mlive.comFuture of minimum wage uncertain, Dems seek federal probe into GOP lawmakers: The week in Michigan politics
The future of Michigan’s minimum wage and the availability of sick leave for workers remains unclear after a Court of Claims ruling on Tuesday tossed out 2018 legislation that weakened the original policies. Related: Did Michigan’s minimum wage just rise to $12-an-hour because of a court ruling? The Michigan legislature had adopted activist-submitted proposals in 2018 to raise the minimum wage and require earned paid sick leave, only to water down those measures with new legislation months later. State attorneys want to prevent a sudden increase in the minimum wage and paid sick leave because Michiganders “deserve predictability and stability” in the laws’ status, they wrote in an appeals court filing. Michigan court rules dictate that a ruling should not be enforced until 21 days after, which in this case would be Aug. 9.
