Conservancy seeks helpers to battle invasive species at rare prairie fen preserve
International conservation group The Nature Conservancy recently put a call out for volunteers to help with maintenance work at a decades-old nature preserve in Lenawee County. The Ives Road Fen Preserve between Tecumseh and Adrian requires constant habitat work to keep invasive species in check, officials said. The invasive plant was brought from Eurasia to grow thick and tall hedgerows that crowd out native plant species. “Invasive plant management is one of our top priorities at this property. And since these are native shrubs, we leave scattered ones on the edges and that’s a constant seed source,” Pearson said.

mlive.comThe rich history of St. Mary Academy
The site that is now St. Mary's Park was once the home of St. Mary Academy. The first St. Mary Academy – constructed in 1880 – has a storied history that dates back to when the parishioners of the River Raisin Settlement chose St. Antione de Padoue (St. Anthony of Padua) as their patron saint on Nov. 16, 1794. Sister M. Rosalita refers to this area as the “motherhouse plat.”Another building – the rectory or “fatherhouse” – was built next to St. Mary Church so Monsignor Edward Joos – who later became full administrator of St. Mary Academy until the 1900s – would have a residency following his release as St. Mary Church pastor. In 1868, excavating for the main building and west wing of St. Mary Academy began. These structures remained in use until 1931 when the new I.H.M Motherhouse was built on the other side of Elm Avenue (the third St. Mary Academy was completed nearby in 1932).

Documentary showcases revival of Michigan's River Raisin
The River Raisin created prosperity for the people of Southeast Michigan, reflected in its many names, like the "river of sturgeon" and "river of grapes" given by Native Americans and French settlers. The river played a critical role in the history and development of Southeast Michigan. However, that legacy also left environmental damage that contaminated the river and weighed down riverside communities. Filmed over the course of 2018, the eleven minute video documents the recent work on the River Raisin to delist it as an Area of Concern (AOC), which includes removal of dams, installation of fish passages, and reinvigoration of the natural environment.
