Less than a week before Michigan State football coach Mel Tucker signed a lucrative contract extension last year, Mat Ishbia and Steve St. Andre agreed to donate $24 million to the university’s athletic department. The agreements don’t specify the money be used to fund the 10-year, $95 million extension Tucker signed and don’t give the donors any control in coaching decisions. Michigan State released the agreements Thursday after a Michigan Court of Claims judge ruled that the university had to disclose. St. Andre, a Michigan State graduate and the chairman and founder of Shift Digital, agreed to donate $10 million. Both gift agreements from Ishbia and St. Andre were signed on Nov. 19, 2021, just five days before Tucker’s contract extension was finalized.

Belleville football head coach Jermain Crowell has been suspended by the school pending a Michigan High School Athletic Association investigation into his alleged involvement in possible undue influence violations. MHSAA director of communications Geoff Kimmerly confirmed to MLive via text Thursday afternoon that there was an investigation ongoing, but deferred to Belleville for details on the investigation. A message was left Thursday with Belleville athletic director Joe Brodie for comment. Crowell did not coach in Belleville’s playoff opener last week and will not coach on Friday. Crowell led Belleville to a state championship victory last season and has the Tigers on a 21-game winning streak.

A non-opioid animal tranquilizer that’s being laced into drugs to create an extended high has been linked to 171 opioid deaths in Michigan since 2019 – and that number is likely an undercount, experts say. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reports that from 2019 to 2021, 171 opioid deaths in the state were linked to xylazine. It has been in the illicit drug supply since at least 2006 when it was first seen in overdose deaths in Philadelphia, the Detroit Free Press reports. Fentanyl on the other hand creates an intense, but short-lived, high, the Free Press reports. Another difference between fentanyl and xylazine is that the former is an opioid while the latter is not, WXYZ Detroit reports.

Attorney Herschel Fink said the deals clearly fall under the state’s public records law. “The public has a right to know what promises MSU has made in exchange for these gifts, and MSU and these alumni have publicly celebrated their generosity,” Fink said. ROMEO, MI – A Michigan animal rescue and its partners are busy caring for 836 parakeets taken from the home of an animal hoarder. “These birds came from a very unhealthy situation and the irresponsibility of the owner is infuriating,” shelter officials wrote on Facebook. Adoptions were expected to begin through the various shelters Jan. 23, according to the Associated Press, but the shelters want to ensure adopting homes are a good fit for the birds. DAWG posted an information sheet to its Facebook page for prospective owners, noting that owning a parakeet is a 6-to-15-year commitment. Parakeets are vocal birds that can be noisy and messy and require food, water, daily cage cleaning, daily interaction, and flight time.

It’s called Top 10 Cares, and it’s all about connecting struggling restaurants with funds to help them feed local communities. The Top 10 Cares initiative sends donations directly to local restaurants, who then deliver healthy, locally sourced meals to community members in need. Now, the goal is shifting to feed Detroit-area community members who have been hard hit by the pandemic. Anani said the money he’s gotten to feed the community has helped him keep his doors open.
GM responds to allegations of racism
DETROIT – GM is responding to allegations of racism that were printed in a full-page advertisement in Sunday’s Detroit Free Press. The advertisement accuses GM CEO Mary Barra of consistently refusing to meet with several Black-owned media companies. Detroiter Byron Allen is asking GM to allocate at least 5% of its advertising budget to go toward Black-owned media companies. The ad claims less than 1% of GM’s marketing budget goes toward Black-owned media companies. Program pays Metro Detroit restaurants to cook meals for people in need
DETROIT – The Detroit Free Press and Metro Detroit Chevy Dealers have teamed up for a program that helps to feed health care workers and local food banks. For the last month, Detroit Free Press has raised money to pay restaurants like Folk Detroit, $20 per meal donated -- as part of their Top 10 Cares program. Aimie Rosner is the Marketing and Events Director at the Detroit Free Press. We’ve, we’ve paid ourselves -- we pay our bills. The Whitmer Administration plans to implement another liquor buyback program for restaurants and bars and partner with Michigan restaurants to allow SNAP benefits for prepared meals.
Lake Michigan drownings surge to new high in 2020
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Drownings in Lake Michigan have reached record levels with at least 53 people dead so far this year, according to a water safety advocacy group. The Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project, a nonprofit that tracks Great Lakes drownings, said that compares with 48 drownings in 2019 and 42 in 2018. Since 2010, there has been a total of 434 drownings in Lake Michigan, according to the project. Benjamin said the group collects information about fatal incidents from news articles, social media reports, and tips from family members and witnesses. He added that social media has helped the tracker to be more accurate.

Pence takes first-ever motorcade on Michigan's Mackinac Island
MACKINAC ISLAND, Mich. - Vice President Mike Pence scored a first when he took a motorcade to a speech on Michigan's picturesque Mackinac Island, drawing some criticism on social media. Pence took an eight-vehicle motorcade to the island's Grand Hotel for a speech to the Republican Leadership Conference Saturday. He flew to Michigan, took a helicopter to the small island airport and transferred to vehicles brought by boat the night before. The Detroit Free Press says it was the first ever motorcade on the island, which has prohibited vehicles since 1898 except for snowmobiles, emergency and service vehicles. When President Gerald Ford visited the island in 1975, he travelled by horse-drawn carriage.

Group warns legal pot is an unpredictable revenue source
DETROIT – While recreational marijuana sales in Michigan are expected to initially rocket, a public policy organization has warned that legal pot is an unpredictable revenue source. The Detroit Free Press reports that investors at the Capital Cannabis Conference in Detroit forecast Michigan's market could exceed $2 billion. But a Pew Charitable Trusts study released Aug. 19 says high taxes -- and a thriving black market -- could upset revenue goals, as in California.

The Detroit Free Press reports that the agency's director, Heidi Washington, recently announced to a Senate committee that the department hired a licensed mental health professional to serve as its employee wellness program manager. Washington told the senators that the agency wants to increase training to manage stress and reduce the stigma associated with asking for help.
Vice President Mike Pence to visit Grand Rapids on Monday
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Vice President Mike Pence will visit Grand Rapids on Monday to rally with Michigan Senatorial candidate John James. An EPIC-MRA/Detroit Free Press poll released Thursday showed a tightening race with Republican candidate James at 42 percent and his Democratic opponent, Sen. Debbie Stabenow, leading with 49 percent. This poll comes after another survey showed James within 7 points of Stabenow with less than two weeks to go before the election Nov. 6. "As we surge in polls against 43-year politician Sen.
