Washtenaw County residents eligible for respite care scholarships from Alzheimerโs Association
The $1,000 scholarships are available for residents of Genesee, Lapeer, Lenawee, Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, St. Clair, Washtenaw and Wayne counties. ANN ARBOR, Mich. โ Families caring for loved ones in Washtenaw County can now receive $1,000 scholarships to help with the cost of respite care. Offered by the Alzheimerโs Association Michigan Chapter, the scholarships are aimed at relieving some of the stress and financial burden of caring for individuals with Alzheimerโs disease or related dementia. LANSING, Mich. โ More than 62,000 people have applied to Michigan Reconnect since the program launched on Feb. 2. The program is called Michigan Reconnect. The number of applicants jumped last week when 14,000 Michiganders who applied but didnโt qualify for Futures for Frontliners were automatically enrolled for Michigan Reconnect. Exotic car parade raises money for Women of Tomorrow organization
DETROIT โ A local mentorship program for girls has come up with a pretty unique way to hold a socially distant fundraiser. In September, a room at the M-1 concourse was supposed to be filled with tables, a band and people all to raise money for Women of Tomorrow Mentor & Scholarship Program. โHelp them just get through life.โShe and many other car lovers havenโt had much opportunity to drive their cars this summer. The hope is this parade will give more recognition to an organization thatโs been making a difference in our community for over a decade. Itโs already raised more than $200,000 for Women of Tomorrow.
Detroit high school senior receives millions of dollars in scholarships
DETROIT His name is Ridgeley Hudson Jr., and he just graduated from King High School in Detroit. After he received multiple scholarships worth more than $2 million from schools all across the country, we had to find out which school hell be attending. I never thought that Id be here at this moment with scholarships to the tune of $2.3 million, Hudson said. Wayne State, University of Arkansas Pine Bluff, Morehouse, Georgia State, Hampton University.He was motivated, and when he wasnt motivated, we motivated him, King High School counselor Denise Barnes said. While Hudson might be surprised at his accomplishment, King High School Principal Deborah Jenkins is not.
Entire Detroit club volleyball team earns college athletic scholarships
DETROIT All nine members of a club volleyball team in Detroit secured athletic scholarships to college despite the roadblocks created by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. It was a very turbulent year, but the whole traveling team secured athletic scholarships. Coach Twon Davis had an idea years ago to use volleyball as a way to get girls, and now boys, to college. What I found working with kids with Club Xtreme -- they needed more resources -- rides, support, equipment, Smith said. Club Xtreme Volleyball accepts players ages eight to 18.
Ann Arbor YMCA expands in-person summer camp opportunities
ANN ARBOR The Ann Arbor YMCA has expanded its in-person and virtual summer day camps for kids ages 5-16. Starting the week of July 6, in-person, full-day camps will be held in locations in Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti and Pinckney. Virtual day camps will begin the week of June 15. In-person camps include:Camp Birkett - 9141 Dexter-Townhall Road, PinckneyThe full-day camp runs 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on the shores of Silver Lake. The camp location will be moved to the Ann Arbor YMCA from Aug. 24-28.
