Michigan to launch over 30 new, no-cost coronavirus (COVID-19) testing sites
The state of Michigan plans to expand coronavirus (COVID-19) testing with more than 30 new sites across the state in the coming weeks. Additional testing sites planned for Benton Harbor, Grand Rapids, Lansing, Muskegon, Niles, Saginaw and Wayne are expected to be operational in the coming weeks. Thats why we are working to remove as many barriers as possible to ensure COVID-19 testing is accessible for all Michiganders, said Gov. Video shows โdust devilโ whirling in Michigan
MIO, Mich. โ Itโs a bird, itโs a plane -- wait, no -- itโs a dust devil! Thatโs right -- because 2020 just isnโt ready to stop delivering surprises, a dust devil was captured on video in Northern Michigan over the weekend. The National Weather Service in Gaylord posted video sent in by Tyra Berger in Mio, Michigan (about 30 miles east of Grayling), showing a dust devil whirling around near a McDonaldโs restaurant. A dust devil is defined as: A small, rapidly rotating wind that is made visible by the dust, dirt or debris it picks up. Also called a whirlwind, it develops best on clear, dry, hot afternoons.

GRAYLING, Mich. โ Not many people have come face-to-face with a bear enough to understand how scary of a situation it can be. Heather Willobee said it wasnโt the first time she crossed paths with a bear, but April 18 was different. "But I also knew she wasnโt coming alone and that something big was right behind her.โA 300 pound black bear had tussled with Lucy and was chasing her home. Willobee said she was able to get Lucy inside and realized she needed to go to the vet immediately, but the bear was still outside. Once Lucy was in the backseat, Willobee turned around and saw the bear was back.
Northern Michigan man charged with possession of meth
MONTMORENCY COUNTY, Mich. โ A Northern Michigan man was arrested by state police for possession of methamphetamine, officials said. Michigan State Police troopers conducted a traffic stop around 8 p.m. Feb. 23 on M-32 near Hall Road in Avery Township, officials said. There were four people in the car, including Marcus Allen Mackay, 36, of Grayling, Michigan. Mackay was arrested for possession of meth, according to authorities. Mackay was arraigned at 88th District Court in Montmorency County and charged with possession of methamphetamine, a felony with a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $15,000 fine.
Michigan Dads rifle fires, injuring 2 boys on deer hunting opener
GRAYLING, Mich. Police say two boys were injured when a gun discharged while their father was preparing to go hunting on opening day. Sheriff Shawn Kraycs says the trigger went off Friday when the man put the rifle into its cover. The bullet went through a wall at the home in Crawford County. Fragments injured a 6-year-old boy and a 4-year-old boy. The sheriff tells WPBN/WGTU-TV that the 29-year-old father was absolutely devastated. Kraycs says the man knew it could have been a heck of a lot worse.
Metro Detroit firefighters, paramedics training to go into dangerous shooting scenes
Some communities are preparing firefighters and paramedics to go into dangerous shooting scenes, hoping to save more victims. If you have ever paid close attention to videos from mass shootings you may have noticed the medical teams are far away in safety areas. But for one Shelby Township tactical response unit training at Camp Grayling what's also different is who's with them. They can bleed out in less than a minute," said Lt. Doug Rose, of the Shelby Township Police Department. We're told Shelby Township officers have already put the special training they received in Camp Grayling into practice.
Police seek felon wanted in northern Michigan
GRAYLING, Mich. - Michigan State Police are seeking a wanted felon who is known to frequent northern areas of the state. Police said Casey Helsel, 37, is wanted for felonious assault, two counts of fleeing and eluding, obstruction of justice and absconding from parole. Helsel is described as 5 feet, 10 inches tall with brown hair and brown eyes. Anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to contact the MSP Gaylord Regional Dispatch nonemergency line at 989-732-5141. Police said anyone assisting Helsel to avoid arrest will be charged with assisting/harboring a known felony fugitive.
