The perception given was not actually true.”Lavender recently moved back into the Orchard East community to play a role in its revitalization. “The Orchard East neighborhood does not have the amenities to bring in businesses, and to help secure long-term homeowners and to bring new homeowners into the neighborhood,” Kasprzak said. “Really, that’s right on the cusp of entering the Orchard East neighborhood... the MAECO site has been a high priority of ours over the past two or three years.

Crowns Against Cancer: Helping put smiles on faces of kids who need it most

You might remember reading about 4-year old Lena back when she was one of the many kids kicking cancer. “What our mission is -- we send children’s favorite characters to visit them,” said Crowns Against Cancer co-founder Ilinca Caluser. Initially the organization just visited children fighting cancer but now includes any child with any illness or special needs. During the pandemic they are seeing children beyond Metro Detroit and Michigan. “The Carr Center is a multi-disciplinary arts organization,” said Sarah Norat-Phillips, from the Carr Center.

‘Hood Closed to Gentrifiers’ street sign gains popularity in Detroit neighborhood

DETROIT – A street sign that popped up in Detroit is gaining a lot of attention. The sign read, “Hood Closed to Gentrifiers” -- addressing a big concern among inner-city neighborhoods across the country. The man who created the sign is known as Bryce Detroit. “I would describe it as a neighborhood that is steeped in history, steeped in legacy,” Bryce Detroit said. “In particular, Black art and cultural economy.”Because of his love for the neighborhood, Bryce Detroit had the gentrification road sign installed across from the Historic Apex Bar.

Local neighborhood sues USPS to switch to Ann Arbor zip code

SUPERIOR TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Property owners in the upscale Glennborough neighborhood are suing the United States Postal Service to have their zip code switched from Ypsilanti to Ann Arbor after five years of unsuccessful attempts. “We are right in the middle of 48105 zip code,” said Marx. We’re in Ann Arbor Public Schools, Ann Arbor utilities, we get food delivery and everything from Ann Arbor yet we have an Ypsilanti zip code. The 48105 zip code areas are marked in green. Beyond issues with mail, switching to an Ann Arbor zip code could help improve property values and reduce insurance rates.

12-year-old girl attacked by pit bull in Lincoln Park neighborhood

LINCOLN PARK, Mich. – When a pit bull in a Lincoln Park neighborhood was on the loose on Sept. 13, Tony Burgess' son and his friend ran into the house. Burgess then went outside to locate his 12-year-old daughter Emma. “My only instinct was to keep punching the dog until he let go,” Burgess said. I won’t let them come out. Burgess said the dog was taken by Lincoln Park Animal Control and quarantined for days.

Water main break causes flooding in Detroit neighborhood

DETROIT Residents in Detroit need help after heavy rainfall flooded their neighborhood. The flooding started at around 5 p.m. Thursday which is when they called the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department. One resident who phoned the city before calling Local 4 News wants the situation addressed fast before it reaches her apartment. The city told Local 4 News the problem wasnt reported until Friday. Residents are hoping the situation gets fixed before the flooding impacts their homes.
