Ann Arbor Police Department seeks applicants for police chaplains program
ANN ARBOR, Mich. โ Those looking to help the community through faith can now volunteer as a police chaplain with the Ann Arbor Police Department. Chaplains will ride along with AAPD officers during patrol shifts to offer support to both community members and officers. That support includes giving advice or referrals, providing comfort during death notifications, offering prayer at ceremonies or special events and attending community events with AAPD personnel. These could range from counseling individuals contemplating suicide or assisting those with a loved one who has killed themselves, answering religious/spiritual questions, and providing encouragement for AAPD personnel and families. Washtenaw County community furnishes over 25 apartments for those exiting homelessness
Itโs hard to furnish just one apartment but groups from around Ann Arbor and Washtenaw County have furnished over 25 in Avalon Housingโs new Hickory Way Apartments. By the end of the first phase of Hickory Way move-ins, community members will have filled 34 units. An additional 36 units will be available for Avalon Housing clients sometime in the summer, seven of which still need sponsors. Army takes Liberty Bowl spot left by Tennessee's withdrawal
When that bowl game was called off because there was not another team available, it suddenly left Army looking for a postseason opponent. A spot in the Liberty Bowl became available Monday when Tennessee became the first team to back out since bowl berths were announced. The change to its Liberty Bowl opponent was no problem for West Virginia (5-4). โOur team deserves to be in a bowl and so does the 9-2 Army squad,โ West Virginia athletic director Shane Lyons said. Frankly, I think we were stunned to find out the opportunity would be in a bowl like the AutoZone Liberty Bowl.
Union volunteers build new observation deck in Ann Arbor
ANN ARBOR, Mich. โ Volunteers from the Union Sportsmenโs Alliance have constructed a new observational deck on the Washtenaw Community College campus. A 16-foot bench attached to the deck allows users to stop and watch for wildlife. โThis project at WCC is one of perseverance,โ said USA Director of Union Relations Walt Ingram in a release. The deck was assembled as a Union Sportsmenโs Alliance Work Boots in the Ground conservation project. โGetting people in the mechanical trades together to build something for WCCโs biology students and community members to use was an awesome experience,โ said UA Local 190 Training Director Andy Fielder, who led the project.
White House seeks volunteers for the upcoming holiday season
WASHINGTON, D.C. โ President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump are seeking volunteers to make holiday magic happen at the White House this holiday season. Coronavirus concerns are cutting the list of volunteers to allow for social distancing. Volunteers are expected to wear masks. Volunteers canvas Michigan neighborhoods to get people to fill out 2020 Census
The clock is ticking on an effort to make sure everyone in Michigan is counted in the 2020 Census. Volunteers from different groups were out Saturday, hoping normally undercounted neighborhoods were heard and can get the services they need. The White House announced Monday its ending the Census a month early, despite the recommendation of the U.S. Census Bureau. Jewish Family Services of Washtenaw County seeks volunteers for food deliveries
ANN ARBOR, Mich. Jewish Family Services of Washtenaw County is looking for community members to volunteer for weekly food deliveries to clients. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the organization has asked volunteers to take food from its JFS Specialty Food Pantry to clients in need. The food pantry provides non-perishable foods, fresh produce, and a variety of specialty foods for those with medical conditions or dietary restrictions. Volunteers will help deliver prepared meals to 200 households and groceries to 600 households. For the deliveries, volunteers need to use their own vehicles and call clients once the food has been dropped off.

Volunteers help Hope Clinic provide additional groceries, services to community members
YPSILANTI, Mich. โ During a time of increased need, volunteers and Washtenaw County organizations have stepped up to help Hope Clinic offer more groceries and services to community members. In the past month, there has been an increased demand for the services offered by Hope Clinic. Half of the households using the clinicโs medical, dental and food assistance services are new and demand for grocery assistance has tripled. But hope is never cancelled, and neither is Hope Clinic. GameAbove, an alumni group at Eastern Michigan University, raised over $50,000 for Hope Clinic.
