DETROIT – A large fire destroyed an important part of a Detroit neighborhood. Harper Food Center, located near the intersection of Harper Avenue and Newport Street, was completely destroyed in a fire Saturday night. Large flames and heavy smoke poured out of the only full-service grocery store in the community. A neighborhood grocery store is nothing -- reduced to nothing.”AdThe loss of Harper Food Center is hard to underestimate. Detroit has long struggled with access to full-scale grocery store access.

Groceries delivery driver shot, carjacked in Royal Oak

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – A man was shot in his leg when he was robbed while delivering groceries Tuesday night to a home on South Gainsborough Avenue in Royal Oak. Police said two men approached the delivery driver just after 9 p.m. in the 700 block of South Gainsborough Avenue. The victim’s vehicle was a gray 2007 Toyota Camry with Michigan license plate 5MP N71. Royal Oak police detectives are investigating the incident. Anyone with information about this incident should call the Royal Oak Police Department at 248-246-3500.

Boy Scouts to help unload groceries at Ann Arbor food drive on Saturday

ANN ARBOR – Members of the local Boy Scout Troop 27 will be on hand Saturday at the St. Francis Parish Food Drive to help donors move groceries from their cars to the church from 2-6 p.m.Members of the National Eagle Scout Association NESA Alumni of Michigan will also be on site. Scouts will be in uniform at the front of the church for those who need assistance. The St. Francis Parish Food Drive is running now through Sunday. ALDI frozen dessert recalled for undeclared cashew allergen

A vegan frozen dessert has been recalled by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for potentially containing an undisclosed cashew allergen. As of July 31 the FDA has recalled non-dairy frozen desserts by the brand Earth Grown because they may contain an undeclared cashew allergen. Officials say the recalled products will be removed from ALDI stores and the company is conducting a review of their allergen controls. Meijer will require masks to enter any store in Midwest

DETROIT Meijer will begin requiring customers to wear a mask at all stores to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. This new requirement is in addition to the retailers locations where executive orders are already in place requiring people to wear face coverings at retail locations. Customers who have medical conditions that prevent them from wearing face coverings are exempt, Meijer said. Meijer currently operates 253 supercenters and grocery stores throughout Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin, Indiana, Illinois, and Kentucky. Meijer joins Walmart, Target and CVS, among other companies, who are requiring masks in stores.

Westside Farmers Market returns to Ann Arbors west side July 9

ANN ARBOR, Mich. On July 9, the Westside Farmers Market will return to the parking lot of Zingermans Roadhouse for its 15th season. From 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. every Thursday until Oct. 8, community members can stop by the farmers market to pick up locally grown produce and to meet Michigan farmers and vendors. Metro Detroit grocery service offers quick delivery, pickup of fresh produce

LIVONIA, Mich. A new Metro Detroit grocery service is offering to deliver local produce to residents doorsteps the day after its ordered. Produce at grocery stores can sometimes be more than a week old, and its possible many people have already touched it. John Sitko and Brad Berry came up with the idea of Farmstop before people were afraid to go to grocery stores because of the coronavirus (COVID-19). The flavor is there.The Farmstops model became even more relevant after the pandemic hit. Our customers dont have to worry about going into a store, how many people are touching (the food), Sitko said.

Canton Farmers Market 2020 season: Vendors, staff required to wear masks

CANTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. The Canton Farmers Market will be back Sunday, July 12 at Preservation Park (located at 500 N. Ridge Road in Canton Township) while the coronavirus pandemic continues. All vendors and farmers market staff will be required to wear face masks and market-goers are strongly encouraged to don protective face-coverings.Organizers also say the market shopping area will be fenced off with only one entrance and exit, located off of Ridge Road. With current Michigan gathering size limitations in place, market-goers may be asked to cue and wait before accessing the market grounds depending on crowd sizes. The Canton Farmers Market will be open each Sunday from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. through October 25, 2020, and will feature a variety of local produce. Expected items for the first market include: beets, berries, broccoli, apples, cabbage, carrots, cucumber, eggplant and more.

Here are the new store hours, dedicated shopping times for Meijer locations in Michigan

DETROIT – Meijer announced Thursday it is adjusting store hours and dedicated shopping times to help customers get their groceries during the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Pay-at-the-pump gas station locations will stay open 24 hours a day, Meijer announced. Dedicated shopping time for essential service workers and Meijer team members will be held from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. Mondays and Wednesdays. Essential service workers includes all medical workers, first responders and law enforcement officers, according to the company. “These extended hours will best serve all our customers and provide more flexibility to shop Meijer stores,” Meijer President and CEO Rick Keyes said.

Also, freeze fruits and veggies when getting close too ripe. Consider cooking the fruits and veggies before freezing and purée them or freeze them whole.
