Grosse Ile in state soccer finals for 4th straight year after 2-0 win over Flint Powers

Heck, some people might argue the Red Devils are already there after reaching the Division 3 state championship game for the fourth straight year. Grosse Ile will be playing for its third consecutive state championship after beating Flint Powers Catholic 2-0 Wednesday in a semifinal game at Parker Middle School in Howell. “It’s not going to be four state championships (in a row) unfortunately because we lost the one when these guys were freshmen three years ago,” said Grosse Ile coach Jonathan Evans. It’s maybe surreal right now.”Grosse Ile was the clear favorite entering the game as the Red Devils were ranked No. Grosse Ile had at least seven prime scoring chances in the first half yet couldn’t get on the scoreboard before the intermission.

Powers Catholic boys advance to state soccer semifinals for first time since 2017

FLINT – Powers Catholic is headed back to the state soccer semifinals. The win moved Powers (13-9-2) into the semifinal at Howell’s Parker Middle School against Grosse Ile at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3. Grosse Ile is 18-1-1 and was No. The Chargers are in the final round of the tournament for the first time since 2017, when they beat Williamston 4-2 to win their third state championship. Freighter aground on Detroit River now freed

DETROIT – A freighter that ran aground on the Detroit River has been freed Thursday. The U.S. Coast Guard tweeted that the the Harvest Spirit has been refloated and will undergo further inspection. The 500-foot freighter Harvest Spirit, aground in the Detroit River since Wednesday morning, was successfully refloated this afternoon and is safely anchored in U.S. waters while awaiting a thorough inspection. Driver rescued after vehicle submerged in Detroit River near Grosse Ile Yacht Club

GROSSE ILE, Mich. – Grosse Ile police pulled a driver and vehicle from the Detroit River following a crash. The incident happened Friday night on East River Road near the Grosse Ile Yacht Club. He pointed officers to the river where they found the driver and vehicle. Police said the driver was going too fast to make a turn. That’s a steep curve so I know it can mislead people sometimes, but never anything like this where people have driven into the water.

'Severe erosion’ to keep Grosse Ile Parkway Bridge closed until fall 2021, maybe later

GROSSE ILE, Mich. – The Grosse Ile Parkway Bridge over the Trenton Channel will remain closed at least until the fall of 2021, officials said Friday. Last week, a routine underwater inspection of the piers supporting the bridge revealed “severe erosion” that “must be repaired before the bridge can be reopened," according to a Wayne County official. A timeline for the repairs is currently being developed, but officials said Friday that the bridge is expected to remain closed until fall 2021, “if not longer.”The bridge originally closed for repairs in May, and was expected to reopen in December of this year. The bridge, also known as “free bridge," closed last year in November for emergency repairs to address structural integrity issues, which caused massive backups and delays for frustrated residents. The May 2020 closure was meant to provide more permanent repairs, which the township says are needed to increase the life expectancy of the 90-year-old bridge and to also lift its current weight restrictions.

US, Canadian authorities search Detroit River for missing people after boat capsizes

GROSSE ILE, Mich. Emergency personnel are searching the Detroit River, just south of Stony Island, after a boat capsized Sunday night. According to authorities, the incident happened at about 7:30 p.m. Police said a boater from Ontario witnessed the incident and was able to province assistance to most of the passengers, but two adults have gone missing. Police said at least nine people were onboard, consisting of adults and children. The search included Grosse Ile Police and Fire crews, the Wayne County Marine Division, Canadian Coast Guard, U.S. Coast Guard and the Downriver Dive Team. The status of the victims and their names have not been released by authorities.

Priest, another man presumed dead in Detroit River

GROSSE ILE, Mich. Authorities searched for a priest and another man who were presumed dead after a boat capsized in the Detroit River, police said Monday. The incident occurred Sunday near Grosse Ile, a suburban island between Michigan and Ontario, Canada. It's very unusual for a 39-foot boat to capsize, Grosse Ile police Lt. Kenneth Pelland said. Rooney, 66, a native of Ireland, was pastor at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Trenton, his latest assignment during more than 30 years as a priest. Horrible for the community, Pelland said.

About two dozen people protested outside Trenton City Hall Sunday afternoon voicing their concerns against what they said is a decision that will harm the future of Trenton. Update: 57-year-old man killed in Grosse Ile plane crash

GROSSE ILE, Mich. – Police have provided new details following the death of a man after a plane crashed on Grosse Ile Saturday. Officials say at around 4:47 p.m. an airplane crashed in a residential neighborhood in the 27000 block of Loma Circle. Police say the pilot, 57-year-old Jeffrey Dean Oliver of Lincoln Park, was ejected from the plane. Officials are investigating whether his death was caused by injuries sustained during the crash or a medical condition that may have occurred during the flight. Officials described the plane as a “Golden Circle Air T-Bird Tandem TBT-06 with fixed wings that falls within the experimental airworthiness class.”The FAA and NTSB are investigating.

Body of missing Grosse Ile man found by fisherman near Celeron Island

GROSSE ILE, Mich. The body of a missing Grosse Ile man was discovered by a fisherman on Saturday afternoon. Grosse Ile Police and Fire responded to the incident at 1 p.m. and recovered the body near Celeron Island in the Detroit River. A medical examiner confirmed the missing Grosse Ile mans identity as 24-year-old Arsim Zendeli, police said. Zendelis family reported him as missing on April 7. Police say his vehicle and clothing was previously recovered but the man was not found after extensive searching by law enforcement and a search and rescue team.

Drunken 71-year-old man clocked driving 104 mph in a 30 mph zone in Wyandotte

WYANDOTTE, Mich. – Wyandotte police clocked a man driving 104 mph in a 30 mph zone April 13. An officer stopped the man on on Biddle Avenue, near Plum Street, around 8 p.m.Police said the officer smelled alcohol coming from the 71-year-old Grosse Ile man’s vehicle. The man told the officer he had two drinks. The man failed field sobriety tests and was arrested. The man blew .12 and .13 on a breathalyzer test during booking, police said.

Grosse Ile Parkway Bridge to close this summer for repairs

GROSSE ILE TOWNSHIP, Mich. – The Grosse Ile Parkway Bridge, officially called the Wayne County Bridge, over the Trenton Channel is scheduled to close on or after May 1 for repairs. Once it is closed, the bridge may not reopen until October 2020, according to Grosse Ile Township officials. At the time, the county said the Grosse Ile Parkway Bridge will have to undergo extensive rehabilitation work during the 2020 construction season. The design for Phase II has been completed and rehabilitation work is being bid out. The Grosse Ile Toll Bridge remains open at the north end of the island.

GROSSE ILE, Mich. – Progress is being made in Grosse Ile where construction crews are working around the clock on a bridge that was closed by Wayne County. Crews started to repair the bridge on Grosse Ile using heavy duty equipment. Beverly Watts, director of the Wayne County Department of Public Services said she had no choice. The closure forced people living on Grosse Ile to use the toll bridge as the only way to enter and exit the area. WAYNE COUNTY, Mich. Drivers have been lined up for miles outside the Grosse Ile toll bridge because the other bridge has been shut down since Wednesday for maintenance and repairs. I work 10 hours a day and then I drive three hours home.The heavy traffic stretched for miles Friday night. A recent inspection on the main Grosse Ile bridge showed it needs major repairs. Wayne County was proactive. Watts said officials expect an updated inspection of the bridge that will let them know how to move forward with construction.
