IONIA COUNTY, MI – A motorist who ran from the scene of a crash, only to be tracked by down by a police K-9 team, was actually thankful upon his arrest. The reason: Tracking dog Titan didn’t bite him. The incident began around 6:05 a.m. Friday, Jan. 27, in Lowell, when the driver involved in a crash fled the scene on foot. Ionia Department of Public Safety Officer Jennifer Skorta and her tracking dog responded to the scene and began a track at Elm Street and Riverside Drive near the Flat River. “The suspect was taken into custody without incident, thanking Officer Skorka for not allowing Titan to bite him,” Ionia DPS said in a Facebook post.

DETROIT – U.S. Border Patrol seized almost 2.5 pounds of fentanyl at a cargo shipping facility in Detroit. Agents contacted a K-9 unit from Detroit after identifying the suspicious package at the Gibraltar Station on Sept. 23. The 2.5 pounds of fentanyl is enough to be a fatal dose to nearly 500,000 people, agents said. Detroit Sector agents do all they can to stop this poison from entering our communities,” said U.S. Border Patrol Detroit Sector Chief Patrol Agent Robert Danley. The seized fentanyl was turned over to the local office of the Drug Enforcement Administration for investigation.

At a Monday, July 25, meeting, the Saginaw City Council will vote on establishing an agreement with Saginaw Community Foundation, setting up the nonprofit to handle a special fundraising account where donors can send money to support the care and training needs of the K-9 unit’s dogs, city records indicate. Earlier this month, the Saginaw Valley Police Canine Association provided a statement to the council announcing the association would cut ties with the program after years of supporting the K-9 initiative financially. The department handles five dogs in its police K-9 unit: Ares, Cigan, Harvey, Denver and Krixus. The council will meet at 6:30 p.m. July 25 at Saginaw City Hall, 1315 S. Washington.

The K-9 dog, Atos, who served with the Grand Rapids Police Department for eight years, retired last week, Grand Rapids police officials announced Wednesday. “If you’ve seen one of our K-9s at a neighborhood or school event, it was most likely Atos,” Dionne said. Upon retiring, ownership of Atos was transferred from Grand Rapids to Dionne’s family, with whom he’ll spend his retirement. Funding for Rip came from the Grand Rapids Police Foundation, which has a fund dedicated to supporting K-9s and their training.

UNION TWP, MI — A man is in custody after allegedly robbing a liquor store just outside Mount Pleasant, then leaving tracks to his nearby apartment. About 12:35 a.m. on Sunday, March 13, Isabella County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a reported armed robbery at Old Mission Wine Cellar, 5030 S. Mission Road in Union Township. The store’s clerk told deputies a man had brandished a gun and demanded cash. Law enforcement then followed a track to a nearby apartment, with tracks leading to its rear, said Sheriff Mike Main. The suspect and another man were trying to leave the apartment when police arrived.

MSP Trooper charged with assault in handling of police dog
LANSING, Mich. – Disturbing video of an arrest near Lansing has led to criminal charges against a state trooper over how he handled his police dog. Parker Surbrook joined the Michigan State Police in 2012 and worked his way up to becoming a K-9 handler. The dashcam footage shows Surbook’s K-9 was on the suspect for more than 3 and a half minutes while the man pleaded for the trooper to pull the dog off. AdThe driver pleads for Surbrook to remove the dog and said his leg is broken. After reviewing the video, Surbrook was charged with one count of felonious assault.

TROY, Mich. – Troy police praised K-9 Bruiser for locating missing people. Police said the dog found two different endangered missing people in the past two weeks. A missing person is considered endangered if they are in immediate danger due to health or other circumstances.
Man facing charges on suspicion of shooting gun in Wayne
WAYNE, Mich. - A man is facing charges after Wayne police were called Monday about someone shooting a gun. Police said Patrick Walsh Jr., 33, was shooting a gun in the 35000 block of Brush Street then fled the scene on foot. A Westland police K-9 helped track down Walsh at a nearby home, police said. During a search of the home, police said they found the handgun Walsh had fired. Walsh is charged with three counts of felonious assault and three counts of felony firearm.
Police investigating Fifth Third Bank robbery in Chesterfield Township
CHESTERFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. - Police are investigating after a Fifth Third Bank in Chesterfield Township was robbed Wednesday at 2:35 p.m.Police said the robber fled the bank on foot with an unknown amount of cash. The Chesterfield Township Police Department used a K-9 unit to search the area for the suspect, but was not successful. The police department's detective bureau and the FBI are investigating this robbery and a previous bank robbery that occurred in Chesterfield Township at a Citizens Bank on Oct. 2. Caught on video: Police K-9 attacked by pit bull
CNNANAHEIM, California (CNN) - An Anaheim police K-9 was attacked by a pit bull Wednesday while taking part in a search for a stabbing suspect, KCAL reported. Daron Wyatt, the incident began just before noon as officers were searching for a stabbing suspect. He eventually came out, but so did a large pit bull, which charged the K-9, prompting an officer to use a Taser gun on the pit bull in order to subdue it. The pit bull was turned over to Orange County Animal Care. The man taken into custody is not believed to be connected to the stabbing, Wyatt said.
Royal Oak police K-9 retires after 7 years with department
ROYAL OAK, Mich. - Ryker, a Royal Oak police K-9, is retiring after spending seven years with the department. The dog started with his handler, Officer Richard Chipman, in 2012. The dog will be replaced by Conan, a 1 1/2-year-old Belgian Malinois and German shepherd mix that was raised in Hungary Conan will work with Officer Kevin Cavanagh after the pair attend the Patrol Dog Academy. DETROIT - Michigan State Police troopers apprehended a suspected car thief Thursday. According to authorities, no one was injured and there was no damage done to any property. Wayne State officer killed remembered at Lions game
DETROIT – A Wayne State University police officer who died after being shot was honored at the Detroit Lions game Thursday. Officer Collin Rose and his K-9 partner, Wolverine, were a member of the Ford Field Explosives Detection Team, Local 4 News has learned. The Lions paid a tribute to Rose before Thursday's game.
