YPSILANTI, MI - Eastern Michigan University organization is collaborating with the Ann Arbor Police Department and other agencies on a grant-funded community policing initiative to take a look at racial inequities in public safety. EMU’s Southeast Michigan Criminal Justice Policy Research Project, also known as SMART, seeks to train local agencies to “promote transformation in public safety,” according to an EMU release. Grants for the program come from the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan’s (CFSEM) Community Policing Innovations Fund. SMART will assess EMU’s Public Safety Oversight Committee for a year before developing short and long-term changes, according to the EMU SMART page. “We’re excited about the opportunity to work with the CFSEM’s Community Policing Innovations Fund, in large part because it offers a model of community-led transformation,” Karpiak said.

(CBS Detroit) — In partnership with Via, SMART announced an on-demand public transit service called SMART Flex, which will complement and extend the existing transit system in Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties. “The new SMART Flex service in Dearborn, Troy and the Hall Road corridor is a flexible, technology-based, vital transit service that helps people to easily move around to get to the places they need to go.”Anyone within the zones will be able to hail a vehicle using the SMART Flex mobile app or by calling the call center at (734) 212-8429. “The launch of SMART Flex is a pivotal moment for transit in the Metro Detroit area,” said Daniel Ramot, Via CEO and co-founder. Free Rides to Vaccination Centers To Eliminate Transportation BarrierSMART also launched free rides to-and-from vaccination centers in Metro Detroit, which started on March 10. Using Via’s flexible transport system, SMART adjusted their service area to include vaccination sites and continue to as more sites open up across the region.

It’s why the Macomb County Health Department partnered with SMART to help distribute the coronavirus vaccine. Interested seniors should call the SMART Macomb Vaccine Hotline at 586-421-6579 to register for the county wait list. Seniors or someone they know can avoid the call altogether by emailing the SMART Macomb Vaccine Hotline 24/7 at macombvaccine@smartbus.org, and including their name, address, phone number and date of birth. SMART will maintain a wait list, and the county will contact individuals from the list as appointments at Richmond/Lenox EMS or other community sites become available. Richmond/Lenox is being overwhelmed by calls and is not able to make appointments or add names to the wait list.

SMART service continues to operate despite DDOT driver work stoppage

DETROIT – SMART is continuing to operate its scheduled service, including SMART FAST Gratiot, Woodward and Michigan going into downtown Detroit. During the service suspension with the Detroit Department of Transportation, additional buses will be placed along key SMART routes to ensure adequate service is available for riders. To ensure everyone is working together on these protocols, SMART introduced its SMART COVID-19 Safety Playbook outlining all the steps and procedures at all of its facilities, and for employees and riders. DETROIT – A teen was shot and injured while playing basketball on Detroit’s west side Friday evening, police say. According to police, the shooting happened around 8:30 p.m. Friday near Smart and McDonald. The teen was playing basketball with friends when a man walked up to the group and opened fire. Police say the victim was taken to the hospital and is currently in temporary serious condition. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 1-800-Speak-Up.

Woman gets stitches after being punched several times on SMART bus by Detroit man

ROYAL OAK, Mich. A woman was injured and forced to get stitches after being punched several times on a SMART bus by a 28-year-old Detroit man, Royal Oak police say. The assault happened May 20 in the area of Woodward and Eleven Mile on the SMART bus. According to the bus driver, the man punched the woman several times while they were on the bus. The officers spoke to several witnesses on the bus and quickly found the man in the area. Police say the victim received a laceration to the face, and was taken to a hospital where she received stitches.
