DNR: Rash of brush fires reported around Michigan
ALPENA, Mich. – A dry winter and recent sunny skies have led to a rash of recent brush fires around the state, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources says. Since Friday, the agency has responded to at least 40 such fires in the state, said Don Klingler, DNR resource protection manager for the Lower Peninsula. A fast-moving grass fire Monday burned 86 acres in northeast Michigan's Alcona County, The Alpena News reported. Roger MacNeill, a forest fire officer at the Lincoln DNR office, said the fire jumped a drainage ditch and the Black River. Grass fires have been rampant in Michigan this spring, with about 20 burning at once on Monday, including one that burned 600 acres in Manistee, MacNeill said.
Michigan man leaves debit card with his name on it inside house after using it to break in
ALPENA TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A Michigan man used a debit card with his name on it to break into a home, then left the card inside and was later arrested, police said. When troopers got to the woman’s house, they found the door had been forced open using a debit card. They said a damaged debit card with Tanner’s name on it was found at the scene. AdTanner was being held at the Kent County Jail on unrelated charges, according to police. He was arraigned from the Kent County Jail on Thursday (March 4) and charged with second-degree home invasion.
12 Michigan properties added to National Register of Historic Places
Twelve Michigan properties have earned special recognition in the 2020 National Register of Historic Places, the Michigan Economic Development Corporation announced. The National Register of Historic Places is the United States federal government’s official list of districts, sites, buildings, structures, and objects deemed worthy of preservation for their historical significance. More than 95,000 properties across the country, including nearly 2,000 in Michigan, have been listed in the National Register since the program began in the 1960s. The National Register is a program of the National Park Service and administered by the states. In the state, it’s administered by the Michigan State Historic Preservation Office.
Alpena man charged with sexually abusing minor
ALPENA, Mich. – An Alpena man has been arrested and charged with first-degree criminal sexual conduct. Michigan State Police were called to investigate a report of sexual abuse of a minor on Saturday. The abuse was reported to have began in 2018, police said. Police said the victim of the abuse reported it to her mother, who then contacted Child Protective Services. He was charged with two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct and one count of accosting a child for immoral purposes.
49 guns stolen from Michigan gun store, $5,000 reward offered for information
ALPENA, Mich. – The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the National Shooting Sports Foundation are offering a $5,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the individuals responsible for a northern Michigan gun store burglary. According to authorities, the burglary happened at about 4:15 a.m., Nov. 21 at Full Bore Firearms, located on Crittenden Court in Alpena. Police said two unknown people threw a brick through the front glass window of the building and stole 49 firearms. The burglary is being investigated by officers with the ATF, Michigan State Police and Alpena County Sheriff’s Office. 2 dead in Alpena Township building fire

Single-car crash kills 16-year-old boy in Wilson Township
WILSON TOWNSHIP, Mich. Michigan State Police are investigating a fatal single-car crash that occurred in Wilson Township on Tuesday afternoon. Police say at around 3:43 p.m. a 16-year-old boy lost control of a 2007 Kia Sorento in a series of small hits while driving westbound on Taylor Hawks Road near Rogers Road. The vehicle overturned multiple times and the driver was ejected from the vehicle. The boy was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said. Speed is believed to be a factor in the crash.
40 people arrested during Detroit’s fourth night of protests, police say
DETROIT – Detroit police say 40 individuals from Detroit and throughout Michigan were arrested on Monday night during the city’s fourth night of protesting police brutality Downtown.
