ANN ARBOR, MI - The University of Michigan will keep its indoor mask mandate even for fully vaccinated students, faculty and staff in order to cope with rising COVID-19 infections. UM remains resolute in its vaccine mandate, Schlissel said, as the university’s goal is to make most of its activities in person. “Our focus right now is on getting students vaccinated,” UM spokesman Rick Fitzgerald said on Aug. 2. Exemption requests are being reviewed by staff members in the University Health Service, Student Life, Human Resources and Occupational Health Services departments. ANN ARBOR – The University of Michigan will stick to a virtual graduation ceremony but allow graduates to at least watch the event on screens inside the football stadium, officials said. The university has been criticized by some parents and students for not having a traditional graduation in the stadium as COVID-19 vaccines become widely available and restrictions on large gatherings are eased. The football stadium now can be opened at 20% capacity, a reason that was given Thursday for opening it to graduates on May 1. The commencement speakers will be elsewhere but visible on screens at the Big House. It’s the second year that a traditional graduation has been canceled at U-M because of the coronavirus.
University of Michigan OKs ‘net zero’ carbon emission plan
(AP Photo/Charlie Riedel, File)TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. – The University of Michigan announced a plan Thursday to achieve “net zero” carbon footprint status for its $12.5 billion endowment by 2050 through measures including shifting away from investment in fossil fuels and toward renewable energy. It calls for $140 million worth of new investments in solar and wind developments and projects to limit carbon emissions. Numerous governments, businesses and universities have committed to net zero carbon footprints in the push to reduce emissions of gases that trap heat in the atmosphere, contributing to global warming. “Net zero” generally means offsetting emissions of greenhouse gases with reductions elsewhere. Under the University of Michigan plan, endowment holdings in assets with carbon output would be balanced with investments in carbon reductions by 2050.
University of Michigan’s carbon neutrality commission releases ‘bold, visionary plan’
“Through implementation of the carbon neutrality plan, U-M will provide a model for taking early action to avoid the most adverse impacts of climate change. An institution can achieve carbon neutrality by offsetting the emissions it creates with emissions it removes. Establish, by 2025, carbon neutrality goal dates for Scope 3 emissions categories that are set for no later than 2040. Ad“I applaud the President’s Commission on Carbon Neutrality for leveraging the strengths of our university and broader community to bring forward a comprehensive report. “Our community comprises more than 100,000 students, staff and faculty, and our path toward carbon neutrality requires that they all feel empowered, represented and responsible.
