Meet Zak Pashak, the Detroiter who just bet big on the Lions to win the Super Bowl

That might as well be the official slogan of the Detroit Lions, the only team to exist for all the Super Bowls and never make any of them. Just don’t tell that to Zak Pashak, a Detroiter who marched into MGM Grand on Thursday evening to bet $1,000 on the Lions to win the Super Bowl, another $1,000 on them to make the Super Bowl, and another $1,000 on them to win the NFC North. At 25,000-to-1 odds, Pashak stands to win $250,000 if the Lions do win the Super Bowl, plus another $100,000 if they win the NFC and $25,000 if they win the division. He’s the second bettor to go big on the Lions this week, after someone else wagered $1,000 on them to win the NFC and another $500 on them to win the Super Bowl. He got a settlement from a race discrimination lawsuit. A bank wouldn't cash the check

Then he went to the bank this week to cash his settlement checks, but the Livonia bank refused to cash or deposit his checks. TCF Bank spokesman Tom Wennerberg said Thursday that TCF abhors racism and that it was not a factor in how the bank handled Thomas' requests. He said the checks Thomas presented displayed a watermark that read VOID when they were scanned in a web viewer. The bank also issued a statement Thursday: "TCF Bank is a diverse business serving a diverse community and we abhor racism in all forms. Opinion: Detroit is a great city. It deserves a great flag.

We have the drive, but we lack a great banner to rally behind: A great flag. Detroit has a flag , and Im glad to see it flown and used by businesses and residents. In the middle sits the city seal, portraying one woman weeping as the city burns behind her (representing the Great Fire of 1805) and another woman with a hopeful expression in front of a prospering city. While our current flag has a storied history, it is time to adopt one that showcases not only good design, but also our ability to rise.I will proudly fly Detroits current flag for as long as it is official. But to represent our great city with a great flag, we must adopt The Detroit Rise not to forget our past, but to show our hope for the future. You can learn more about The Detroit Rise Flag at detroitriseflag.com

Former Detroit Tiger Ron LeFlore made his major league debut 45 years ago today

Incredibly, during his rookie season, LeFlore was not the only ex-con on the Tigers roster. With an aging Al Kaline in his final major league season as the Tigers designated hitter, the Tigers took on rookie Robin Yount and the Milwaukee Brewers in a battle for last place in the American League East. The 26-year-old LeFlore, starting in center field for the injured Mickey Stanley, went 0-for-four with three strikeouts. LeFlore played parts of six seasons with the Tigers, before being traded to Montreal after the 1979 season. After two seasons with the Chicago White Sox, LeFlores unlikely major league career came to an end after the 1982 season but his improbable story still resonates all these years later.
