Ann Arbor imagines higher-density redevelopment of federal site downtown

ANN ARBOR, MI — With interest in seeing more high-density development downtown, Ann Arbor officials are imagining a redevelopment of the Federal Building site. The site also includes a large parking lot for postal vehicles and federal workers behind the building. The raised plaza in front of the Federal Building, which has steps leading up to the main entrance, has been the site of countless public protests on many issues over the years. The way the site is configured, it’s not terribly inviting to pedestrians and it’s kind of a trip hazard, said Disch, D-1st Ward. Marshal died as a result of a vehicle accident while assisting with a law enforcement operation in Louisiana. In the five months that I have been Deputy Attorney General, I have been fortunate to benefit from several conversations with you and many of your law enforcement counterparts. What I have heard time and again is that none of us will stop this rise in violent crime alone. We must work together – not only law enforcement to law enforcement – but also in partnership with the communities bearing the brunt of the violence. During the summer months alone, DEA initiated more than 840 investigations with a nexus to violent crime.

Attorney General Merrick B. Garland Delivers Remarks on the Biden Administration’s Gun Crime Prevention Strategy

As the participants in today’s roundtable have noted, the increase in violent crime in 2020 and early 2021 is deeply troubling. That is why, last month, the Justice Department launched a comprehensive violent crime reduction strategy. Now, we know that the lion’s share of violent crime reduction work is shouldered by our state, local, tribal and territorial law enforcement partners. The Justice Department’s violent crime reduction strategy, and our initiatives to stem the rising tide of illegal guns, will save lives. But, these steps alone will not solve the problem of violent crime.

First, we will ensure that we understand and measure the problem of criminal gun trafficking in a data driven way. And we will analyze our criminal cases and investigations to determine what they can show us about modern gun trafficking patterns. We expect that the lessons from this study will help agents, prosecutors and policymakers tackle modern criminal gun trafficking enterprises. We all recognize that although law enforcement plays an important role, gun violence is not a problem that law enforcement alone can solve. Mr. Chipman has come up through the ranks, spending 25 years in the trenches fighting illegal gun trafficking and criminal enterprises.
