Saginaw business pitch competition organizers signing up next round of entrepreneurs

SAGINAW, MI — After wrapping up their most recent gathering, Saginaw Soup Pitch Competition organizers already are thinking about the next event. The bi-annual competition features local entrepreneurs pitching their small business ideas to a panel of judges and audience members for prizes, including cash up to $2,000. “Entrepreneurs can’t just sign up to pitch; it’s a whole process to go through our application process,” said Zimmerman, a business development manager for Saginaw Future Inc. The gathering is aimed at prospective business owners or entrepreneurs in the early stages of developing a company, she said. Interested applicants should visit the Saginaw Soup Pitch Competition Facebook page for information on how to register for the November event, Zimmerman said.

Holland edge Bay City Western runner Ambria Nagel, who attracted 16,689 votes for second. Ogemaw Heights’ Kooper Klann, Bay City Central’s Benny Facundo and John Glenn’s Kaylene Darbee all had strong showings of support on the poll. It has paid off in the form of five event victories this season across the 200 dash, 400 dash and long jump. He’s also making a name for himself in the long jump, an event where he claimed titles last year at the USA and Laker invitationals.

ANN ARBOR – For the second year, the Ann Arbor Film Festival will take place online due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Now in its 59th year, the Ann Arbor Film Festival is the oldest experimental film festival in North America. This year, the festival will run from March 23-28 and will feature over 100 films in competition. Tickets for individual events start at $2, but the suggested price is $12 to help support the festival. AdThree levels of festival passes give viewers varying access to programming.

Annual high school talent show in Ann Arbor goes virtual

ANN ARBOR – Pioneer Theatre Guild’s 19th annual FutureStars talent show will still take place this year, but with a twist. Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, all performances from the citywide talent search featuring students from Ann Arbor’s public high schools will be going virtual. But to keep the show true to form, all 19 solo performances will be pre-recorded onstage in Pioneer High School’s Schreiber Auditorium -- the event’s venue in years past. Skyline High School senior and second year FutureStars participant Nate Frison said that the transition to virtual practice sessions was very smooth. Detroit charter school selected as semi-finalist in $2M STEM competition

DETROIT – A charter school in southwest Detroit is getting some national attention after being named a semi-finalist in the $2 million Samsung Solve For Tomorrow STEM competition. The Hope of Detroit Academy is the only school in Michigan to make it to the semi-finals and will receive $15,000. Seven of the schools will receive $65,000, and the final three schools will receive the grand prize of $130,000.

Sixth-grader from Ann Arbor stars in Food Network’s ‘Kids Baking Championship’

ANN ARBOR – For local student Nemo Tsai, 2020 was as normal a year as could be until a casting agent from Food Network reached out to him on Instagram to audition for Season 9 of “Kids Baking Championship.”Nemo’s family has owned Japanese-American fusion restaurant Godaiko and Tsai Grocery in southwest Ann Arbor for more than 25 years. Raised in the kitchen, Nemo was making sushi rolls before he was five years old, and recently took up baking after watching videos on YouTube. “This was the first season that parents get onto the show and react,” said Nemo. Aside from the title of Kids Baking Champion, the winner of the Kids Baking Championship will take home a grand prize of $25,000 and will get a spot in Food Network Magazine.

Ann Arbor Film Festival to start paying filmmakers who show work at competitions

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Filmmakers showing their films at this year’s 59th Ann Arbor Film Festival can now expect to be paid for their art. On Tuesday, the film festival organization announced it will begin paying artists to show their films at competitions, starting with its upcoming festival in March. “Artists pour money, time, energy, heart, and soul into their work, and are usually the last to see compensation. Here’s hoping my contribution spurs others to join this movement, recognizing and rewarding the work of artists who enhance our lives in immeasurable ways.”The 59th Ann Arbor Film Festival will run from March 23-28, 2021. The festival was founded in 1963 and has since become the oldest independent and avant-garde film festival in North America.

Ann Arbor Film Festival extends call for entries for 59th season

ANN ARBOR – The Ann Arbor Film Festival announced it has extended its call for entries for the 59th festival until Oct. 15. In order to welcome more diverse voices to its lineup, the festival is offering a $20 submission fee discount for BIPOC filmmakers -- the same discount it offers its alumni. According to its website, AAFF seeks films and videos that “demonstrate a high regard for the moving image as an experimental art form, no matter the genre." Work must have been completed within the last three years, and works in progress are juried in the same pool as other entries. Feature submissions are $70 per film and shorts submissions are $60 per film.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. Watch six regional startups pitch their businesses for the chance to win $20,000. The pitch competition has been organized by the Ann Arbor Entrepreneurs Fund and will be hosted by Dug Song, Founder of Duo Security and A2EF steering committee member. Applications for the pitch competition were open to startups serving Washtenaw and Wayne counties that focused on social impact.
