DETROIT – A learning center opened its doors in Detroit after receiving some support from a Motor City Match program grant. The Seeds of Knowledge Creative Learning Center is on West McNichols Road in Detroit and is run by a former Detroit teacher and principal. Chavonne McGowan owns the learning center. She said for years she wanted to open up a daycare/learning center. You want to be able to take your child and be able to drop them off in a very high-quality daycare center,” Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan said.

Family memorializes Detroit DJ Slick B on anniversary of his death

Detroit fast-food workers join protests across US aimed at raising federal minimum wage
DETROIT – The battle over the minimum wage heated up Friday. A Fight for $15 rally took place at a McDonald’s near the intersection of Livernois Avenue and West McNichols Road on Detroit’s west side. They want the minimum wage to increase to $15 an hour. Demonstrators want the incoming Joe Biden administration to raise the federal minimum wage within Biden’s first 100 days of taking office. The federal minimum wage hasn’t been raised since July 2009.
Armed man holding children hostage surrenders to Detroit police
DETROIT – Police said a man who was holding two children hostage inside a home on Detroit’s west side surrendered Sunday. Authorities blocked off the surrounding area while hostage negotiation and special response teams tried talking the man out of the home. Police said a handgun was recovered and the man was taken into custody. Detroit Police Commander Darin Szilegi said the children didn’t know the extent of the danger they were in. 2 men in serious condition after parking lot shooting on Detroit’s west side
DETROIT – Two men are in serious condition after being shot in a parking lot on Detroit’s west side early Sunday morning. Detroit police say at about 2 a.m. two men were sitting in a vehicle in the 18100 block of W. McNichols Road when someone reportedly walked up and shot both of them. The victims, 35 and 26 years old, were taken to the hospital and listed in temporary serious condition. The identity of the shooter is unknown at this time, according to police. Detroit police seek man who set off fireworks inside gas station on city’s west side
DETROIT – Police are seeking the public’s help to identify a man who set off fireworks inside a gas station in the 19800 block of West McNichols Road. Detroit police said the man walked into the gas station at about 9:45 p.m. on Sept. 3. A surveillance video showed the man lighting a box of fireworks before running out of the building. The fireworks reportedly caused damage to the ceiling tiles inside the business. DETROIT – Detroit police said a 54-year-old was injured in a shooting Saturday in the 22300 block of West McNichols Road. Police said the victim was walking at about 8:56 p.m. when an unknown vehicle approached and someone inside fired shots. The victim was transported by medics to a nearby hospital and was listed in temporary serious condition. Police said the culprit became irate, threatened the employee and broke a computer monitor before leaving the store. He was last seen wearing a white shirt and black pants. DETROIT – Shots were fired at Detroit police officers Thursday morning during a traffic stop along Telegraph Road near McNichols Road on the city’s west side. Police said the group taken into custody were looking for officers to shoot. 2 killed, 4 injured in shooting during Detroit gathering
DETROIT – Two people were killed and four were injured during a shooting in Detroit early Sunday morning, police said. Officials say at around 2:16 a.m. the six victims were at a gathering near San Juan Drive and McNichols Road when shots were fired by an unknown suspect or suspects. Two men, 21 and 24 years old, were fatally shot. Officials say the other four victims -- two men and two women between the ages of 20-30 -- were taken to the hospital and treated for non-fatal injuries. Woman in serious condition after drive-by Detroit shooting
DETROIT – A 21-year-old woman was injured in a drive-by shooting early Saturday morning. Police say around 2:03 a.m. the woman was at a gathering in the area of West McNichols and Meyers roads when an unknown vehicle drove by and someone inside fired shots, striking the woman. She was taken to the hospital and listed in temporary serious condition, police said. This is an ongoing investigation. DETROIT – Detroit police are searching for two suspects in connection with a shooting that killed one person and injured another on the city’s west side. The shooting happened around 7:25 p.m. Friday in the 10100 block of West McNichols road, police said. A 28-year-old man was killed and a 25-year-old man was injured, according to authorities. Officials said the victims were walking to a vehicle parked on the corner of West McNichols Road and Ilene Street.
