The United States House passed the For the People Act, which could become the biggest expansion to federal voting rights since the 1960s. The For the People Act is a bill that aims to change who can participate in elections, campaign finance and ethics laws in addition to protecting and expanding voting rights. “HR-1 is extremely important because it’s about returning the power back to the American people,” U.S. House Rep. Brenda Lawrence (MI-14) said of the bill. New bill would allow Michigan bars to stay open until 4 a.m.
LANSING, Mich. – Bars in big cities like New York, Chicago and Miami can stay open until 4 a.m. and a new bill would put Michigan bars and restaurants in line with that. Michigan Rep. Ryan Berman said extending closing hours for many bars and restaurants will help restaurants make up for lost time after the pandemic. Nya Marshall, the owner of Ivy’s Kitchen and Cocktails in Detroit on Jefferson Avenue, said she has her doubts about staying open that late.
House Democrats vow to pass minimum wage hike
The version sent to the Senate won’t include a plan to raise the minimum wage. “When it comes to the minimum wage, I am going to be one of the loudest screamers about it,” Dingell said Feb. 7. “There will be a lot of discussions about minimum wage and you may see it being moved as a separate bill,” Dingell said. The last time the federal minimum wage was raised was July 24, 2009. It is currently the longest period the U.S. has gone without raising the federal minimum wage since it was instituted in 1938.

The Michigan House announced Monday morning it has approved a $483 million COVID-19 relief bill that was passed by the Senate on Friday night. According to the House, the bill includes:$64 million in small business survival relief$220 million to extend unemployment benefits$45 million in direct payments to workers who have been impacted by the virus$75 million for hospitals and healthcare workers,$22 million for increased testing$57 million for vaccine distributionThat adds up to $483 million in relief. The Senate voted 35-2 to approve Senate Bill 748. Congress is expected to pass a relief bill today that includes stimulus checks, enhanced unemployment benefits, rental and eviction relief, money for schools and small business loans. Bill Bidwill, longtime Arizona Cardinals owner, dead at 88

"It is with great sadness that we share the news that our owner, Bill Bidwill, has passed away today at the age of 88," the Cardinals said in a statement. According to the Cardinals website, Bidwill became sole owner in 1972 when he bought his brother's stake in the team. "Bill Bidwill was part of the NFL family his entire life, starting from his days as a ball boy through his time as an owner, " NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement.
