KALAMAZOO COUNTY, MI – Fresh doughnuts, breads and cookies fill the shelves at Renzema’s Bakery. Renzema’s Bakery, 214 Link Lane in Parchment, is a popular stop for people in the morning. Doug Knibbe, a longtime employee of Malnight’s Bakery, bought Malnight’s and Renzema’s Bakery in 2001 and combined the businesses, keeping the storefront in Parchment. He grew up going to Renzema’s Bakery, which was known for its doughnuts. “I’d say you can’t go wrong with any of our doughnuts,” Knibbe said.

The bakery is moving its storefront location from a plaza near Perry Road and Belsay Road to the corner of East Maple Avenue and Saginaw Road in Grand Blanc Township. In doing so, Cinnamom will add a drive-thru window, gain some visibility and fill more online orders, according to owner Rebecca Nagy. Cinnamom will offer free CinnaSwirls to the first 150 visitors to the new location, Nagy said. Many Flint residents will recognize the cinnamon rolls from their location in the Flint Farmers’ Market downtown. “Especially with COVID-19, people’s patterns changed and they started ordering online,” Nagy said.

It’s perfect weather for a steaming hot cup of hot chocolate and a bakery in Plymouth has marshmallows that are a national food award finalist to pair with it. The Blu Kitchen in Plymouth originally started as a place to find delicious macaroons, inspired by owner Adina St. John’s desire to recreate the treat her husband enjoyed during a business trip to France. Kila Peeples met with business owner April Anderson to learn about the surprising journey that led to her to create Good Cakes and Bakes in Detroit. Good Cakes and Bakes focuses on making Southern influenced baked goods, from German Chocolate cupcakes to St. Louis favorite Gooey cake. April says she has been baking since she was young girl, helping her mother out the kitchen. She was working in finance before she decided to change her path and open Good Cakes and Bakes. Mexicantown Bakery celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month
Known for their popular tres leches cake, made with three kinds of milk, rum, and soaked in a delicious sauce, Mexicantown Bakery showed off some of their other baked goods to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. The business is family owned, and sister of the owner Cecilia Benedict spoke with Live in the D live from Mexicantown. Benedict said that food is an important part of Mexican and other Hispanic cultures because it brings communities together in everything from celebration to mourning. Customers don’t have to go far for their drinks either since Mexicantown Bakery also serves a variety of Hispanic coffee and espresso beverages. Tati personally recommended the tres leches cake and cuban coffee as her go-to orders from the bakery.
Ypsilanti bakery works to help nearby small businesses during COVID-19 pandemic
