Detroit police: Man falls asleep driving, strikes police cruiser
DETROIT – A collision on Detroit’s east side sent two police officers to the hospital Saturday night. According to authorities, a man was driving northbound on Gratiot Avenue near Van Dyke when his vehicle struck a Detroit Police Department cruiser that was in the turn lane, before hitting the side of a building. Police said they believe the driver fell asleep while driving home from work. The two police officers that were in the cruiser checked on the driver before being taken to the hospital. DETROIT – A fire at a group home on Detroit’s east side killed one man and injured four others Friday morning. It happened on Burns Avenue, near I-94 and Van Dyke Avenue. The group home was significantly damaged and the building might be a total loss. The other four men were rushed to a hospital to be treated for burns and smoke inhalation. DETROIT – A stretch of I-94 was closed down Sunday night due to an investigation into a shooting on the freeway. According to authorities, the victim was driving eastbound on I-94 between Woodward Avenue and I-75 at about 6:45 p.m. when another vehicle performed a brake check before firing shots. Police said the suspect vehicle exited at Van Dyke. Eastbound I-94 between the Lodge Freeway and Woodward Avenue was closed as officers investigated. On Monday morning, state police said the suspect vehicle was found and individuals were taken into custody.
12-year-old girl, father killed in crash with commercial truck, another child injured
SHELBY TOWNSHIP, MI -- A 12-year-old girl and her father were killed after the Dodge truck they were traveling in was in an accident with a commercial truck at the intersection of Van Dyke and 21 Mile Road. According to Fox 2 Detroit, an early investigation found the 45-year-old father was driving the truck northbound on Van Dyke when he turned left in front of the commercial truck that was traveling southbound on Van Dyke. Another 12-year-old who was in the Dodge truck was also injured in the accident and suffered serious injuries in the crash. The driver of the commercial truck was interviewed by detectives at the scene and released as the investigation is ongoing. DETROIT – Police are investigating a road rage incident on Detroit’s east side Friday that put a 50-year-old man in the hospital with critical injuries. Police said an argument between a 50-year-old man and a 31-year-old man escalated into gunfire being exchanged between the two. Crash on M-53 in Lapeer County kills 29-year-old woman
IMLAY TWP, MI — A traffic crash has killed one person in Lapeer County. About 8:17 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 15, Lapeer County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the crash scene on Van Dyke (M-53) south of Bowers Road in Imlay Township. About a quarter of a mile to the south of Bowers Road, Griffith’s vehicle crossed the centerline and partially entered the northbound lane, police said. An off-duty Lapeer County EMS paramedic at the collision managed to free an unresponsive Griffith and start CPR on her. Lapeer County Sheriff’s deputies were assisted at the scene by Imlay City Fire and Rescue, Michigan State Police troopers from the Lapeer Post, Lapeer County EMS Ambulance Service, Lapeer County Road Commission, Lapeer County Sheriff’s Reconstruction Division, Yakes Towing in North Branch, and Paul’s Collision in Almont.

UTICA, Mich. Two teenagers and a grandmother were rushed to nearby hospitals after a freak incident in Utica involving a woodworking art project and microwave parts. Utica police said the incident happened on the Fourth of July outside an apartment building near 21 Mile Road and Van Dyke Avenue. Utica police Chief Sean Coady said an 18-year-old man has extensive electrical burns to his lungs and is in a medically induced coma. In the Utica case, a father, his son and the sons girlfriend were using a transformer taken out of a microwave. His grandmother also ran over to help and was shocked, officials said.

A witness stopped to render aid and called police. Police said the victim had been shot multiple times and was rushed to a hospital with serious injuries. It is unknown when I-94 will reopen.

$22M multi-building development near West Village clears last financing hurdle
A multi-building development near West Village led by the owner of the Leland Hotel has just gotten the last piece of financing necessary to move forward. At Jefferson and Van Dyke avenues, developer Michael Higgins has plans for a mix of new and redeveloped buildings that would include 42 apartments, 17,000 square feet of commercial space, and a parking deck. Last week, the Michigan Strategic Fund approved two loans for the $22 million project through the Michigan Community Revitalization Program and in Brownfield Tax financing worth $4.9 million. Higgins told Crains Detroit Business that half the units would be reserved for those making between 50 to 80 percent of the Area Median Income ($30,550 to $48,880). Complicating the project, toxic materials from underground gasoline storage tanks were found on the site in 2019, necessitating brownfield financing for cleanup.

Drivers seriously hurt when whiteout conditions cause head-on crash in Lapeer County
BROWN CITY, Mich. – Two men were seriously injured Wednesday in a head-on crash when wind blew snow from an open farm field into the roadway in Lapeer County, police said. The incident happened at 1:27 p.m. Wednesday on Van Dyke north of North Branch Road in Brown City, police said. A 30-year-old Lapeer man was driving north on Van Dyke in a 1995 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck when wind blew the snow across the roadway, according to authorities. Brown City firefighters got both drivers out of the vehicles and took them to McLaren Hospital in Lapeer. Funeral arrangements are set for Victoria Cartright, the Dakota High School student tragically killed walking to school Friday. Cartright was hit by a car and killed by a fellow student while walking to school. She was honored Friday night during Dakota's high school football game. The Dakota High School community continues to mourn the tragic loss of their own. Outside the high school Saturday, fellow students, teachers and parents paused to remember Cartwright.
