mlive.comValium, antidepressants: Florida fish are on drugs, study shows
The fish in South Florida are on drugs, and while that might bring an initial chuckle, it’s really not a laughing matter at all. Because, according to reports, a new study out of the Sunshine State found “dozens of pharmaceuticals” in the blood and tissue of the fish in the South Florida waters. Ninety-three bonefish in South Florida were test, according to the report, and all 93 were found to have drugs in their system. The report said that the average number of drugs found in each fish was seven, and that some of the bonefish even had as many as 16 different drugs in them. The fish are reportedly ingesting the drugs through human waste, and Castillo said that the presence of the substances can change a fish’s behavior and reproduction patterns.

Michigan DNR: Fish kills may be common during spring thaw
If you discover dead fish or other aquatic animals as the ice and snow thaws out this spring, just know -- it’s totally normal, according to the Michigan DNR. “Winterkill is the most common type of fish kill,” said Gary Whelan, DNR Fisheries Division research manager. That’s because the dead fish and other aquatic life are temporarily preserved by the cold water. “Dead fish and other aquatic life may appear fuzzy because of secondary infection by fungus, but the fungus was not the cause of death. The fish actually suffocated from a lack of dissolved oxygen from decaying plants and other dead aquatic animals under the ice.”Dissolved oxygen is required by fish and all other forms of aquatic life.
3 Fish recipes you can make in 30 minutes or less
Here are 3 different recipes that I cook up frequently at home, and while I am using fresh to frozen mahi-mahi, any mild white fish will work for these recipes. I have used fresh lake superior white fish to make this and it was phenomenal. Tear a piece of heavy-duty aluminum foil large enough to wrap each fish and veggies pack. Place on a baking sheet pan and bake fish until cooked through, depending on the type and the thickness of your fish, around 15 minutes. Lightly sprinkle the spices on the fish to taste, be careful not to overload them, this isn’t like the blackened fish, you should still see the white fish popping through.

mlive.comDelta County fish kill blamed on black liquor from paper mill
Asmus said when the pipe failed a black liquor was released to the wastewater treatment plant. Black liquor is a high-strength organic pollutant derived from the breakdown of pulpwood. The wastewater system remained functional however, it was not capable of treating the black liquor entirely. Black liquor is a byproduct of a process at the mill, not a chemical purchased and stored on site for a specific purpose, Asmus said.
Officials: ‘Do Not Eat’ fish, PFAS advisory for Huron River, connected waterbodies in effect
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Michigan health officials are reminding residents to continue following “Do Not Eat” and “Avoid Foam” advisories for the Huron River and connected waterbodies. MDHHS said everyone should avoid eating fish from the Huron River and several connected waterbodies, and avoid foam on Michigan lakes and rivers known to have per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the water. Fish advisoryThe “Do not Eat” fish advisory is based on perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) fish data from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE). In August 2018, MDHHS issued a ‘Do Not Eat’ advisory for fish from the Huron River where North Wixom Road crosses into Oakland County to the mouth of the Huron River as it enters Lake Erie in Wayne County. While the state does not have data from Huron River foam, the advisory was issued as a precaution given the available Huron River surface water and fish data.

REPORT: Fish Are In Trouble With The Climate Crisis
Warmer watersOcean warming this century has contributed to an overall decrease in maximum catch potential. Overfishing makes the issue worse, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report said. Warmer waters hold less oxygen, and fish need that oxygen to survive. There was a severe oyster seed shortage from 2007 to 2009 in the US, she testified, largely due to ocean acidification. Seafood many people love like Atlantic cod and certain salmon are challenged, and the continued climate crisis will not do these fish any favors. Fish are responding faster to climate change than many species on land, they are more vulnerable, Pinsky said.
