arabamericannews.comHouse OK’s pension tax repeal, major 30% EITC boost amid intense GOP uproar
The move, as detailed within House Bill 4001, would also send $180 rebate checks to each of Michigan’s single filer taxpayers; joint filers would get $180 cumulatively. The two chambers had long settled on raising the EITC from 6% to 30% and making the move retroactive to the 2022 tax year. The Michigan Department of Treasury estimates it would cost approximately $925,000 to retroactively distribute EITC refunds for the 2022 tax year. That fund would be used to issue a rebate of $180 to each eligible taxpayer for the 2022 tax year. Without, the checks could not be sent prior to that April deadline and it would seem imminent the automatic income tax rollback would be triggered for all Michiganders.

The Michigan legislature is ramping up to get back to work, with the first committees of the year scheduled to start Tuesday, Jan. 24. Both Democrats and Republicans have somewhat similar plans to roll back a tax on income for retirement pensions, along with a way to raise a tax credit for low- to-moderate income families. Michigan’s current income tax rate sits at 4.25%, though could be decreased to 4.05% this year because of the trigger. However state treasury officials are estimating Michigan will see a $9.2 billion surplus at the end of this fiscal year, increasing the likelihood that all that cash could trigger a cut in the state income tax.
