Arctic air is putting Michigan in deep freeze, dangerously low wind chills ahead
The coldest air mass of the season is heading across Michigan on Sunday, bringing plummeting temperatures and some dangerously cold wind chills, according to the National Weather Service. While some snow is expected in the northern Lower Peninsula, areas of the Upper Peninsula are under a Winter Storm Warning until Monday night with heavy snow accumulation expected in some areas. Snow will pick up in intensity early this evening in the Flint area and Genesee County. Once the snow is done Tuesday late morning or early afternoon, the Flint area will be on the northern edge of the heaviest snowfall area of Michigan. Parts of the Upper Peninsula are under a Winter Storm Warning, including Copper Harbor, Marquette, Gwinn, Houghton and Hancock, with up to 12 inches of snow possible, along with 40-50 mph wind gusts. In Lucas County, Ohio, just to the south, a Winter Weather Advisory was in effect during Monroe's Winter Storm Warning. In the meantime, a Lakeshore Flood Advisory was in effect for part of the winter storm time. Parts of Northern Michigan could see 16-24 inches of snow ahead of Thanksgiving
It’ll be a “white Thanksgiving” for parts of Northern Michigan this year. If you’re traveling Wednesday for Thanksgiving, here are four snapshots from our RPM model. It’s going to be a nasty travel day in our region...including increasing wind: gusts over 40 mph are possible, especially in the PM. Sporadic power outages are possible near Lake Superior, especially in Keweenaw County where gusts will approach 50 mph. With gusty winds expected, wave heights will also increase and would enhance concerns for lakeshore flooding and beach erosion.
