Democrat Jeff Pepper to face Republican Ginger Shearer in May 3 special election for State House District 15
A special general election on May 3 will decide who sits in the State House seat vacated by Dearborn Mayor and former State Rep. Abdullah Hammoud through the end of the year. The race for the 15th House District pits Democrat Jeff Pepper and Republican Ginger Shearer, formerly known as Virginia Polk. After that election, Pepper told The Arab American News that he had received support from local officials in the heavily Democratic-leaning district and beyond. The area that the 15th House District covers is now slated to fall under entirely new district maps, finalized by the bipartisan Michigan Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission (MICRC) in late December. Man killed by police after Michigan mosque fire is identified
DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) — Authorities have released the name of a man who police shot and killed Saturday after officers noticed a fire at a Detroit-area mosque. Dearborn officials said Sunday that Ahmed Taqi, 37, was fatally shot after he exchanged gunfire with Dearborn police officers. Police said officers noticed the fire early Saturday at the Al-Huda Islamic Association in Dearborn before they encountered Taqi, who was armed. Hammoud said that Taqi “fired at the officers again, which prompted return fire that fatally struck him.”It’s unclear what motivated Taqi. But Hammoud said he may have been “experiencing a mental health crisis at the time.”Detroit Police and Michigan State Police are investigating the shooting.mlive.com

Whitmer calls for special election to fill state House seat representing Dearborn
Gretchen Whitmer has requested a special election to fill a vacancy in the Michigan House of Representatives. Whitmer asked Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson to schedule a primary election on March 1 and a general election on May 3 for candidates seeking to replace Hammoud. “Filling these partial terms before districts change will assist election officials in an orderly redistricting process and 2022 election cycle,” Benson said in a statement. Whitmer previously called for special elections to fill three other state House seats that were vacated last year. Mayor-elect Hammoud selects Issa Shahin as next Dearborn Chief of Police

Shahin has served in that department for some 24 years, serving as commander for the last nine. Shahin will be replacing current Chief Ronald Haddad.
