DETROIT โ Childrenโs Hospital of Michigan staff gathered to say goodbye to one little girl. At 5 years old, Kyla went through a heart transplant. The little girl from Macomb County spent much time in and out of the hospital in need of a new heart. โThis means a whole new step to Kylaโs new life and weโre extremely excited,โ said Kylaโs mother. Santa makes virtual visits to pediatric patients in Ann Arbor
ANN ARBOR โ Though this pandemic has canceled most yearly events and traditions, Santa isnโt one of them. The man in the red suit and Mrs. Claus made virtual visits from the North Pole via Zoom to sick children at Michigan Medicine C.S. Child and Family Life staff made the cherished yearly visit possible by bringing Santa room to room on an iPad. โBecause of their health conditions, visiting Santa isnโt possible for many of them, let alone during a pandemic. This is the second time the magazine has ranked pediatric hospitals for innovation. Parents spotlighted Mott for its innovation in research and treatment of pediatric brain tumors. Research at Mott has demonstrated that tumor DNA in spinal fluid could help diagnose and treat young cancer patients with aggressive brain tumors.
Detroit firefighters pull woman, young boy from house fire on Clayburn Street
DETROIT โ Detroit firefighters pulled a 20-year-old woman and a young boy from a burning home Tuesday afternoon in the 7400 block of Clayburn Street. The woman and child, who is believed to be either 4 or 5 years old, suffered burns and smoke inhalation. The woman was taken to Detroit Receiving Hospital with burns over 50 percent of her body and suffering from smoke inhalation. The boy was taken to Childrenโs Hospital with burns, also suffering from smoke inhalation. According to the Detroit Fire Department, firefighters pulled them from the house right when they arrived about noon Tuesday.
11-year-old boy rings bell, signaling end of cancer treatment
DETROIT โ An 11-year-old, who battled and now overcome cancer twice in his lifetime, rang the bell to signal the end of his treatment. After several months, Pedro Martinez was able to leave Childrenโs Hospital. He experienced a relapse earlier this year and had to receive a bone marrow transplant from his father. (This year) 2020 has been a tough year for all of us, and itโs moments like this that really brings us together,โ said Kathy Donovan, chief executive officer of Childrenโs Hospital of Michigan. Childrenโs Hospital of Michigan is home to the regionโs only pediatric bone marrow transplant unit.
Metro Detroit family shocked by massive ambulance bill after child transported with dog bite
DETROIT โ A Metro Detroit family was stunned by a massive ambulance bill after their child was taken less than 25 miles at normal traffic speeds with a non-life-threatening dog bite. Little Kennaโs family was stunned when they received a bill for more than $5,000 from the ambulance company. Theyโve been battling the ambulance company for months, and the issue wasnโt resolved until Help Me Hank stepped in. They claim they tried to negotiate with Superior Ambulance, but didnโt have any luck. โWeโre thankful to Help Me Hank,โ Saltzman said.

REDFORD TOWNSHIP, Mich. The mother of a 5-year-old girl who was accidentally shot by her younger brother, who found a loaded gun, in Redford Township has a message for other parents with guns. The shooting happened around 1:30 a.m. Monday inside a mobile home on Plymouth Road near Haggerty Road in Redford Township, police said. Karina Norwood is recovering at Childrens Hospital after her 4-year-old brother found a loaded gun and accidentally shot her in the head. He woke up, went into a back bedroom and unlocked a small closet, which had a loaded gun inside, Kiser said. He thought it was a toy gun, Kiser said.
6-month-old girl suffers fractured skull in multi-vehicle crash on I-75 in Detroit
DETROIT Police are investigating the cause of a six-car crash on I-75. A 6-month-old girl has been hospitalized with a fractured skull due to the crash, according to police. The crash happened at 5:30 p.m. in the southbound lanes of I-75 near the Clay exit in Detroit. The girl was taken to Childrens Hospital and is in critical condition.
River Rouge high schooler celebrates surviving COVID-19 after 3 weeks on ventilator
RIVER ROUGE, Mich. A senior at River Rouge High School is celebrating more than one type of graduation after he spent three weeks on a ventilator and survived the coronavirus (COVID-19). Alijah Cromartie, 18, thought he would be spending this month finishing his senior year at River Rouge. Cromartie was discharged Thursday, and RIM staff members wanted to make sure it didnt go unnoticed. It wasnt the graduation he had planned, but Cromartie couldnt hide his job as the staff celebrated him beating the coronavirus. After three weeks on a ventilator at Childrens Hospital, Cromartie went to RIM to continue his recovery.

Judge to decide if 14-year-old Michigan boy will be taken off life support

For the last 500 days, little Jack Shields called the hospital his home. So when it came time for him be discharged, staff celebrated his improved health with a sweet goodbye. Jack and his dad, Joe Shields, were met with a row of smiling nurses and doctors, who bid them farewell with hugs. Hes a fighter, and hes overcome every challenge hes faced with a smile on his face, Shields said, according to Nationwide Childrens Hospital. Jacks condition ended up being direr than his twins, and he spent nearly 500 days at the Nationwide Childrens Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.
