Willow Run Airport awarded more than $15 million in federal funding for upgrades
Senators Debbie Stabenow (MI), Gary Peters (MI) announced on Tuesday that Willow Run Airport will receive $15,275,685 from the Department of Transportation. The airport will use the Federal Aviation Administration grant to improve its existing runways. “I’m pleased to announce this federal grant, which will help improve Willow Run’s daily operations.”“Investing in Willow Run Airport will support economic development in the region,” Senator Stabenow said in a release. “Willow Run Airport is a critical gateway for our local economy in Ypsilanti and Washtenaw, as well as throughout the entire tri-county area,” Congresswoman Dingell said in a release. “With more than $15 million in federal funds, Willow Run can make critical improvements to their runway that will keep pilots and passengers safe, while increasing cargo capability arriving at and departing from the airport.
Plane makes emergency landing at Willow Run airport due to mechanical issues
VAN BUREN TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A small airplane made an emergency landing early Sunday morning at Willow Run Airport. According to authorities, the small aircraft was experiencing mechanical issues and its landing gear did not come down, causing the plane to leave the runway just after midnight. Authorities said the two people onboard were able to exit safely and were unharmed. The investigation into what went wrong is ongoing.
2 people charged in Spirit Airlines bag dispute at Detroit Metro Airport

Jameel Murphy and Raymonique Williams, both of Detroit, pleaded not guilty to aggravated assault, assault and battery, and disturbing the peace. Loaded gun found in carry-on bag of man at Grand Rapids based airport
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – On Sunday, a Transportation Security Administration officer found a loaded gun in a man’s carry-on bag at the Grand Rapids based Gerald R. Ford International Airport. TSA officials say the gun was found in the carry-on bag at around 5:30 a.m. on Sunday. “Firearms and prohibited items continue to be detected at airport security checkpoints during this pandemic,” said Grand Rapid’s TSA Federal Security Director Roger Dubuc. The gun was found ahead of President Donald Trump’s visit to Gerald R. Ford International Airport tonight. The president will be in Traverse City before holding a 10:30 p.m. rally at the Grand Rapids based airport.
6-year-old killed, parents hurt in 4-car crash caused by reckless driver, Waterford Twp. police say
WATERFORD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A 6-year-old girl was killed and her parents were injured in a four-car crash caused by an apparent drunken driver who had been reported for driving recklessly, according to Waterford Township police. The crash happened around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Highland and Airport roads in Waterford Township. The scene of an Oct. 14, 2020, crash at Highland and Airport roads in Waterford Township. The Waterford Township man driving the Equinox and his 6-year-old daughter were transported to a nearby hospital, authorities said. Detroit woman arrested after creating scene at Florida airport terminal
DETROIT – A 48-year-old Detroit woman was arrested Saturday, Sept. 5 after causing a scene at a Florida airport. Authorities took Francita Anitha Ward into custody for creating a disturbance inside Terminal 4 at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. She caused the disturbance after arriving late for Spirit Flight 2101 to Detroit. Police say Ward was loud and not wearing a mask while using profanity inside the terminal in front of families and children. As she was asked to leave Terminal 4 she yelled several times, “take me to jail.”
American Airlines plans 19,000 furloughs, layoffs in October
DALLAS American Airlines said Tuesday it will eliminate 19,000 jobs in October as it struggles with a sharp downturn in travel because of the pandemic. The furloughs and management layoffs announced Tuesday are in addition to 23,500 employees who accepted buyouts, retired early or took long-term leaves of absence. U.S. air travel plunged 95% by April, a few weeks after the first significant coronavirus outbreaks in the United States. In March, passenger airlines got $25 billion from the government to save jobs for six months, and American was the biggest beneficiary, receiving $5.8 billion. American plans to fly less than half its usual schedule and only one-fourth of its lucrative international service in the fourth quarter.
