KALAMAZOO, MI – A 19-year-old was driving about 20 mph over the speed limit when he was involved in a fatal crash, court records show. A breathalyzer test returned a .078 blood alcohol content and a blood draw showed Hudgins had a BAC of .048, according to the affidavit.

KALAMAZOO, MI -- A Portage man who led police on a wrong-way chase through downtown Kalamazoo pleaded guilty this week to multiple felony charges. Jeremy Thrasher pleaded guilty Monday, March 7, to fleeing police, two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon and a weapons charge for discharging his gun from a vehicle, Kalamazoo County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Scott Brower said. Thrasher was a suspect in a targeted shooting on April 13, in the 1800 block of Portage Street. The ensuing chase led police through residential neighborhoods and traveled the wrong way down the one-way Michigan Avenue into downtown Kalamazoo. The car ultimately crashed near downtown, at the intersection of West Kalamazoo Avenue and North Park Street.

PITTSFIELD TOWNSHIP, MI - Michigan transportation officials are holding a virtual public meeting on Jan. 25 at 5 p.m. to address the $30 million overhaul of Michigan Avenue and U.S. 23 in Pittsfield Township. The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will present a traffic noise analysis and technical report on the project south of Ann Arbor, scheduled to begin construction this year, then take questions. The long-awaited road project will widen Michigan Avenue (U.S. 12), intending to ease congestion and make turning safer while adding an auxiliary lane to U.S. 23 north to I-94. The MDOT report considered the impact on neighboring subdivisions and other areas of traffic noise generated by the project. New ramps are being added at the U.S. 23 interchange, and acceleration/de-acceleration lanes are being extended on the highway south of Michigan Avenue.

Robbery reported near Western Michigan University campus

KALAMAZOO, MI – A resident of an apartment near Western Michigan University reported being robbed at gunpoint early Wednesday, Nov. 17. The robbery was reported in the 1500 block of Lafayette Avenue, near Michigan Avenue and Howard Street, Kalamazoo police said. The work planned for next week comes after $412,000 of repairs to the bridge made throughout August and September. Walking, biking pathway added to Michigan Avenue overhaul near Ann Arbor

ANN ARBOR, MI -- Officials in Pittsfield Township, south of Ann Arbor, have persuaded Michigan’s Department of Transportation to modify plans for a $30 million overhaul of a stretch of road where Michigan Avenue meets U.S. 23 to include a 1.2-mile multi-use pathway. Previously plans called for 8-foot paved shoulders on each side of what is slated to become a five-lane section Michigan Avenue (U.S. 12). The proposed 10-foot wide pathway will run along the south side of Michigan Avenue between Platt and Carpenter Roads, the entire length of the project. The Michigan Avenue corridor project also includes a bridge replacement at the U.S. 23 interchange and is intended to reduce congestion at the intersection. New medical facility being constructed on site of former Saginaw school

SAGINAW, MI — Shaheen Development is building a new medical facility at Saginaw’s former John Moore Elementary School site. “This site is under construction with a new two-story 30,000-square-foot medical facility planned for completion next year,” said Al Warr, director of development for Shaheen Development. “The tenant of this new building will be released shortly.”Earlier this year, the firm completed the construction of a three-story mixed-use development at 218. S. Washington Ave., in downtown Saginaw, near Valerie’s Downtown, dawn of a new day coffee house, Erika’s Flowers, and the SVRC Marketplace. As of late August, the construction site on Court Street, just west of Michigan Avenue, was surrounded by temporary fencing and a sign reading “Uptown Bay City, Michigan Construction Traffic Only” was posted there.

VAN BUREN TWP., MI – An 11-year-old Ypsilanti Township boy was killed Tuesday morning when he was hit by a car while running across the avenue, police say. Police and rescue crews were called at 6:20 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 31, to the area of Michigan Avenue and Denton Road in Van Buren Township for a report of a crash involving a pedestrian, according to the Van Buren Township Police Department. Crews arrived to find a boy, 11, who had suffered fatal injuries after being hit by a truck. The boy then attempted to run south across Michigan Avenue after the crash when he was struck by a pickup going east, police said. The boy’s mother and sister were both taken to Michigan Medicine in Ann Arbor to be treated for minor injuries, police said.

Police in Kalamazoo find two missing children inside stolen car

KALAMAZOO, MI — Kalamazoo police found a stolen vehicle parked with children sleeping inside it Saturday. Police were dispatched just before midnight June 12 to a liquor store on Michigan Avenue near Western Michigan University for a stolen vehicle. Inside the stolen car was a 5-year-old girl and an 18-month-old boy, according to a Kalamazoo police news release. Officers soon located the car with the children inside, unharmed. 113-year-old Michigan train depot to be coffee shop, commercial space after $3.1M upgrade

Portage man who died in crash likely had medical problem, police say

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, MI – A 60-year-old Portage man likely suffered a medical problem before a fatal crash Tuesday, May 11. The crash happened around 1:30 p.m. on Parkville Road south of Michigan Avenue in Park Township near Three Rivers, St. Joseph County sheriff’s deputies said. Police believe that a “possible medical issue” led to the crash. Police determined that the man’s delivery vehicle was going north on Parkville when it went off the left side of the road. It struck a wire to a power pole and pile of scrap metal before it stopped in a field.

Road construction near Coles Bakery in Muskegon starts next week

MUSKEGON, MI -- A particularly bumpy section of pavement in front of Coles Quality Foods Bakery in Muskegon will be reconstructed, requiring a detour between Western Avenue and Lakeshore Drive. The road project that begins next week involves about a half mile of Michigan Avenue from Lakeshore to Hudson Street and Franklin Street from Michigan to Western Avenue. Traffic will be detoured on Washington Avenue and Division Street during construction. Work on Michigan and Franklin will include replacement of storm sewer and some water service, concrete sidewalks, curb, gutter and pavement. Construction on Michigan Avenue and Franklin Street in Muskegon that begins April 5, 2021, will require a detour.

Authorities investigate death of mutilated dog found on Ypsilanti Township road

YPSILANTI TWP., MI – Animal cruelty investigators are seeking information on how a dog disappeared from an Ypsilanti Township home and was later found two and half miles away dead, cut up and possibly shot. Tyson was found dead along the roadway and the family called animal cruelty investigators, officials said. JACKSON COUNTY, MI -- Single lanes of Michigan Avenue in Sandstone Township are closing, beginning Tuesday, Feb. 23, weather permitting. Crews from the Jackson County Department of Transportation will close a single lane of W. Ypsilanti woman in wheelchair killed after being hit on Michigan Avenue

YPSILANTI TWP., MI — An Ypsilanti woman in a wheelchair was killed Friday night after being hit on Michigan Avenue, according to the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office. Just after 9 p.m. Friday, deputies and medical personnel responded to Michigan Avenue near Harvey Place after receiving a call from the driver of the vehicle involved, stating she had just hit a pedestrian. A preliminary investigation shows that the driver, a 36-year-old woman from Inkster, was traveling east on Michigan Avenue and the pedestrian — a 62-year-old Ypsilanti woman who was in a wheelchair — was in the roadway heading east. The Ypsilanti woman died from her injuries, WCSO said. There were four children in the vehicle, but no one in the vehicle was injured.

Passenger killed, driver seriously injured after crashing into trees near Ann Arbor

PITTSFIELD TWP., MI – A woman is dead, and a man was seriously injured in a crash with several trees along Michigan Avenue in Pittsfield Township south of Ann Arbor. Joni Schanck, 20, of Ypsilanti Township, was killed early Wednesday morning, Jan. 13. She was the passenger in a vehicle that left the roadway and struck a tree, according to the Pittsfield Township Police Department. Emergency crews were called at 3:34 a.m. to the area of Michigan Avenue and Sauk Trail near Platt Road for a reported single vehicle crash, police said. Schanck succumbed to critical injuries suffered in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
