‘We saved the house,’ Friends of Theodore Roethke Foundation says of poet’s uncle’s home once slated for demolition
SAGINAW, MI — Once slated for demolition, the so-called “Stone House” on Gratiot that belonged to the uncle of Saginaw’s Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Theodore Roethke, is still standing. And Annie Ransford, president of the Friends of Theodore Roethke Foundation, says it’s not going anywhere. Since then, the Friends of Theodore Roethke Foundation secured donations and grants, welcomed new board members and moved forward with a plan to restore and bring new life to the Stone House. Roethke’s childhood home-turned-museum stands at 1805 Gratiot, and his uncle Carl Roethke’s Stone House is next door at 1759 Gratiot. Going forward, the Friends of Theodore Roethke Foundation aims to operate the poet’s house as a museum and the Stone House as a community center that will host special events, poets in residence and more.mlive.com
