While many people consider the end of summer to be Labor Day weekend, the season doesn’t officially end until the Autumnal Equinox, which is today, Sept. 22. In Grand Rapids, there is 2 minutes and 53 seconds less daylight each day for the next couple of weeks. The days will continue to get shorter until the Winter Solstice, Dec. 21, which is the shortest day of the year and the first day of winter. On that day, the overhead point of the sun reaches its southernmost point, and then begins to move north again – and we begin to see more daylight each day. Daylight hours continue to get longer until the Summer Solstice, June 21, which is the longest day of the year.

HARPER WOODS, MI – A 19-year-old man is accused of fatally shooting his mother and her boyfriend at a Harper Woods home over Labor Day weekend, officials said. Demond Thomas Burgen Jr., 19, of Harper Woods, is charged with murder related to the deaths of his mother, Khalilah Elam, 45, of Harper Woods, and her boyfriend Reginald Farmer Jr., 52, of Ypsilanti, the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office announced. Police officers responded to the scene and set up a perimeter around the house, the release said. Farmer was pronounced dead at the scene. The probable cause conference is set for 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 14, and the preliminary examination is set for 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 21.

WEXFORD COUNTY, MI -- An elderly couple suffered significant injuries over the Labor Day weekend the vehicle they were in hit a tree near Cadillac, police said. At about 2:43 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3, a trooper from the Michigan State Police Cadillac Post was monitoring traffic on M-115 when he witnessed a vehicle crash. The crash, which was recorded by the trooper’s in-car camera, took place on westbound M-115 near 48 Road in Clam Lake Township, police said. Troopers were assisted by the MSP Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit, MMR, Buena Vista Fire Department, the Saginaw County Sheriff’s Office, and MDOT.

The city’s splashpads are free to use and will be open during their regular hours, which are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. In addition to all Grand Rapids Public Library locations being closed Monday, the library system’s Madison Square, Ottawa Hills, Van Belkum and West Side branch locations will be closed Saturday as well. The site is normally open from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday throughout the year and open to Grand Rapids residents only, requiring residents to bring an ID for proof of residence.
