The long-awaited road project will widen Michigan Avenue (U.S. 12), intending to ease congestion and make turning safer while adding an auxiliary lane to U.S. 23 north to I-94. The MDOT report considered the impact on neighboring subdivisions and other areas of traffic noise generated by the project. New ramps are being added at the U.S. 23 interchange, and acceleration/de-acceleration lanes are being extended on the highway south of Michigan Avenue.

Previously plans called for 8-foot paved shoulders on each side of what is slated to become a five-lane section Michigan Avenue (U.S. 12). The proposed 10-foot wide pathway will run along the south side of Michigan Avenue between Platt and Carpenter Roads, the entire length of the project. VAN BUREN TWP., MI – An 11-year-old Ypsilanti Township boy was killed Tuesday morning when he was hit by a car while running across the avenue, police say. Police and rescue crews were called at 6:20 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 31, to the area of Michigan Avenue and Denton Road in Van Buren Township for a report of a crash involving a pedestrian, according to the Van Buren Township Police Department. Crews arrived to find a boy, 11, who had suffered fatal injuries after being hit by a truck. The boy then attempted to run south across Michigan Avenue after the crash when he was struck by a pickup going east, police said. The boy’s mother and sister were both taken to Michigan Medicine in Ann Arbor to be treated for minor injuries, police said.

YPSILANTI TWP., MI — An Ypsilanti woman in a wheelchair was killed Friday night after being hit on Michigan Avenue, according to the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office. Just after 9 p.m. Friday, deputies and medical personnel responded to Michigan Avenue near Harvey Place after receiving a call from the driver of the vehicle involved, stating she had just hit a pedestrian. A preliminary investigation shows that the driver, a 36-year-old woman from Inkster, was traveling east on Michigan Avenue and the pedestrian — a 62-year-old Ypsilanti woman who was in a wheelchair — was in the roadway heading east. The Ypsilanti woman died from her injuries, WCSO said. There were four children in the vehicle, but no one in the vehicle was injured.

PITTSFIELD TWP., MI – A woman is dead, and a man was seriously injured in a crash with several trees along Michigan Avenue in Pittsfield Township south of Ann Arbor. Joni Schanck, 20, of Ypsilanti Township, was killed early Wednesday morning, Jan. 13. She was the passenger in a vehicle that left the roadway and struck a tree, according to the Pittsfield Township Police Department. Emergency crews were called at 3:34 a.m. to the area of Michigan Avenue and Sauk Trail near Platt Road for a reported single vehicle crash, police said. Schanck succumbed to critical injuries suffered in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
