Detroit’s historic WGPR-TV station helped amplify Black voices for decades
DETROIT – For decades, WGPR-TV in Detroit provided a distinct perspective as the first Black-owned TV station in the country. It was a movement spearheaded by Karen Hudson Samuels, who worked as the station’s news director for years. He sold several properties to raise enough money, with which he launched the TV station in 1975. “My mom said to call the station and talk to Karen Hudson or Joe Spencer,” James Jackson said. WGPR aired its last TV show in 1995, offering a distinctly Black perspective for three decades.
Ann Arbor Jewish Federation’s benefit goes virtual this year
ANN ARBOR – The Jewish Federation of Greater Ann Arbor will be moving its annual benefit The Main Event online this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. The virtual cabaret will kick off at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 21 and will feature performances from Broadway, film and TV star Tovah Feldshuh and Ann Arbor native Ari Axelrod. “This will be an evening of Broadway-caliber entertainment with the goal of supporting Jewish life locally and around the world,” reads the event website. 7-8 p.m. Cabaret with Tovah Feldshuh and Ari Axelrod on YouTube LiveAdDuring the performance, you may choose to enjoy a dinner catered by Amanda’s Kitchen, available for purchase. Iconic American television and radio host Larry King dies at 87

For those unfamiliar with “Jeopardy!,” Trebek presented himself as scholarly, serious, reserved -- all business, but he was really a down-to-earth person who had a bit of a wacky sense of humor. Growing up he idolized the championship Red Wings of the 1950s and in particular hockey legend Gordie Howe. While Trebek had many fans in this country, he was a national hero in Canada especially among hockey fans.

Now Laurence Fishburne is engaged in some real-life mystery in the new show he is a part of on The History Channel called “History’s Greatest Mysteries”. Fishburne spoke to Jason Carr about the new show and his own history as a successful actor. Fishburne said the show digs deeper into cases that have captivated and intrigued history buffs, like himself, and cases that little is known about. Assassin’s Creed to get live action adaptation after Netflix, Ubisoft strike deal
Netflix and Ubisoft made a deal to develop content based on the video game franchise Assassin’s Creed. Netflix has the rights to develop live action, animated and anime entertainment based on the game. The first series in development is slated to be a live action adaptation, according to a press release. “We’re thrilled to create an Assassin’s Creed series with Netflix and we look forward to developing the next saga in the Assassin’s Creed universe.”The search is on for a showrunner. “We’re excited to partner with Ubisoft and bring to life the rich, multilayered storytelling that Assassin’s Creed is beloved for,” said Peter Friedlander, Vice President, Original Series, Netflix.

’Count Scary and Me’: Former WDIV director reflects on taping ‘Scary’ specials
His famous catch phrase was “Ooooh, that’s scaary!” Count Scary would rank the scary level of each movie with a scale of pants, referring to scaring your pants off. Little did I know, that 20 years later, I would be a Director at WDIV working on the Count Scary shows. Suddenly he receives a phone call from one of his “fine boys” (Tom DeLisle) that he was needed at the studio. Tom DeLisle was such a great humorist and cheerleader; heck, we all got our own official Scary Jackets. One Tom is gone; we lost Tom DeLisle 2 years ago.
Showtime revives Dexter for 10-episode limited series, Michael C. Hall to return
Michael C. Hall will be returning to the role of Dexter after Showtime decided to revive the series for a 10-episode limited run. He’s Dexter Morgan, America’s favorite serial killer. Golden Globe winner Michael C. Hall returns with Clyde Phillips as showrunner,” the website reads. Production is expected to begin this winter with the series launching in the fall of next year, according to TVLine. Dexter began its run in the fall of 2006 and ended in 2013 after 8 seasons.
Actress Taylor Schilling talks about her new “monster” show
Many know her as Piper Chapman in the hit show, “Orange is the New Black”, but now actress Taylor Shilling is facing some major demons in her new show. Schilling spoke to Jason Carr about “Monsterland”, premiering on the streaming service HULU just in time for spooky season Halloween. Although Schilling says she is not big on scary movies, she was drawn to this show because it was more of a psychological thriller, digging into people’s fears and showing them. Former Charlie’s Angel tackles aging with optimism
Cheryl Ladd made her rise to fame as Kris Munroe, joining the cast of the original Charlie’s Angels in it’s second season. Ladd first began to think about aging when she noticed some changes to her eyesight. The doctor diagnosed her with cataracts, and Ladd said that she had always thought of cataracts as something for older generations. She said that after the surgery, she not only felt younger, but more optimistic about what her life would be like going forward. There are plenty of Cheryl Ladd projects to look forward to, including a possible team up between former agents.

Television icon Regis Philbin dies at 88
Regis Philbin, the legendary broadcaster who hosted the talk show "Live With Regis & Kathie Lee!" and later "Live With Regis & Kelly!," has died at age 88. Philbin died of natural causes on Friday night according to a representative with the family. Philbin had hosted multiple television shows, including Who Wants to be a Millionaire, Live! With Regis and Kathie Lee, Americas Got Talent and more.
Michigans Jeff Daniels to play ex-FBI director James Comey in Showtime series
Michigan native Jeff Daniels will play former FBI Director James Comey in an upcoming limited series on Showtime. Daniels will star along side Brendan Gleeson, who is playing President Donald Trump. The limited series, The Comey Rule, is slated to premiere in November, as a two-part, four-hour event. The series is based on Comeys best-selling book, A Higher Loyalty.According to Showtime, The Comey Rule is an immersive, behind-the-headlines account of the historically turbulent events surrounding the 2016 presidential election and its aftermath, which divided a nation. Love and song bloom in two new movies this holiday weekend
In this weeks Reel Talk, movie reviewer Greg Russell spoke to Jason Carr about two new movies hitting streaming services this weekend. The first movie Greg talked about was Military Wives, starring Kristin Scott Thomas and Sharon Hogan. The movie is about the formation of a choir of military wives whose spouses are away at war. However, now Bill Farmer is stepping in front of the cameras, after 33 years, to host a new show about one of our favorite pets, dogs. Its a Dogs Life with Bill Farmer on Disney+ will show Farmer highlighting real working dogs that have incredible jobs. He also talks to the dogs owners to learn more about their relationships and their interactions with people. From dogs finding diseases in people to helping track the humpback whale population, Farmer said he was shocked and amazed at the wonderful things dogs can do and how they help humans and fellow animals.
