Wayne State University loses accreditation for neurosurgery training at Detroit Medical Center
DETROIT The future of the neurosurgery program between Wayne State University and the Detroit Medical Center seems to be over following the loss of the programs accreditation. Both the DMC and the WSU are downplaying the loss of accreditation for the neurosurgery training program between the two. The DMC acknowledged the center was disappointed to learn the accreditation council for graduate medical education pulled certification -- effective in June -- but it pointed out it was granted institutional accreditation for its general medicine education program. The neurosurgery residency program at the Detroit Medical Center belongs solely to the DMC, reads a statement from WSU. The Wayne State name is listed on the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education website because of a prior teaching affiliation agreement.

What can be done about sports concussions in young athletes?
It's an issue that's becoming more of a topic for parents of young athletes each year. Statistics regarding concussions, provided by the Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine Division at Detroit Medical Center, definitely validate the increasing concerns parents have. Coaches instructing players on proper techniques in contact sports is another way concussions can be limited. Players should only be allowed to return to their sport when a medical professional determines that they have completely recovered from their concussions. If a player keeps playing the game with a concussion, risk of brain hemorrhage, swelling and other long-term problems increases.
