Archdiocese of Detroit urges Catholics to return to mass when general dispensation expires in March
DETROIT โ The Archdiocese of Detroit is urging Catholics to return to mass on Sundays and Holy Days starting March 13, when dispensation from the obligation will expire. The dispensation from the obligation to attend mass was first issued when coronavirus pandemic swept into Michigan in March 2020. The Archdiocese of Detroit has extended that dispensation several times in the past 10 months, most recently in November when it was announced it would be extended until Ash Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2021. Now, Catholics in the Detroit area are being advised to โto return to the heart and foundation of their faithโ as they resume other activities. These individuals should also prepare to return to Mass in recognition of its preeminence in our lives as Catholics,โ Archbishop Vigneron said in a letter to the faithful.
Sheriff: Pastor dead, 2 hurt in shooting at Texas church
WINONA, Texas โ A 21-year-old man who hid from police in an East Texas church was charged with first-degree murder and felony assault in a shooting that left the pastor dead and two other people injured Sunday, a local sheriff said. Authorities believe the suspect, identified as 21-year-old Mytrez Deunte Woolen of Marshall, Texas, broke into the church after police had left the area around 2 a.m. Sunday. Pastor Mark Allen McWilliams, 62, drew a gun and ordered Woolen to stop, Smith said, but Woolen grabbed the weapon and began shooting with it. Smith said the pastor, his wife and two other people were in the church at the time. It's unclear exactly when Woolen entered the church in Starrville, near Winona, about 100 miles (160 kilometers) east of Dallas.

Michigan pastor tells congregation to catch virus, โget it over withโ
HOLLAND, Mich. โ The senior pastor of a church in western Michigan has encouraged his congregation to catch the coronavirus to โget it over withโ and calling it โall good.โBart Spencer made the statements during a Nov. 14 sermon at Lighthouse Baptist Church in Holland, The Holland Sentinel reported. โItโs OK. Get it, get it over with, press on.โThe number of confirmed cases of the coronavirus (COVID-19) in Michigan has risen to 389,032 as of Friday, including 9,661 deaths, state officials report. On Thursday, the state reported 380,343 total cases and 9,580 deaths. The sermon was posted on the church's website and shared on Facebook, the newspaper said. Spencer later told the newspaper that he and several members of his family contracted the virus and have recovered.

Spires atop Detroits Sweetest Heart of Mary Church restored
DETROIT Two church spires on top of the Sweetest Heart of Mary Church are finally restored after three years. We started in August 2017 and Im happy to say we completed the project roughly two weeks ago, said Larry Wilk. She contacted me three years ago, August of 2017, with some very sad news that the spires were going to be torn down. Local 4 first told you about the project when they first started the remodeling project in 2017. Members of the church like Al Sebastian said looking up into the sky and seeing the two church spires, can catch anybodys attention.

Metro Detroit priests baptism found invalid due to wrong wording
UTICA, Mich. A Metro Detroit Catholic priest got an unwelcome and startling bit of news earlier this month. After emailing the question to one of his seminary instructors about the situation the word came back it was invalid. Because the deacon who did the baptism did not use the properly approved words the rest of the priests spiritual life has been deemed non-existent. But in a couple of weeks time the Archdiocese of Detroit saw to it that he received all the sacraments officially. Anyone concerned about their own personal situation is encouraged to contact the Archdiocese of Detroit.

Detroit archbishop extends exemption from attending Sunday Mass amid pandemic
DETROIT The Detroit archbishop has extended the dispensation, or exemption, from the obligation to attend Mass on Sundays and holy days of obligation for Catholics in the Archdiocese of Detroit until Monday, Nov. 23, 2020. This includes all travelers during their time within the territory of the Archdiocese of Detroit, Archbishop Vigneron announced Friday. While the dispensation from the grave obligation to attend Sunday Mass is in effect, all baptized Catholics are reminded of the grave necessity they have to keep holy the Lords Day, reads a statement from Vigneron. Appeals court to hear case of immigrants taking refuge in Detroit church
DETROIT Ded and Flora Rranxburgaj have lived at Central United Methodist Church for two years. In that time Floras health has deteriorated due to a serious health condition. The congresswoman made a passionate plea for immigration reform while urging the US Court of Appeals to allow Ded to stay in America. When Flora was diagnosed with a health condition 12 years ago they were allowed to stay on humanitarian grounds. I hope the judge and nice people let my family stay together, thank you to all the people supporting me, he said.

Catholics in Upper Peninsula required to wear masks at Mass
MARQUETTE, Mich. โ Face masks are mandatory for people who attend indoor Mass in the Upper Peninsula, starting Saturday, the region's Roman Catholic bishop said. โThough the scientific evidence on the effectiveness of face masks in limiting the spread of COVIDโ19 is still inconclusive, there is sufficient evidence to judge prudently that we should wear face masks to limit the spread of the disease,โ Marquette Bishop John Doerfler said. A mask may be uncomfortable, he said, โbut it is a sacrifice that we can make out of love for each other.โDoerfler oversees all Catholic churches in the Upper Peninsula. The Marquette Diocese had recommended masks when Masses resumed in May. The number of confirmed cases of the coronavirus (COVID-19) in Michigan has risen to 81,621 as of Saturday morning, including 6,199 deaths, state officials report.

Royal Oak church service hacked by people yelling racial slurs
ROYAL OAK, Mich. A church in the middle of Sunday service was interrupted by hackers yelling racial slurs. It happened at St. Johns Episcopal Church in Royal Oak on Woodward Avenue. The church said it was holding its service through a Zoom call when someone who appeared to be wearing blackface broke in. The person interrupted the service and reportedly shouted racial slurs and white supremacist language. Churches call for peace after violent summer weekend in Detroit
