Southgate man charged in connection with deadly attack on US Capitol

SOUTHGATE, Mich. – The FBI had asked for tips from people to help identify those involved in the deadly Jan. 6 siege on the U.S. Capitol Building. Anthony Williams, a man from Southgate, was identified and reported. Police said he likely deleted photos and videos from his Facebook page, but authorities were able to get copies anyway. The tipster even supplied screenshots from William’s Facebook page. The FBI said photos of Williams inside the Capitol Building were deleted and perhaps Williams thought he was in the clear, but investigators were able to retrieve the deleted photos and videos.

2 Metro Detroit men arrested in connection with deadly attack on US Capitol

MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. – Two more Michigan men were charged Thursday after photos and other evidence showed they were at the deadly Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol. The FBI said Robert “Bobby” Schornak and Daniel Herendeen -- both from Macomb County -- traveled to Washington in support of President Donald Trump and got inside the U.S. Capitol Building. A Roseville mother had a feeling when the FBI raided a home on Commonwealth Street she knew why. Her gut told her it was to go after someone involved in the deadly siege on the U.S. Capitol Building. They said a friend of Herendeen tipped them off and they found Facebook Messenger plans were made by both men.

Federal judge denies bond for Michigan man charged with assaulting police at Capitol riot

A federal judge ordered to keep Michael Foy in custody without bond while he awaits trial for eight charges connected to his alleged assault of police officers during the Jan. 6 U.S. Capitol riot. Kramer, a federal public defender representing Foy, argued in court documents. After a Monday hearing, Judge Tanya S. Chutkan denied a request to release Foy on bond. Former President Donald Trump and the Republican Party convinced Foy that the 2020 election was being stolen, his lawyer said in court documents. The eight charges are: Obstruction of an official proceeding, assaulting officers using a dangerous weapon, entering a restricted building with a deadly or dangerous weapon, entering a restricted building, disorderly conduct in a restricted building, engaging in physical violence in a restricted building and act of physical violence in a Capitol building.

Attorneys for Michael Foy argued that he was trying to save a woman from being trampled when he struck police with a hockey stick. Shelby Township man is 3rd from Michigan charged in connection with US Capitol attack

On Thursday, a Shelby Township man became the third person from Michigan to be charged in connection with the deadly attack on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6. According to court documents, the FBI received a tip that Mels was at the Capitol during the attack. AdAfter searching the man’s phone, the FBI found several photos from inside the Capitol, including a selfie of Mels. Mels was formally charged with knowingly entering a restricted building, in addition to violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds. AdThe third man, 30-year-old Michael Foy from Wixom, was also charged for his role in the Jan. 6 attack.

Michigan National Guard redeployed to Washington, D.C. after terror threat warning

The Michigan National Guard is sending 1,000 troops to Washington, D.C. to bolster security efforts at the U.S. Capitol after a terror alert warned the Jan. 6 riots could embolden additional threats. Members of the Michigan National Guard are expected to remain in Washington, D.C. into March. “It is critical that there remains due justification to send members of Michigan’s National Guard back to Washington, D.C.,” the letter said. Michigan National Guard members returned home on Jan. 24 from a week-long mobilization in support of Biden’s inauguration. Members of the National Guard were also deployed to the state Capitol in Lansing last week to guard against possible threats.

DETROIT (AP) — Prosecutors say a former Marine from suburban Detroit struck police at least 10 times with a hockey stick during the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol, as they urged a judge to keep him locked up. Michael Foy of Wixom is due in federal court in Detroit on Monday to determine if he will be released while facing charges in Washington. Foy “swung and appears to have struck officers with his hockey stick no fewer than 10 times,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Hank Moon said in a court filing Sunday. Investigators have the hockey stick. Foy is the second Michigan man to be charged in the Capitol violence.
