Ann Arbor spending over $188K to combat diarrhea-causing parasite at city pools
ANN ARBOR, MI — Ann Arbor is making some big investments at city pools to combat a diarrhea-causing parasite. Scott Spooner, Ann Arbor parks maintenance manager, noted the city added a UV disinfection system at Mack Pool in 2019. “The Ann Arbor community shortly thereafter experienced a cryptosporidium outbreak that shut most pools for an extended period of time,” he wrote in a memo to council. The new UV systems at the city’s outdoor pools will be secondary to existing chlorine disinfection systems and should provide multiple benefits, including reduced chlorine demand and improved disinfection, Spooner said.
