Starbucks closes Michigan location due to safety concerns
DETROIT – Starbucks has released its reasoning for closing a store in Midtown Detroit. A spokesperson for the Seattle-based coffee giant told WXYZ-TV in Detroit that the location at 3760 Woodward was closed this week due to safety concerns. Starbucks believes the company can no longer “ensure the safety” of their employees at that location, according to the spokesperson. The location officially closed on Feb. 13. Founded in 1971, Starbucks has 35,000 stores worldwide, including numerous other locations in Metro Detroit.

Jon Carlson, one of 3Mission’s principals, wanted to start an apprenticeship program to increase diversity in the brewing industry, Emal said. Those beers are complicated from a fermentation standpoint, so it showed off how advanced the students can be in the EMU program, Emal said.

Detroit’s Midtown neighborhood gained a new Secretary of State office on Thursday. Located at 580 E. Warren Ave., Detroiters will have access to typical offerings like license and registration services, as well as a self-service station that can print tabs, registrations and temporary licenses and IDs 24/7. “This new office increases our ability to provide in-person service in Detroit, where past office closures forced city residents to wait in line for hours on end,” Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson said in the announcement. “My office hears regularly from our residents about wanting closer connection to government.”The new Midtown Detroit location, like all Secretary of State offices, offers both scheduled and walk-up service. More than 80% of visitors who walk up are served immediately, Benson’s office says, and the remaining customers can wait or schedule a return visit.

DETROIT -- A massive fire broke out early Friday morning at the popular Traffic Jam & Snug in Midtown Detroit, and officials say the building is a total loss. According to Fox 2 Detroit, firefighters battled the blaze for several hours before clearing the scene around 6 a.m. Although the restaurant is going to need to be rebuilt, the fire does not appear to have damaged the nearby Shinola store and Third Man Records, according to WDIV-Detroit. The eatery was known for its menu full of homemade breads, cheeses, pies, cookies and more. According to the Traffic Jam & Snug website, the brewpub was Michigan’s first of its kind when it launched in December 1992.

DETROIT – A new development project is underway in Detroit’s Midtown neighborhood that will offer over 200 apartments and ground-floor retail space. Construction of Woodward West, a $60 million mixed-use development project, broke ground on Nov. 9 on Woodward Avenue at Stimson Street. Slated to open in the summer of 2022, the five-story structure plans to offer 204 apartments and 25,000 feet of retail space. Officials say the site is meant to be inclusive of the existing neighborhood and its residents: 20% of Woodward West apartments will be offered as affordable housing, while a portion of the retail space will be reserved as “entrepreneur space” for new businesses, officials said Thursday. MDOT Receives $1M Innovation Grant For Second Avenue Bridge Project In Detroit
The Michigan Department of Transportation has been awarded a $1 million Accelerated Innovation Deployment grant by the United States Department of Transportation for the ongoing replacement of the Second Avenue overpass above I-94 in Detroit. Over the next 18 months, the Michigan Department of Transportation will be replacing the bridge that was originally constructed in 1954. The AID grant is legislatively authorized within the Technology and Innovation Deployment Program. Once in place, the bridge deck will be cast and the structure will be finished in place. DETROIT – A 14-year-old boy who ran away after his mother dropped him off at a school in Midtown Detroit has been located and is safe, police said. Isaiah Jones was last seen at 8:22 a.m. Monday when his mother dropped him off at school in the 100 block of Selden Street, according to officials. He is now back home with his family, police said. Police believe Isaiah ran away.
Robbers take man's cell phone, keys, hit victim with pistol in Detroit
DETROIT - A man was robbed after getting off the bus in Midtown Detroit by two men wearing ski masks Thursday night at 11:45 p.m., according to the Detroit Police Department. The victim, a 38-year-old man, was approached by the suspects driving a dark sedan while walking eastbound on Brainard Street from Second Avenue. The victim was hit with the pistol multiple times, but he refused medical treatment. The first suspect is described as a heavy-set black male wearing a black ski mask and dark clothing who was armed with a black pistol, according to DPD. The second suspect is described as a 6-foot black man also wearing a ski mask and dark clothing, according to DPD.

The popular Ohio-based taco chain restaurant will be located in the Detroit Creamery building at 634 Selden St. right between Second and Third avenues. While the scantron-like menus make it easy for diners to be as selective as they want about their choice of toppings, Condado offers a menu of suggested tacos as well. Condado Tacos serves a number of specialty drinks, including its extensive margarita menu. This will be Condados Tacos 16th location since its first opening in Columbus, Ohio, in 2014.
