Former Downtown skatepark moving to larger location on Detroitโs west side
DETROIT โ With a grand opening featuring the most popular skateboarder in the world, Tony Hawk, Wayfinding Park was once a great skatepark located in the heart of Downtown Detroit. โThe Wayfinding park was a temporary park downtown near Campus Martius that we built a few years ago. And it was a very small park but it served the community well for a couple of years,โ said Modern Skateshop and Skatepark owner, George Leichtweis. The ramps have all been stored at the skatepark. Leichtweis is one of several people behind placing the once used ramps in an underprivileged part of town.
Veterans Memorial Park Indoor Ice Arena reopens for lessons, hockey
The Veterans Memorial Park Indoor Ice Arena is reopening for limited skating lessons and adult recreational hockey for the 2020-21 season. The ice arena will offer lessons at four levels: Snow Plow Sam, Basic Skills, Freestyle and Adult Instructional. Team play is governed by USA Hockey/MAHA regulations, costs $5,000 per team and players must have USA Hockey insurance. Learn more about recreational hockey registration here. Ann Arbor ice arena, skating teams fight for reclassification
ANN ARBOR, Mich. Ice arenas and rinks need to be reclassified, say Ann Arbor athletes and Diane Wilson, the general manager of Ann Arbor Ice Cube. To get the Cube and other ice rinks reclassified, Wilson has reached out to Gov. The Ann Arbor Ice Cube, which has three different rinks, is used by different ice skating and hockey teams, including the U.S. National Team, Eastern Michigan University hockey team and four local high school teams. She added that Ann Arbor is the birthplace of synchronized skating and its teams are nationally ranked. Wilson said that even before the pandemic, the Ann Arbor Ice Cube was never at capacity because of its size and that several skaters could be on the ice without problems.
Ann Arbor playgrounds, skatepark to open on Monday
ANN ARBOR, Mich. The city of Ann Arbor Parks and Recreation department has announced that it will reopen public playgrounds around the city and the Ann Arbor Skatepark on Monday, June 8. The announcement was made after Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer rescinded Michigans stay-home order on June 1. According to the announcement, structures and equipment at the playgrounds and skatepark are not cleaned or sanitized so residents are encouraged to use increased safety measures like social distancing.
