Hundreds of parents, teachers and kindergarteners cheered on the senior class in their caps and gowns on Thursday, May 19, as they marched in parade-like fashion along East Clark Street and through the halls of Thomson Elementary School. This school is super competitive, especially since we’re a school of choice. There’s just so many people in our graduating class,” Allen said. “You look at all those little kids with their little smiles looking up at you, and you just feel like a hero to every one of them. DAVISON, MI -- Davison Community Schools is desperately seeking bus drivers. Davison’s transportation department has a fleet of 47 buses that cover a 57-square-mile radius each school day, according to its website. Drivers complete a pre-trip check each day and coordinate the Bus Safety Committee, which reminds students of bus safety protocols. Davison is facing the same problem that plagued schools across the state and the country during the peaks of COVID-19. Clio Area Schools issued a warning to parents to find alternative ways to get to school in earlier this school year after facing an “unprecedented” bus driver shortage.

DAVISON, MI -- The Michigan Department of Transportation will host a public open house next week to discuss intersection improvements on M-15, otherwise known as North State Road, through the heart of Davison. The open house will take place from 3-6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 6, at Davison City Hall, located at 200 E. Flint St. The department is investing $2.9 million to widen M-15 and Clark Street to accommodate a center left-turn lane. Nearly a half-mile of M-15 from Lexington Street to South Street will be resurfaced in the project. MDOT staff and contractors, local businesses and community stakeholders will all be at the open house to discuss intersection improvements.

Davison brought 13 wrestlers to Ford Field on Friday and seven of them made it through the opening, quarterfinal and semifinal rounds of the state finals tournament. DAVISON, MI -- The campaign to recall Genesee County GOP chair Matthew Smith from his position on the Davison Board of Education has failed to gather enough signatures to trigger a special election, missing the goal by only 96 signatures. The recall, which has hovered over Genesee County politics and started shouting matches at school board meetings for weeks, collected 3,593 validated signatures, but needed 3,689 signatures for a special election. When the signatures were first turned over to the Genesee County Clerk’s Office, more than 4,000 signatures were contained on petition sheets. Smith was censured by the Davison school board in December for lying about his misdemeanor charge, which he pleaded guilty to the month before. This was the original reasoning to recall Smith, Phillips said.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for the region, including Genesee County, which notes two to four inches of snow is possible by 7 p.m. Monday. Localized totals near 5 inches are possible.”In addition to Davison, other Genesee County schools are closed or learning virtual today due to weather conditions. Flint Community Schools and Beecher Community Schools are also doing virtual learning, but they both announced their closures last week due to COVID-19. Grand Blanc Community Schools doesn’t have school today either, as they are finishing a virtual learning period from last week from COVID-19.

DAVISON, MI -- A large fire destroyed a business and shut down a busy thoroughfare Wednesday night in Davison. Davison-Richfield Area Fire Chief Brian Flewelling said firefighters were on scene within three to four minutes at the building, which houses Graff Detailing and Graff Financial. Multiple departments including Forest Township, Elba Township, Lapeer, Burton and Grand Blanc were called to out to the scene for mutual aid. Bob Davis lives nearby on Irish Road and headed toward the building after he heard about the fire. Renovations had recently taken place inside the business, Davis said, including the installation of new carpet.

The committee working to recall Matthew Smith from the Davison Board of Education learned of the possible fraudulent signature when Rhinebolt’s wife, Morgan Jackson, had posted about the fake signature on social media. The committee working to recall Matthew Smith from the Davison Board of Education said the board member and Genesee County Republican Party chair has poisoned the democratic process. It is illegal under Michigan law to sign a recall petition with a name other than his or her own. Those that do are guilty of a misdemeanor, according to a warning on the recall petition.

Frankenmuth 60, Swartz Creek 43Quandre Wright scored a game-high 18 points for Swartz Creek’s boys, who took a 15-9 lead after the first quarter before Frankenmuth outscored the Dragons 38-16 in the middle two periods. Floyd Atwood led Frankenmuth (4-0) with 14 points. Swartz Creek fell to 0-5.

In a tense public meeting, the Davison Board of Education voted Tuesday, Dec. 14 to censure Smith, disallowing him to run for board president and removing him from committee assignments. Davison visited Arthur Hill Tuesday, marking the return of former Arthur Hill head coach Greg McMath, former assistant coach Greg Lawson and former Saginaw junior high phenom Greg Lawson II. But it also marked the return of the Arthur Hill boys basketball team, which played its first home game since Covid forced it to forfeit a playoff game and end the 2020-21 season. Arthur Hill enjoyed the return more than Davison’s Saginaw players and coaches, jumping out to an early lead and hanging on for an 83-68 Saginaw Valley League win. He followed with 15 points in the fourth quarter – including three 3-pointers – as Davison cut the Arthur Hill lead to single digits. “My guys played a great first half, but I think they took the foot off the gas in the second half,” Arthur Hill coach Anthony Davis said.

DAVISON, MI -- Davison students from grades K-8 got to go shopping with a “hero” of their choice Thursday night in a partnership the school district has with local police and fire agencies. Students and public servants gathered at First Baptist Church of Davison to collect their allowances, pick a partner to shop with and head to stores throughout downtown Davison to buy Christmas gifts for themselves and their families on Dec. 9 as part of the ”Shop with a Hero” event. Davison police, Davison Township police Davison-Richfield Fire and Richfield Township police all took part in the evening’s festivities. A total of $3,000 was allotted to students to spend on Christmas gifts. The “Shop with a Hero” event is a yearly partnership between the school district and its neighboring authorities.

DAVISON, MI -- Three Davison Commmunity Schools buildings are being dismissed today after a power outage caused by a tree that fell on a power line in Abernathy Regional Park behind the middle school. Davison High School, Davison Middle School and Hahn Intermediate students are all being dismissed early due to the power outage. Middle school and Hahn students will be dismissed at 1:30 p.m. High school and alternative education students will be dismissed at 1:45 p.m., according to a news release from the district. Parents picking up children are advised to use Lexington Drive to enter the staff parking lot on the south side of the middle school to avoid the downed power line. Hahn students can be picked up at the staff parking lot at Dayton and Clark Streets.

Shots fired during pursuit on Detroit’s west side after police witness hit-and-run
DETROIT – It’s been a dangerous week for Detroit Police officers. Saturday was the fourth time in seven days that suspects had fired shots at officers. “It’s a very dangerous, dangerous time for police officers across this country and particularly here in the city of Detroit,” said Detroit Police Commander Darin Szilagy. “At that point, everybody inside of the vehicle opened all the doors and begin running away from the officers,” Patterson said. “The male then leaned out of the vehicle and fired shots, or led to fire shots at the officers.”He said the gunman tried to runaway and pointed his weapon at the police, who fired back but didn’t strike him.

23-year-old woman killed in rollover crash on I-96 near Davison
DETROIT – A 23-year-old woman was killed when her car crashed and overturned Thursday morning on eastbound I-96 near the Davison in Detroit. Michigan State Police said the woman was driving a 2007 Hyundai Elantra about 2 a.m. when she lost control of the vehicle and crossed from the express lanes into the local lanes. The Elantra rolled over. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. More: Traffic news
Pickup truck driver ejected, killed in rollover crash on I-96 near Davison in Detroit
DETROIT – A pickup truck driver was ejected from a vehicle and killed Monday morning in a crash on westbound I-96 in Detroit. Westbound I-96 was closed for several hours at Davison but has reopened to traffic. An investigation revealed the driver of a pickup truck tried to make an abrupt exit from the westbound I-96 local lanes. However, his pickup side-swiped another vehicle and rolled several times, police said. Both the pickup driver and a passenger were rushed to Sinai-Grace Hospital.

Shooting reported on Lodge Freeway near Davison in Detroit
DETROIT – No one was injured following a reported shooting Tuesday night on the Lodge Freeway near Davison in Detroit. Michigan State Police troopers responded to the shooting at about 9:45 p.m. and said the incident occurred after a confrontation between drivers. An on-scene investigation indicated that the suspect drove next to the victim, resulting in the altercation. The victim then reportedly saw a handgun and heard a “pop” sound. Police said at least one round struck the victim’s vehicle.

Man beaten to death after crash at Livernois, Davison in Detroit
DETROIT - Detroit police are investigating a deadly assault that happened after a crash on the city's west side Monday morning. According to police, a 24-year-old man, who was driving a 2011 Buick Regal, was involved in a crash with another car at the intersection of Livernois and Davison just before 2 a.m. The driver of the other car, a 2007 Chevrolet Impala, got out of his car and severely beat the man.
