Saginaw leaders preach collaboration in developing $100M medical corridor project
SAGINAW, MI — County and city of Saginaw elected leaders said a growing partnership between the two governmental bodies would prove critical to developing a proposed multimillion dollar community health care investment. Using American Rescue Plan Act stimulus dollars provided to both municipalities, city and county leaders, respectively, allocated $5 million in recent months for a proposed $100 million health care project planned in Saginaw’s medical corridor in downtown. When the council voted on it, the $5 million was allocated specifically for a $15 million behavioral health clinic considered part of the larger $100 million project proposed. Saginaw County received $37 million in federal stimulus funds. The back-to-back State of the County and State of the City addresses were part of the programming for the Saginaw County Chamber of Commerce’s February percolator breakfast meeting.

If Reinbold pays restitution in the amount of $24,177, the case will be dismissed, added defense attorney Matthew L. Reyes. Covenant spokeswoman Kristin Knoll previously told MLive Reinbold worked in a non-clinical area for the agency, but could not elaborate further. BUENA VISTA TWP, MI — Hours into 2023, a New Year’s Eve house party in Buena Vista Township culminated in a shooting that left one man wounded. About 3:25 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 1, police responded to a shooting at a residence in the 1600 block of Mack Road in Buena Vista Township. They arrived to find a 33-year-old man suffering form a gunshot wound to his left shoulder, said Buena Vista Township Police Detective Alexis Frierson. Both the victim and the shooter are Buena Vista Township residents, though they did not know each other prior to the gathering, Frierson said. In 2022, Buena Vista Township had two homicides, both of which resulted from gunfire.

Michigan State Police officials on Twitter said the crash occurred around 2:15 p.m. Friday, Dec. 23, at I-75 and Vienna Road. All of northbound I-75 was closed near the 136 mile marker earlier Friday due to a different jackknifed semi. At about 4:30 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 23, a semi tractor-trailer on northbound Interstate 75 north of the 149 mile marker in Saginaw County struck the median and rolled over. In Bay County, several vehicles were involved in a crash on southbound I-75 between the 159 mile marker and 157 mile marker, prompting the closure of that stretch of highway, central dispatch said.

SAGINAW, MI — Accused of starving several pigs to death, a Tittabawassee Township man has pleaded guilty rather than take his chances with a jury. Craig A. Trautner, 63, on Monday, Dec. 19, appeared before Saginaw County Circuit Judge Manvel Trice III and pleaded guilty to two counts of cruelty to one animal causing death. “We found them with no food, no water, no straw, lying in frozen mud and feces on an abandoned farm,” said Animal Control Director Bonnie Kanicki. “He said he had fallen on some hard times and the abandoned farm was quite a distance off the road,” Kanicki said. Bonnie was named after Kanicki and Molly was named after Molly Tamulevich, director of Michigan’s Humane Society of the United States.

SAGINAW, MI — A replacement stage at Ojibway Island and program expansions at four Saginaw community centers will constitute $825,000 of Saginaw County’s $37 million American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) stimulus fund spending. During a Tuesday, Dec. 20, meeting, the Saginaw County Board of Commissioners approved the spending initiatives to benefit community centers First Ward Community Service, Saginaw County Community Action Committee, YMCA of Saginaw, and Youth Development Corp.First Ward Community Center and Saginaw County Community Action Committee received $250,000 apiece to advance their respective programming, YMCA of Saginaw received $150,000, and Youth Development Corp. received $100,000. The board also approved providing $100,000 of county ARPA funds to the City of Saginaw for replacing Ojibway Island’s deteriorating stage, where bands perform during events there. Saginaw County Controller Robert Belleman said the $100,000 would not cover the complete cost for the stage replacement. He said Saginaw City Manager Tim Morales and Mayor Brenda Moore indicated plans to pursue the additional funding using the city’s budget resources.

About 10:10 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 18, Richland Township firefighters responded to a fire at The Andersons Inc., an agricultural storage and supply company at 485 S. Hemlock Road. While crews were responding, Saginaw County Central Dispatch received several calls indicating flames were visible from the pump house. Richland Township Fire Command requested a second alarm, which brought in three additional fire departments. CHAPIN TWP, MI — An afternoon garage fire in rural Saginaw County has claimed the life of an 86-year-old man. While they were en route, Saginaw County Central Dispatch advised them a person might be inside the burning garage, Undersheriff Mike Gomez said. Mike Andreotti spoke with a neighbor who said he had heard an explosion, walked outside, and saw smoke emanating from the garage. He tried approaching the garage but was forced back due to the heat, unable to reach its door, according to Gomez. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined and is under investigation, Gomez said.

BUENA VISTA TWP, MI — A Saginaw County teen is facing two felonies after allegedly shooting a fellow teen in Buena Vista Township. At 9:14 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 8, police responded to a shooting outside a residence in the 800 block of South 26th Street. They arrived to find a 19-year-old male who had suffered a single gunshot wound to his leg, said Buena Vista Township Police Detective Alexis Frierson. The wounded teen resides at the house where the shooting occurred. McDaniel and the suspect were known to each other and argued before the shooting, the detective added.

Teens fishing find human foot along banks of Michigan river
TAYMOUTH TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Two teenagers have discovered a human foot while fishing in Saginaw County. The foot was found Feb. 26 along the banks of the Flint River in Taymouth Township, The Saginaw News reported Thursday. It has been sent to the state police Crime Lab where DNA from the foot will be compared to other collected DNA, Saginaw County Sheriff William Federspiel said. Taymouth Township is south of Saginaw and about 100 miles (160 kilometers) northwest of Detroit. The Flint River extends about 78 miles (125 kilometers) through several Michigan counties, according to the newspaper.

Charges filed against 2 Michigan police officers after state reviews
LANSING, Mich. – Two Michigan police officers were charged with misconduct in separate incidents involving allegations of excessive force and an illegal search, authorities said Tuesday. Former Saginaw Officer Adam Collier was charged with misconduct in office, a felony. He's accused of striking a handcuffed woman with his fist while she was under arrest for an alleged assault in July. In Jackson County, Blackman-Leoni Township Officer David Lubahn was charged with perjury and misconduct in office. “Law enforcement officers take an oath of office and we fully expect them to uphold that promise,” Attorney General Dana Nessel said.

FREELAND, Mich. – President Donald Trump spoke at a campaign rally in Freeland on Thursday. His campaign stop comes just one day after Democratic candidate Joe Biden made a stop in the state. Before departing the White House Trump highlighted a surge in virus cases in Europe to contend that the United States is faring well. Trump has characterized the rallies as “peaceful protests” and White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany said attendees were exercising their First Amendment rights. It was a similar situation in North Carolina, where Trump held a rally this week that drew a mostly mask-less crowd of thousands.
Michigan department publishes dam failure report
The report provides an update on the ongoing investigation into the Edenville Dam, plans to restore the Tobacco River's flow and the lack of coordination with the dams' owner Boyce Hydro. But while awaiting the conclusion of the investigation, EGLE provided the first of a series of reports requested by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer that will provide information about how the dam failures came to be and reviewing dam safety policies in Michigan. Coast Guard rescues 5 people, dog from sinking boat in Lake Huron
BAY CITY, Mich. – Five people and a dog have been rescued from a sinking boat in Saginaw Bay. The 50-foot vessel was halfway submerged and one person wearing a life jacket was in the water when a Coast Guard rescue boat arrived after 11 a.m. Wednesday, the Coast Guard said Thursday in a release. A line was tossed to the person who was pulled aboard the Coast Guard Station Saginaw River rescue boat. The other four people and the dog were helped aboard the rescue boat from the sinking vessel. Salvage crews were working Thursday on a plan to remove the sinking boat from Saginaw Bay, according to the Coast Guard.

Gretchen Whitmer has added three counties to her state of emergency issued as a result of two dam failures that caused devastating floods in the middle of the state. Arenac, Gladwin and Saginaw counties have been added to the state of emergency that was issued for Midland County. “I have declared an emergency to provide much needed assistance and have added Arenac, Gladwin and Saginaw counties to the declaration to ensure access to critical resources. Map shows flooding impact on roads across Gladwin, Midland and Saginaw counties
LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan Department of Transportation’s (MDOT) GIS Unit has created an interactive map listing all road closures related to flooding impacting Gladwin, Midland and Saginaw counties. The map includes closures for state trunklines (I, M and US routes), local roads and will provide updated road impacts until flooding concerns have subsided. More than 20 state trunkline and local agency bridges have been impacted by flooding and will require inspections prior to reopening to the public, according to officials. Flooding also caused severe damage to many bridges that will need to be repaired. “We’re asking the public to continue to follow any safety advisories issued and respect any road barricades you may encounter.
Mother, baby die in mobile home park fire near Saginaw
BRIDGEPORT TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A woman and her baby died Tuesday morning in a mobile home fire near the Michigan city of Saginaw, authorities said. Multiple fire departments responded to the blaze in a mobile home park in Saginaw County's Bridgeport Township. The mother and child were in one of three trailers that caught fire, authorities said. The cause of the fire wasn't immediately known, and the names of the victims weren't released. Bridgeport Township is about 80 miles (130 kilometers) northwest of Detroit.
Police: Man, 62, froze to death inside his mid-Michigan home
FREELAND, Mich. – A man found dead last week inside his mid-Michigan home froze to death inside the unheated mobile home, police said. Arnoul Jaros, 62, was emaciated but his cause of death was determined to be accidental hypothermia, Tittabawassee Township police said Monday. Officers and firefighters found Jaros' body “in a frozen state” when they forced their way into his home on Feb. 15, police said. Police said it had been at least two months since Jaros had been in contact with relatives, The Bay City Times reported. There was no electricity to the house and the temperature inside was at 25 degrees (minus 3.9 Celsius), police said in a news release.
Michigan man charged in estranged wife’s 2006 cold case slaying
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – A man has been charged with first-degree murder in the slaying of his estranged wife more than a decade ago in western Michigan. Michael Pagel, 55, was arraigned via video Thursday in Grand Rapids. Renee Pagel, 41, was stabbed to death in 2006 in her Courtland Township home, northeast of Grand Rapids. He moved with the couple’s three children to Saginaw County after the slaying, according to MLive.com. The investigation eventually was turned over to a cold case team.

FAA investigating Saturday plane crash in Saginaw County
The FAA is investigating a small plane crash in Saginaw County that occurred on Aug. 3, 2019. According to authorities, four people were in a Cessna plane that crashed at about 10 a.m. Saturday in Saginaw County. WEYI reports the plane crashed near the intersection of Spence and Fordney roads. The plane had left Flint and was traveling to Beaver Island. Authorities said the plane experienced engine trouble and a wing caught a guidewire, causing the plane to flip over.
