Tigers’ Casey Mize will ‘dial back’ after not feeling 100 percent in rehab start
DETROIT -- Don’t call it a setback, but Casey Mize is headed back to Lakeland, Fla, after an ill-fated rehab start. The Detroit Tigers right-hander, on the injured list since April 15 with an elbow sprain, made one brief rehab appearance for the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens on Thursday, lasting only 2/3 of an inning. Hinch said the Tigers were going to “dial back” Mize’s rehab and return him to team’s facility in Lakeland. Manning made his second rehab start for the Mud Hens on Friday. That would put him in line to start May 23 or 24 in Minnesota at the end of the Tigers’ upcoming road trip.mlive.com

Manning (shoulder) followed him to the IL a few days later when he left his start after just two innings. Manning initially hoped he wouldn’t miss a start. Hinch said Manning had not suffered a setback, but by sending him to Lakeland the Tigers were acknowledging that the absence would be more than merely a start or two. Hinch said Lakeland is best setting for the two pitchers where they can have the complete attention of the training staff.mlive.com

New Tiger Austin Meadows’ whirlwind week will end in Detroit: ‘I need cold-weather gear’

What does Tigers’ outfield look like after injuries to Riley Greene, Derek Hill?
LAKELAND, Fla. -- The crushing news that Detroit Tigers rookie outfielder Riley Greene would miss the start of the season after breaking his foot could have created a huge opportunity for fellow center fielder Derek Hill. Hinch announced Saturday that Hill would not be ready for the start of the season after suffering a low-grade hamstring strain. Hill, 26, was the Tigers’ first-round pick in 2014 and is known for his speed and outfield defense. Now it appears the Tigers will head north with only three true outfielders: Reyes, Akil Baddoo and Robbie Grossman. Six pitchers left for five spots: Jason Foley, Rony Garcia, Will Vest, Drew Hutchison, Jacob Barnes, Chase Anderson.mlive.com

Tigers bring back veteran reliever cut just 4 days ago

Tigers’ final Opening Day roster projection -- and a bonus prediction of their roster on May 2
There are practical reasons why that probably won’t be announced until the end of camp, but their spots on the Opening Day roster appear quite safe. The only real roster drama is down to the nitty-gritty: The final pitchers and the final bench player. The Opening Day roster is always a temporary snapshot of one moment in time, but that will be especially true in 2022. With that in mind, we’re offering two final roster projections -- one for Opening Day on April 8 and one for May 2. Dustin Garneau, CNotesMost of the camp battles have already been decided, but the final roster spot may come down to Reyes or Derek Hill.mlive.com
Tigers want to get better at turning 2: ‘We bluntly told our players exactly where we stood’
There have been encouraging signs in the shortened spring training, including a crisp 5-4-3 double play started by Candelario on Monday’s game in Lakeland. “Candy’s picked up his pace at third, which has been an emphasis this spring,” Hinch said. “Jonathan’s a little bit of a difference-maker turning the double play. Although shortstop and later second baseman Willi Castro took much of the blame, the rotating cast of infielders playing the middle positions didn’t help. “We’ve bluntly told our players exactly where we stood and where we want to be,” Hinch said.mlive.com
Will Riley Greene, Spencer Torkelson take detour to Toledo? New rules impact Tigers prospects
LAKELAND, Fla. -- Rookies Riley Greene and Spencer Torkelson may go north with the big-league club in a few days, but Detroit Tigers manager A.J. And others suspected something more sinister: The Tigers are laying the groundwork to delay the arrival of one or both prospects for financial reasons. It wouldn’t be the first time a Major League team has done so, and the Tigers have real incentives to consider it. Are those incentives enough to sway teams who would otherwise be tempted to delay the arrival of their top prospects? But for a team like the Tigers who plan to contend again in 2022 after years in the wilderness, the impact of Greene and Torkelson is vitally important.mlive.com
Tigers cut veteran reliever as bullpen continues to take shape

Vest, 26, had spent three years in the Tigers’ system when he was selected by the Mariners before the 2021 season. Vest made the club out of spring training and got off to a hot start in the regular season. Vest is among a handful of non-roster invitees who could compete for one, two or three open spots in the Tigers’ bullpen this spring. Tigers roster projection 2.0: Now with more players, new decisions
There have been a few changes since the last projection:* Detroit Tigers manager A.J. Both of those bullet points are good news for pitchers seeking a spot on the Tigers’ roster. Detroit Tigers' Derek Hill runs to third on his triple during an intrasquad baseball game, Thursday, July 16, 2020, in Detroit. The extra roster spot also allows the Tigers to carry three catchers without feeling too guilty about it. The Tigers probably don’t want to dramatically shake up the roster early in the season for what will be a temporary roster spot, so anyone on the 40-man roster has an advantage.mlive.com

Tigers owner disputes report that he opposed deal with players
LAKELAND, Fla. -- Detroit Tigers owner Christopher Ilitch pushed back Wednesday on a three-week-old report that painted him as one of the Major League owners obstructing a settlement with players. The report in The Athletic identified Ilitch as one of four owners who opposed the league’s then-final offer to players because it increased the competitive balance tax threshold (sometimes called a luxury tax). Ilitch and all 29 other MLB owners voted to ratify that deal. But Ilitch remained irked by the report and addressed it forcefully in his annual spring meeting with reporters. “I talk a lot to our staff on the business operation side who talk to our fans quite often.mlive.com
Tigers reach deals with 7 players, but could face Spencer Turnbull in arbitration battle
LAKELAND, Fla. -- The Detroit Tigers reached deals with seven arbitration-eligible players but appear ready to “go to trial” with injured starting pitcher Spencer Turnbull. Players eligible for arbitration have spent between three and six years on an MLB active roster. In most cases, players and clubs reach a deal on their own without having to resort to arbitration. The Tigers and Turnbull are allowed to continue negotiating up until the arbitration hearing, but the Tigers and many MLB clubs are known for a “file and trial” policy. His 2023 salary will be similar or identical to his 2022 salary, meaning a victory in arbitration could ultimately be worth $1.55 million.mlive.com

There’s been talk of reviving the “ghost runner” on second base in extra innings this year, and a decision is expected soon. “Actually, it’s a real runner,” Tigers manager A.J. Tigers’ Opening Day roster projection: Who will make the cut?
LAKELAND, Fla. -- There are only 16 days left in spring training and we’re finally unveiling our first Detroit Tigers’ Opening Day roster projection. The Tigers weren’t done building the roster, so projecting it was nearly impossible. In fact, it’s possible that three or four players signed within the last 10 days could be among the players who come north for Opening Day on April 8 at Comerica Park. We also don’t know whether newly signed pitchers Michael Pineda and Wily Peralta will get their visas approved in time to be ready for Opening Day. I reserve the right to change my mind, but for now I’m putting both Greene and Torkelson on the Opening Day roster and the everyday lineup.mlive.com
‘Big Mike’ arrives in Tiger Town, hoping his long winter wait won’t last much longer
When Big Mike arrived at the Detroit Tigers spring training clubhouse for the first time on Sunday morning, it was impossible to miss him. Accurate weights and measures are sometimes difficult to come by, but it’s not a stretch to peg Pineda at about 6-foot-8 and 300 pounds. Pineda, a veteran right-handed starter, signed a one-year deal with the Tigers this week that could be worth more than $7 million incentives. “We were waiting, waiting, waiting and thank God everything in the process is done.”Or almost done, anyway. After Carlos Correa’s signing, the AL Central just got really interesting
If Correa has a decent season in 2022 he will almost certainly test the market again next winter. The deal puts the Twins’ entire offseason -- and the American League Central division race -- in a whole new light. Correa rejected the deal, which was understandable, as Corey Seager had just fetched 10 years and $325 million from the Texas Rangers. But the post-lockout market never materialized as Correa hoped, and he was forced to settle for a short-term deal. The Chicago White Sox will be the consensus pick to win the Central, but the Twins may have signed their way into the No.mlive.com
Tigers sign Michael Pineda to bolster starting rotation: reports
LAKELAND, Fla. -- A week into spring training, the Detroit Tigers have reportedly wrapped up their starting rotation. The Tigers signed veteran right-hander Michael Pineda to a one-year contract worth $5.5 million, plus $2.5 million in incentives, according to MLB Network’s Jon Heyman. Pineda’s age likely prevented him from getting another two-year deal this time around, but he has been a consistently effective starter when healthy. Tyler Alexander, the presumed fifth starter prior to Pineda’s signing, will likely get pushed to the bullpen. The Tigers made an early splash on the free-agent market by signing left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez to a five-year, $77 million deal.mlive.com

Tigers set starters for first 5 spring games: Will Tyler Alexander stick at No. 5?
LAKELAND, Fla. -- The early portion of this unorthodox spring training is in the books, and Tyler Alexander is still the Detroit Tigers’ fifth starter. Hinch arranged the starting pitchers for the first five Grapefruit League games of the season. Alexander’s spot is the most vulnerable simply because of his track record as a reliever and the Tigers’ ongoing pursuit of another starting pitcher. Although time is running short, it remains possible that the Tigers will sign or trade for another starter for the spot, pushing Alexander to the bullpen. “But we like Tyler and the role that he’s played for us, as he’s been very successful at it.mlive.com
Tigers GM says there will no service-time tricks with Torkelson, Greene

Instead of starting the season against the Mariners, the Tigers will now finish the season at T-Mobile Park. Predicting all 26 players who will make the Detroit Tigers’ Opening Day roster
C Wilson RamosConfidence: LockRole: Starting catcherThere’s a legitimate three-way battle to back up Ramos, but everyone knows who the starter will be. AdSS Willi CastroConfidence: LockRole: Starting shortstopThere are going to be some defensive miscues, especially on the throw. As a result, the Tigers will have an extra roster spot to play with -- that’s why there will be 27 names on this list. He bet on himself and won, allowing just three runs while striking out 15 batters in 11 spring innings. If we’re being honest, a conversation about Baddoo as a starter feels more justified than a conversation about earning a roster spot.

Detroit Tigers prospect Beau Burrows returns from injury with strong outing

Burrows has been sidelined since an April 27 start for the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens. The 2015 first-round pick generated just four swinging strikes, continuing his trend of struggling to miss bats. He had fewer than 10 swinging strikes in four of his five starts before hitting the injured list. Burrows is only 22 years old, but the Tigers certainly could have used him early this season.
