A new technology -- developed locally in the Motor City -- is a finalist for the World Sailing 11th Hour Racing Sustainability Award. ST. CLAIR COUNTY, Mich. – A 30-year-old man has died after the jet ski he was operating collided with a boat on Lake St. Clair on Saturday afternoon. Police say the crash occurred at about 7 p.m. near the mouth of Big Muscamoot Bay. Officials say the operator of the boat initially fled the scene but was later located near Metro Beach. The boat operator did not sustain any injuries in the crash, police said. The crash occurred in the same area of the lake where the Raft Off event took place Saturday -- a boating event that attracts large crowds of people each year.

It was Raft Off 2020, an event held by the same group that hosts Jobbie Nooner -- another large boating event that was held normally this year despite an increase in coronavirus cases at the time. As of Aug. 8, St. Clair County has 684 confirmed coronavirus cases and Macomb County has 9,976.

CHESTERFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. First responders jumped into Lake St. Clair to save a teenager who crashed into the water after leading officers on a chase Sunday night. Waves were about 1-2 feet high when the teen launched over the seawall and into the lake in his parents SUV. A Chesterfield Township officer went into the water to rescue what police called a suicidal 16-year-old as the GMC Terrain sank. The driver accelerated, launched into Lake St. Clair, said Chesterfield Township Police Chief Bradley Kersten. Firefighters wearing emergency water rescue gear had to smash the vehicles window to get the teen out.

Thousands of boats lined up on Lake St. Clair for this years Jobbie Nooner event, but the sunny weather and clear skies quickly disappeared. A vicious storm rolled through and wreaked havoc, and as many as 20 people were taken to the hospital, according to the Coast Guard. Rob McLean was in the middle of it all with his wife and stepdaughter, Katie Pfeiffer, who started recording the storm. There was a couple of people that had gouges in their hands from trying to stop boats, Pfeiffer said. If I see a storm coming, Im getting the heck out of there, Straetmans said.

GROSSE POINTE FARMS, Mich. – Authorities said dental records were used to help them determine that the body found in the Detroit River on Saturday morning is that of missing Grosse Pointe Woods woman, JoAnn Matouk Romain. Two fishermen on the west side of Boblo Island found the body partially submerged in the water and notified Canadian authorities. Police said Romain’s car was found parked in the lot of St. Paul’s Church on Lake Shore Drive in Grosse Pointe Farms, along with her purse and more than $1,000. “But it opens up an entire whole end of investigation.”The family has hired a retired FBI agent to look into the death further.
