Rare Eurasian bird spotted in Michigan, first sighting in US

SOUTH ROCKWOOD, MICH. -- A Michigan birdwatcher made a once-in-a-lifetime discovery this weekend when he spotted a bird known as a common redshank in a marsh near Detroit, a few thousand miles from the birdโ€™s usual home. Birding record keepers have confirmed the sighting as the first time the Eurasian shorebird has ever been seen in the United States. A quick Google search and a few texts to birding colleagues confirmed that Labadie could officially report the rarest sighting heโ€™d ever made. โ€œIn the birding world, it doesnโ€™t get any bigger than this.โ€A Eurasian shorebird known as a common redshank was discovered in a Detroit-area marsh on July 4, 2022. But an intercontinental vagrant like Labadieโ€™s common redshank is exceedingly rare, and the kind of discovery that may never be made again.

Woman pleads guilty to trying to hire fake โ€˜hitmanโ€™ to kill ex-husband

MONROE COUNTY, MI โ€“ A Rockwood woman has pled guilty to attempting to hire a hitman through a fake website to kill her ex-husband. Wendy Lynn Wein, 52, pled guilty to charges of solicitation of murder and using a computer to commit a crime on Nov. 12, according to Monroe County Prosecuting Attorneyโ€™s Office. The terms of Weinโ€™s plea agreement include a cap of 108 months in prison on the minimum sentence, officials said. During the meeting, Wein offered the undercover officer $5,000 to kill her ex-husband and provided him with an upfront payment to cover travel expenses out of state, police said. Soon after handing over the payment, Wein was arrested and taken to the Monroe County Jail.

Berlin, Frenchtown put out woods fire

Firefighters from Berlin and Frenchtown townships battled a fire in a woods behind the former Ritter Pottery Co. property in the Village of South Rockwood Tuesday afternoon before extinguishing it with multiple fire trucks. Berlin firefighters arrived first after being dispatched at 3:52 p.m. Tuesday to the woods located off S. Huron River Dr. east of Dixie Hwy. Berlin brought three fire engines, a ladder truck and both of its brush trucks used to fight grass fires, Chief Bob Cousino said. You couldnโ€™t get more than one brush truck through at one time.โ€There were trees, phragmites, grass and brush all burning. โ€œThis was our first field fire, but other departments in the county have been busy this week with structure fires and field fires,โ€ Cousino said.

South Fox Island is in Lake Michigan about 22 miles offshore; north of the Manitou islands and south of Beaver Island. Two years ago, Schenavar and White did their first assignment as volunteer lighthouse keepers at Ludington Breakwater; and last year did one at Old Mission Point Lighthouse. The Fox Island Lighthouse Association explained that the State of Michigan bought the property in 1970 with intention to provide recreation and access to the public. The association formed in 2004 and began volunteer restoration and maintenance work at South Fox Island Light Station in 2006. Catherine Allchin, vice president of the Fox Island Lighthouse Association, led the tasks.

Monroe County woman arrested for attempting to hire hitman to kill ex-husband

MONROE COUNTY, Mich. Michigan State Police (MSP) arrested a 51-year-old woman on Friday after she attempted to hire a hitman to kill her ex-husband, officials said. Wendy Wein of South Rockwood allegedly contacted a fictitious website called www.rentahitman.com and filled out a form to request help taking care of an issue, which she identified as her ex-husband, police said. The websites owner contacted MSP and alerted them that Wein may be trying to kill her ex-husband. The Monroe County woman has also been charged with illegal use of a computer to facilitate a crime. Police say the hitman website that Wein used poses as a platform that offers hitmen to solve problems, but the owner actually then refers the requests to law enforcement.
