturday, knocking off No. Brooklyn Compau got the win against USA, striking out 11 in seven innings, giving up three hits and one walk. The Eagles scored runs in the sixth and seventh to beat Lakeshore, coached by former Frankenmuth star Libby Poellet Cody. In a 5-0 win over Whitehall, Nate Booms threw seven shutout innings, striking out seven and allowing four hits. In a 12-0 win over Ludington, Logan Kipfmiller earned the five-inning win, allowing two hits and striking out five.

Freeland handed sixth-ranked Frankenmuth a pair of baseball defeats Thursday, thanks to some relief work from the Duley brothers. In the first game, Frankenmuth held a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning before Jacob Kundinger hit a three-run triple to take the lead. Drew Titsworth started for Frankenmuth and struck out 10 in 4 2/3 innings, giving up two runs on four hits. In the second game, Parker Grzegorczyk led the offense with three hits, while Campau added a double and homer. In the second game, Owen Wendt gave up one run on five hits over four innings, striking out five.

The 2022 boys golf season has begun, with Saginaw-area golfers ready to make a run at the state tournament. The state finals are June 10-11, with tournaments at Ferris State (Division 1), Grand Valley State (Division 2), The Fortress in Frankenmuth (Division 3) and Michigan State’s Forest Akers West (Division 4).

Frankenmuth girls basketball coach Joe Jacobs was named the Associated Press Division 2 Coach of the Year as part of the all-state teams announced Wednesday. Detroit Edison star and Miss Basketball winner Ruby Whitehorn was named the AP Division 2 Player of the Year. Jacobs, a Frankenmuth High School graduate, was 66-83 in seven seasons as a varsity boys basketball coach at Saginaw Nouvel, Clio and Flushing. In two seasons as the Frankenmuth girls basketball coach, the Eagles are 40-5. The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a flood warning for both the Cass River in Saginaw County and the Rifle River in Arenac County. The NWS is forecasting that the Cass River will remain under a flood warning until the afternoon on Saturday, March 26. Flood stage for the river 17 feet, which is when the river begins to overflow its banks in places, flooding adjacent low lands. According to the NWS, the Rile River’s flood warning will be in effect until late Saturday morning. The Rifle River’s flood stage is 6 feet and at 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, the river was reported to be at a maximum 24-hour stage of 7.8 feet.

FRANKENMUTH, MI — Already, state House Rep. Rodney Wakeman is feeling comfortable in new surroundings. The Republican lawmaker recently moved his family from Saginaw Township to Frankenmuth. If all goes according to plan, settling into the new house will precede Wakeman familiarizing himself with a somewhat new constituency, he said.

FRANKENMUTH, MI — A German-themed bar and grill will celebrate Ireland for a change this week. Organizers with Michigan on Main Bar and Grill, 713 S. Main in Frankenmuth, will recognize St. Patrick’s Day by providing Irish-themed food and live music as well as prize giveaways Thursday, March 17. The bar and grill — located inside Frankenmuth’s Bavarian Inn Restaurant — will open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday. The day-long celebration also will feature prize giveaways, including gift certificates for the Bavarian Inn Restaurant.
