The Red Wings and Hurricanes are both competing in the realigned Central Division with Columbus, Dallas, Chicago, Florida, Nashville and Tampa. Little Caesars Arena will not have fans. Insider Pierre LeBrun reports the season will start Jan. 13 (as expected) with a trade deadline scheduled for April 12. The NHL’s regular season -- expected to be cut short to just 56 games -- will end May 8. Teams will play within their divisions with the top four in each division making the playoffs. NHL, players reach tentative deal for 56-game season
The National Hockey League and players reached a tentative deal Friday, Dec. 18, 2020, to hold a 56-game season in 2021, pending the approval of each side's executive board and Canadian health officials. The NHL and players reached a tentative deal Friday to hold a 56-game season that would begin Jan. 13. Players on the NHLPA’s executive board call Friday night supported moving forward with the agreed upon terms, according to a person with knowledge of the meeting. Approval from health officials in the five Canadian provinces that have teams is still needed before the NHL can go ahead with the season. The NHL, like the NBA, finished its previous season in a quarantined bubble — two of them, one each in Toronto and Edmonton, Alberta.
Reports: NHL, NHLPA discuss 56-game regular season with mid-January start date
The NHL and NHLPA are looking at the possibility of starting a 56-game regular season in mid-January 2021, according to TSN’s Frank Seravalli. Development: Sources say #NHL shared draft schedules with #NHLPA on Thursday, one including a 56-game regular season for 2021. Drafts were based on Jan. 1 start date, but sides discussed pushing that back (Jan. 15 or 16?). A Jan. 15 start is now being discussed, source says, really no choice given that Jan 1 doesn’t seem realistic at this point. If this new pandemic-shortened season really is going to start in mid-January, the NHL and NHLPA need to finalize something very soon.
Big Ten football returns this weekend
Big Ten football is back with both the Spartans and Wolverines taking the field. Big Ten football officially kicked off tonight with Illinois and Wisconsin. All teams will play eight games in eight weeks with a conference championship on Dec. 19. Both Michigan and Michigan State University coaches say they’re ready. Then Michigan will kick things off at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow.

NHL targeting Jan. 1 to begin next season
Commissioner Gary Bettman said Tuesday night the NHL is targeting a Jan. 1 start for next season. That declaration came after recent talks between the league and NHL Players’ Association. NHL teams are expected to get camps of at least two weeks, just as they did before the expanded playoffs over the summer. Free agency opens Friday, with the NHL looking to speed through the offseason while planning to play in 2021. “It’s kind of been refreshing to get back and have somewhat of a tentative date for when we’re going to be coming back,” Washington Capitals defenseman Brenden Dillon said.
Bettman: Next NHL season could start in December or January
EDMONTON, AB – Gary Bettman will take his first sigh of relief in months when he presents the Stanley Cup. Bettman and deputy commissioner Bill Daly had more questions of their own than answers next season, though it's always been questionable if it will start on Dec. 1 as tentatively planned. “If there’s an option to consider, believe me, we’re considering it,” Bettman said during his annual pre- Stanley Cup Final news conference. “Our goal is to get back to as great a sense of normalcy as possible under whatever circumstances are presented,” Bettman said. Before the Dallas Stars and Tampa Bay Lightning opened the final, Bettman acknowledged he's not taking a victory lap yet.

‘A step toward normalcy’ - NHL shapes a return to play plan

NHL plans move to small-group training as Phase 2 of return
TORONTO, ONT The NHL hopes to have players back in team facilities soon -- with plenty of precautions. It has not yet been determined when precisely Phase 2 will start or how long it may last, the said read. Teams are not allowed to require a player to return to a club's home city to complete any necessary quarantine measures before the workouts begin. The NHL/NHLPA Return to Play Committee has been hashing out details of what the game will look like if it's allowed to return this summer. Most NHL players have not been on the ice since the league halted its schedule, although some, including a number of Swedish players who returned home, have been skating in recent weeks.
NHL suspends season amid coronavirus outbreak
The National Hockey League (NHL) has suspended the remainder of its 2019-20 season amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. According to reports, the NHL hopes to resume the season at some point. The Detroit Red Wings were scheduled to play Thursday night in D.C. against the Washington Capitals. Regular season NHL games were scheduled through April 4, with the Stanley Cup playoffs scheduled right after that. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said in a statement that the league would like to continue the season when it is “appropriate and prudent.”The NBA announced its decision to suspend the season on Wednesday night after one of its players tested positive for COVID-19.
