Snowstorm totals are in: See how much you got, where 8 inches fell
Wednesday’s snow system was easy to measure without a lot of drifting. It was a solid 6 to 8 inch snow from Jackson to Ann Arbor to Monroe, the Detroit area and the eastern Thumb. As it very common in this type of snowstorm, the next row of counties had 4 to 6 inches of snow, and then a stripe of 2 to 4 inches of snow. Here are some of the exact National Weather Service snow reports from trained weather spotters. The heaviest snow was measured at Ann Arbor and Saline with 8.8 inches and 8.4 inches, respectively.

The Michigan Air National Guard is extending public comment for an extra month on a proposal that would increase military airspace in northeast Lower Michigan and the Thumb. MORE: Military airspace expansion plan irks Camp Grayling growth opponentsThe FAA previously said it plans to make a decision in early 2023. Gen. Bryan Teff, assistant adjutant general and commander of the Michigan Air National Guard, said in a news release. At 484 square miles, it’s already the nation’s largest National Guard training facility, spreading across parts of Crawford, Kalkaska and Otsego counties.

GRAYLING, MI — A proposed military airspace expansion over northern Michigan and the Thumb is drawing fire from officials and conservation groups already upset with potential growth of the Camp Grayling National Guard base. Map showing a proposed expansion of military airspace over Michigan. Airspace expansion would increase the use of chaff and flares, which deteriorate into magnesium oxide, chloride and fluoride in water. Although the airspace expansion would not involve any new construction on land, opponents nonetheless see it as another side to the Camp Grayling expansion coin. PFAS pollution from past use of firefighting foam at Camp Grayling was mentioned multiple times.
mlive.comMetro Detroit weather: Cool morning with big changes coming
Good Wednesday morning! It is very tolerable out there while also being cool for anyone heading out and about early on this Hump Day. We are once again seeing some cloud cover coming and going with more active weather in the middle of the country and parts farther west. Our air is dry, which eliminates the chances for anything leaking from the scattered morning clouds. Temperatures are not as cool as the last couple of mornings with most of Metro Detroit in the middle 30s to near 40 degrees so, grab a light jacket knowing that you will be able to shed a layer later in the day.

Parade of snowstorms continues; See how next 2 storms impact Michigan
This parade of storms has two storms heading toward the eastern U.S. in the next week. Snowstorm track forecast for first storm this Thursday into Friday, based on the U.S. Ensemble forecast. Below is the ensemble snow forecast. Using the same legend as the first snow map, and using situational forecasting, the Sunday/Monday system initially looks like a two to five inch snow. With a track of a storm just south of Michigan, I’d lay out the two to five inch snow area across the southern half of Lower Michigan.
mlive.comSnowstorm update: How much fell, how much left to fall
So there are still a few inches of snow left to fall, mostly in the immediate Detroit area and the Thumb. There will still be pockets of moderate snow around the Detroit area and the Thumb. Here’s the model I like best now for additional snow to fall today. Total ADDITIONAL snow from 7 a.m. to end of snow today. The Thumb Counties of Lapeer, Sanilac, Tuscola and Huron should get another two to four inches of snow before mid-afternoon.

mlive.comMetro Detroit weather: Quiet couple of days ahead of snow, cold
DETROIT – As expected, Monday’s light snow that bulged westward from that big east coast storm didn’t have much impact on our local weather, and we now have a couple of quieter days ahead. Lows in the mid teens (-9 degrees Celsius), but colder in our western rural areas that start the evening clear and maximize their radiational cooling potential. AdWednesday is likely going to be our nicest day of the next 10 days, so get out and enjoy the sunshine and low 30s (0 degrees Celsius) afternoon highs. Afternoon highs in the mid 30s (1 degree Celsius), with temps actually rising a bit more Thursday evening. AdCloudy Friday night, with lows in the low teens (-11 degrees Celsius).
Snowstorm totals show the axis of 6 inch snow cutting across Lower Michigan
The heaviest snow from the Monday night-Tuesday morning storm fell in a swath from north of Grand Rapids to the Saginaw Bay region and the Thumb. Across eastern Lower Michigan the snow was heaviest in the eastern Thumb, as expected. Far southern Lower, including Ann Arbor and Detroit, had some drizzle mix with the snow and produced lighter snow totals. This is what I’ve always called “situational forecasting.” In situational forecasting, I look at what that type of storm normally drops for its heaviest snow band. Initially two days out the I-94 corridor looked to get the heaviest snow.
mlive.comSnow evolving into snowstorm for Thumb, Saginaw Valley area
The snow system is underachieving for some, but really picking up for the Thumb and Saginaw Valley area. In the eastern Thumb I think you’ll call it a snowstorm, with amounts around six inches total snow. Total additional snow expected from 11 a.m. Tuesday to 2 a.m. Wednesday. Grand Rapids, Lansing and Flint could have between one and two inches of additional snow by ending time mid-afternoon. The exception will be the eastern Thumb where it may be late evening before the snow ends.

Metro Detroit weather: Quiet days ahead, until the weekend
Things look pretty quiet for the next five days, but then comes this weekend -- I’ll address that in a moment. Mostly sunny on Thursday -- this is the pick day of the week -- with highs in the mid 40s (8 degrees Celsius). Highs may still reach the upper 40s (9 degrees Celsius) in the mild air mass ahead of the front. Steady temperatures in the mid 30s (2 degrees Celsius).
Hey Michigan, it’s December. Where’s all the snow?
Across many parts of Michigan, snowmobilers and ski enthusiasts are starting to get a little antsy. These were in scattered locations, like the Thumb in the Lower Peninsula, and then far along the northern reaches of the Upper Peninsula in places like the Keweenaw Peninsula and sections between L’anse and Marquette. “If you live in Southwest Lower MI, you will have to travel quite a distance to find some snow on the ground,” NWS meteorologists said. True to form for that, our October and November temperatures in Michigan have been warmer than normal. There's a decent chance of temperatures being a little... mlive.comMichigan Restaurant Leaves Franchise Over Virus Restrictions
(AP) – A Big Boy restaurant in Michigan’s Thumb region has lost its name after the owners refused to stop indoor dining as part of statewide restrictions to slow the spread of the coronavirus. Customers were greeted with Sandusky Diner instead of Sandusky Big Boy, the name for 35 years. Big Boy restaurants are known by their statue of a boy in checkered overalls holding a burger over his head. The Sandusky location, was one of four eateries cited for violating the state’s order against indoor dining. “We had already decided we weren’t going to do that,” Tank told The Associated Press.

Big Boy takes legal action against Michigan franchise defying state order to stop in-person dining
SANDUSKY, MI - The corporate branch of Big Boy Restaurants is getting involved after a Big Boy franchise located in Michigan’s Thumb region defied a statewide order requiring restaurants to close indoor dining spaces for three weeks due to coronavirus. In a statement, Big Boy said it was taking legal action to stop the franchise from operating under its name while it remains out of compliance. Big Boy Restaurant Group LLC is headquartered in Warren. “Big Boy has and always will be dedicated to the health and safety of our customers and staff,” the statement reads. “The actions of a franchisee in Sandusky, Michigan are not representative of Big Boy as a brand, our operations, or standards.”How the process will play out is up in the air at the moment, Tank said.
mlive.comBig Boy restaurant in Michigan’s Thumb stays open, owner says he’ll fight cease-and-desist order
SANDUSKY, MI - A Big Boy restaurant franchise in Michigan’s Thumb region started a GoFundMe page Monday, Nov. 23, to support its refusal to close dine-in service, despite a cease-and-desist order from the Sanilac County Health Department. Troy Tank, part owner of the restaurant located about 90 miles north of Detroit, said the GoFundMe is to help the restaurant pay potential fines and legal fees for its decision to remain open. “I just felt like our back was up against the wall and we needed to do something about it,” Tank said. The GoFundMe “freedom fund” attracted $840 in donations as of 4:30 p.m. Monday out of a $10,000 goal. Tank said the donations will go toward potential legal fees and fines, with any leftovers going to other restaurants or organizations fighting restrictions.

Some customers left without power after a wind storm swept across mid-Michigan and the Thumb region over the weekend may not see their lights come back on for a few more days. mlive.comMetro Detroit weather: Dry, mild Friday with frost possible tonight
The one exception will be in the Thumb, where Lake Huron moisture will give you more cloud cover and some scattered showers. The third ingredient is cloud cover, and that’s the question mark. Enough high resolution models bring in some of this cloud cover – which acts as a blanket and holds some heat in - that I think many of us won’t see frost. Our Urban Heat Island has the lowest risk, as temps there will only drop into the upper 30s (4 degrees Celsius). Next weekMonday looks great, with mostly sunny skies and highs near 60 degrees (15 to 16 degrees Celsius).
Metro Detroit weather: What to expect this week
The smoke will limit highs to the upper 60s (20 degrees Celsius) many of us / mid 60s (18 to 19 degrees Celsius) in the Thumb. Mostly sunny with light wind on Saturday, and highs in the mid 60s (18 degrees Celsius) will feel very pleasant in the abundant sunshine that we’ll have. Teen hunter killed when run over by corn harvester near Caseville
CASEVILLE, Mich. – A 14-year-old deer hunter who possibly fell asleep in a farm field was killed when he was run over by a corn harvester in Michigan’s Thumb region, police said. Emergency workers were called about 9 a.m. Saturday to the cornfield in a rural area near the Huron County city of Caseville after a farm worker spotted the boy soon after accidentally driving over him, according to the county sheriff’s office. The boy from the nearby city of Elkton had been dropped off earlier for deer hunting at the field and might have fallen asleep, the sheriff’s office said. The farm worker wasn’t aware that anyone was in the field. The boy’s identity wasn’t immediately released by authorities and an autopsy was expected to be performed in the coming days.

Temperatures today will range from near 60 degrees (16 degrees Celsius) in the Thumb, to the mid 60s (18 degrees Celsius) across the central part of the area, to the upper 70s (26 degrees Celsius) near the state line. Highs will range from the mid 60s (18 degrees Celsius) in the Thumb to the upper 70s (26 degrees Celsius) near the state line. With a bit of luck, perhaps we hold onto the dry weather into early Saturday evening before rain showers move in. Overnight lows near 60 degrees (15 to 16 degrees Celsius). Highs in the mid 70s (25 degrees Celsius).

Winter storm in Metro Detroit: Snow continues to pile up
DETROIT The snow began lightly this morning, picked up right on schedule, and its really coming down now across parts of the area. Early snow reports suggest that a widespread three-to-four inches has fallen, with very little accumulation southeast of a line from Trenton to Dundee to Morenci. These bands will be much more efficient snow-producers than our usual mid-winter Lake Huron snow bands, and some areas that remain under the most persistent bands could receive between one and two feet of snow. Keep in mind that these will be narrow stripes of the heaviest snow, and amount will be much less either side of where those snow bands set up. There is a light snowmaker moving in late, late Wednesday into early Thursday which may slow down that Thursday morning drive.
Metro Detroit weather forecast: Spectacular weather continues into weekend
DETROIT - The weather in Metro Detroit on Friday feels a little more like early fall. This is some pretty spectacular weather we hope you all get to enjoy. The rest of us will enjoy a nice sun and cloud balance with temperatures in the mid- to upper 70s. It will be a very pleasant evening to go for an outdoor dinner or relax on the patio. SundaySunday will be similar to Saturday, but a few degrees warmer after a pleasant morning in the 50s.
Michigan weather: Lakeshore Flood Advisory in effect for St. Clair, Sanilac counties
A Lakeshore Flood Advisory is in effect for those on the shoreline of Lake Huron on Thursday. Waves could be 4-8 feet on Lake Huron causing some shoreline issues and possible flooding. That also means parts of the Thumb in our North Zone will be closer to 70 degrees today rather than 80 degrees. A Lakeshore Flood Advisory indicates that onshore winds will generate waves and high water level capable of lakeshore flooding and beach erosion, along with damage to property near or on the water.
