The Detroit spot opened on Tuesday, just in time for Paczki Day — with Promenade offering "craczki," or their take on the Polish favorite using croissant dough.Aside from pastries, the spot serves lunches and grab-and-go dinners.The restaurant takes the space of the former City Bakery, which closed during the pandemic.A number of restaurants have opened or are opening soon in the area. East African restuarant Baobab Fare opened last week, joining nearby YumVillage Afro-Caribbean Market Pantry. A forthcoming second location for Supino Pizzeria is also on the way, as well as Joe Louis Southern Kitchen.Promenade Artisan Foods is located at 3011 E Grand Blvd., Detroit; 734-307-7061; promenadeartisanfoods.square.site . Detroit celebrates high voter turnout for 2020 General Election
DETROIT – Millions of Americans celebrated Saturday over former vice president Joe Biden’s projected win in the 2020 General Election. In Lansing, others weren’t as happy with the election results. Celebrations were held in New York City, Philadelphia, D.C. and even here in Michigan. Among the crowd of Detroiters were signs like “Voters Decided” and “Count Every Vote.” They all gathered in New Center just hours after President-Elect Joe Biden secured enough electoral votes to beat President Donald Trump. Claire Allenson, with 313 Votes, an organization that promotes voter education, responded to Donald Trump calling out the Detroit voting process.
Benson assures voters that Michigan polls are safe, and the state is election-ready
Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson said communities are prepared for Election Day and that resident should feel confident that the polls are "safe and clean. “As the Court of Appeals confirmed, anyone who intimidates a voter in Michigan by brandishing a firearm is committing a felony, and this is enforceable by Michigan State Police and local law enforcement. That means polling places won’t be as crowded.Election officials are expecting the biggest turnout ever for a presidential election in Michigan. Nearly 132,000 Detroiters have cast an absentee ballot as of this weekend, or about a third of registered voters. Detroit officials are expecting a 50% voter turnout.

Affordable housing development planned for Detroits Milwaukee Junction neighborhood
DETROIT The City of Detroits Housing and Revitalization Department announced Tuesday construction plans for a new affordable housing project in the citys Milwaukee Junction neighborhood. According to a press release, the 22,845 square-foot, four-story development is planned to be located at 258 Milwaukee Street and cost about $8 million. This is truly a mixed-income development, one that is representative of the community as a whole, Donald Rencher, director of the Housing and Revitalization Department, said in the release. It also creates affordable housing opportunities in an area experiencing rising rents. A successful city is an inclusive city, and this is why it is one of our key missions as a department.The housing initiative was initiated through the Low-Income Housing Tax Credits from the Michigan State Housing Development Authority, as well as support from the citys Housing and Revitalization Department and citys Housing Commission.

Work is well underway at the Albert Kahn Building in New Center to convert the historic office building into 206 studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments with ground-floor retail. Meanwhile, developers Adam Lutz and Matt Sosin have just made another major purchase across the street. Near the end of 2019, the groups closed on the former WJBK-TV Studios building at 7441 2nd Avenue for $2.6 million. Instead, the group is focused on completing The Residences at the Albert Kahn and are offering the WJBK building for rent. Given all the activity currently underway in New Center, we expect WJBK to also get redeveloped at some point.

A 231-unit mixed-use building, The Boulevard, has officially opened in New Center on the site of a former surface parking lot. It took longer to build than we thought it would and it cost more, and thats the bad news, Peter Cummings, CEO of The Platform, said at a grand opening event. The apartments at the Third Avenue and West Grand Boulevard building are a mix of studios, one-, and two-bedroom units with a variety of floor plans for each type. This project is one of many being worked on by the Platform in the greater New Center area. Its also redeveloping a former cold storage building on East Grand Boulevard into a coworking space and food hall, an Albert Kahndesigned building at 6001 Cass Avenue into office space, and more.

The Detroit Pistons today opened the Henry Ford Detroit Pistons Performance Center, a $90 million state-of-the-art training center and corporate headquarters in the New Center area of Detroit. Pistons owner Tom Gores lauded the Pistons homecoming and progressive alliance with Henry Ford Health System as beneficial for basketball, business, and the City of Detroit. The facility will serve as a hub for fitness, health, and nutrition programming through the Detroit Pistons Fit and annual NBA Fit Week programming. The Henry Ford Detroit Pistons Performance Center is the first NBA facility to introduce publicly accessible food and beverage and fitness retail areas. With the opening of their new corporate headquarters and practice facility, the Pistons move back to Detroit is now complete, said Mayor Mike Duggan.

Last week, it looked as if the Greyhound bus station on Howard Street near downtown and Corktown wouldnt be around much longer. The decision was made after a September 16 site visit to Detroits Amtrak station in New Center, which was thought to be a possible landing spot for Greyhound. We conducted multiple tests with a typical intercity motor coach and determined the Amtrak facility is too narrow for these buses to safely pull out into traffic. Last week, MDOT said that a number of developers had expressed interest in buying the 2.2-acre Greyhound site, and were likely to demolish the station to make way for a new development. MDOT informed Greyhound that it had to vacate by October 13, which left the bus company scrambling for a new location.

Last year, the university purchased the NextEnergy Center, now called the Industry Innovation Center (I2C), on Burroughs Street across from TechTown Detroit. Those three partners have teamed up to create Detroit Urban Solutions, which is taking a multidisciplinary approach to address issues facing cities. Detroit Urban Solutions and its network of partners have embarked upon a path to leverage technology to further define the way we interact with cities and the systems that support them, Paul Riser, director of Detroit Urban Solutions, told Curbed Detroit by email. One block away, Wayne State opened the Integrative Biosciences Center (IBio) in 2015, which similarly takes a multidisciplinary approach to health research.

What was once an area of vacant storefronts in the New Center area is now home to several small business including The Kitchen, by Cooking with Que, a place where vegans and meat eaters coexist. Owner Quiana Que Broden is on a mission to teach people how to eat to live and offer a variety of plant-based meals. Que has had this dream for four years, its not easy to start a business or to expand a business. Owners of the Fisher Building announced that it began work this week to prep Detroits Largest Art Object for restoration of its exterior and entrances. It will also soon begin long-deferred work to repair entrances on both Grand Boulevard and Third Avenue. In July 2019, the owners of the Fisher Building closed on a major loan refinance to continue much-needed maintenance and preservation efforts on the historic Art Deco building in New Center. Soon after, they announced up to $100 million in upgrades to the Fisher and adjacent Albert Kahn buildings. In October 2019, Strategic Staffing Solutions announced that it would move all of its estimated 1,400 employees into the Fisher, making it the buildings largest tenant.
