Ypsilanti-area nonprofit celebrates 40th anniversary with community mural
YPSILANTI TWP., MI - A recently-completed mural by an Ypsilanti Township nonprofit is brightening up Ecorse Road with a message of building community to alleviate poverty and suffering. The mural is the finished product of volunteers and staff members at Friends In Deed who collaborated with TreeTown Murals to create the mural to commemorate the nonprofit’s 40th anniversary. “This mural is very symbolic of the work of Friends In Deed,” mural project chair Kate Roos said. State Senator Jeff Irwin, D-Ann Arbor, offered a signed tribute to commemorate the community mural project, noting that when people work together to chip in, it improves the community for everyone. YPSILANTI, MI -- An Ypsilanti nonprofit will be celebrating 40 years with a community mural-painting event. Friend In Deed, an Ypsilanti nonprofit providing emergency assistance to low and moderate income families in Washtenaw County, will be hosting a mural-painting event from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10 at its building, 1196 Ecorse Road in Ypsilanti. Community members are invited to participate in painting the mural through TreeTown Murals’ “paint by number” system. The final mural will be revealed and celebrated from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 23 at 1196 Ecorse Road in Ypsilanti. It’s our working together that creates that unity and creates that vitality, and we can help each other to build a better world,” MacDonald said.

Humane Society of Huron Valley seeks tips on mutilated dog found in Ypsilanti
YSPILANTI, Mich. – Humane Society of Huron Valley (HSHV) animal cruelty investigators are asking community members for leads about a dead dog found on the side of Ecorse Road near Michigan Avenue in Ypsilanti on Monday. “These weren’t stabs,” said HSHV Animal Cruelty and Rescue Supervisor Melinda Szabelski. AdThe family found the mutilated dog on the side of the road two-and-a-half miles away from their home after searching and posting online. They called HSHV animal cruelty investigators after seeing that the dog may have been intentionally harmed, said HSHV. Humane Society investigators didn’t find blood or any other typical signs that the dog may have been hit by a car, the organization said.
Teen killed, 4 others hurt in Van Buren Township head-on crash, police say

VAN BUREN TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A teenager was killed and four other people were taken to a hospital after a head-on crash in Van Buren Township, police said. Officials with Van Buren Township Public Safety said the two-car crash happened around 6:25 p.m. Sunday (Feb. 7) on Belleville Road, south of Ecorse Road. A 19-year-old Van Buren Township resident, who was riding as a passenger in the G6, was killed in the crash, authorities said. The Van Buren Township Accident Investigation Team is investigating the crash.
Driver reports shooting on I-94 near Ecorse Road
TAYLOR, Mich. The westbound lanes of I-94 were closed at Telegraph Road for several hours Thursday morning for a police investigation after a shooting on the interstate. Michigan State Police said troopers were dispatched about 3:50 a.m. to a shooting on the freeway. A man said he had been shot at while driving on westbound I-94 near Ecorse Road. The driver was not hurt and continued driving to work. The man who called police is a concealed pistol license (CPL) holder.
Driver calls shooting on I-94 near Telegraph a case of road rage
TAYLOR, Mich. A driver on I-94 said multiple shots were fired at his car in a case of road rage Thursday morning. It happened at I-94 and Telegraph Road, leaving the freeway shutdown for hours for police to investigate. Lacour Vaughn was on his way to work just before 4 a.m. when he noticed a driver weaving in and out of traffic. I switched lanes so I could pass him and I guess he didnt like that and a case of road rage happened, Vaughn said. The shooting shut down I-94 just as morning traffic started to pick up.

2 charged in connection with fatal shooting of Romulus man at gas station
ROMULUS, Mich. Two people have been charged in connection with the fatal shooting of Brian Eugene Davis, 40, of Romulus. Davis was shot and killed on May 19 at 8:35 p.m. in Romulus. Police officers were called to a gas station in the 27400 block of Eureka Road near Inkster Road. When officers arrived they saw the Romulus Fire Department rescue and Taylor rescue teams on scene. Officials said Davis approached the defendants vehicle and McMillon, who was a passenger, pulled out a weapon and shot Davis.

The westbound I-94 service drive/collector distributor will be closed at Merriman Road due to the bridge work. Merriman Road access to westbound I-94 will be maintained. Northbound Middle Belt Road and the ramp to westbound I-94 will be closed for bridge and railing work. The detour includes eastbound Wick Road to northbound Inkster Road, then westbound Ecorse Road to Middle Belt Road. Bridge work includes epoxy overlay, beam repair, rail patching, substructure replacement and repair, and deck patching.
