The breakthrough game 99 days into the owner-imposed lockout of players after the sides failed to reach a new collective bargaining agreement. They just needed to shake off the rust in the summer version, so it didn’t have to be as long as a traditional spring training. The deadline for ensuring an on-time spring training is approaching much sooner, maybe even by the start of next week. Can the league and union reach a deal in time to pull it off?

Predicting all 26 players who will make the Detroit Tigers’ Opening Day roster

C Wilson RamosConfidence: LockRole: Starting catcherThere’s a legitimate three-way battle to back up Ramos, but everyone knows who the starter will be. AdSS Willi CastroConfidence: LockRole: Starting shortstopThere are going to be some defensive miscues, especially on the throw. As a result, the Tigers will have an extra roster spot to play with -- that’s why there will be 27 names on this list. He bet on himself and won, allowing just three runs while striking out 15 batters in 11 spring innings. If we’re being honest, a conversation about Baddoo as a starter feels more justified than a conversation about earning a roster spot.

Spring Training Report: Changing The Baseball Could Lead To Fewer Home Runs

This week’s Spring Training Report looks at the slight changes to the baseball that could affect the game, the mounting injuries across MLB and a rare triple play. But MLB also doesn’t want big variations in the home run rate from season to season, particularly when that rate spikes. (To put that in perspective, 2014 saw 4,186 home runs, for a rate of 0.86 home runs per team per game.) Even the shortened 2020 season saw at rate of 1.28, which also broke the previous record, albeit over fewer games. The League denied it, but admitted the previous season that some small changes to the ball had affected hitting.
