3 charged in connection with Farmington Zap Zone shooting
FARMINGTON, Mich. โ Three people have been charged by the Oakland County Prosecutorโs Office in connection with the Zap Zone shooting that happened on Feb. 24, police say. The suspects include Detroit resident Kevin Terran Bell,19, and Detroit resident Quanshay Richardo-Dougles Mason Jr.,17. Both men were charged with conspiracy to commit homicide and first-degree premeditated murder. The third suspect who is already in custody for an unrelated incident was also charged, but has not been arraigned. DETROIT โ Police said a man wanted for a double murder in Tennessee barricaded himself in a home on Detroitโs east side and later surrendered peacefully. The incident happened in the area of McLean and Dequindre streets. Officials said authorities went after him when his phone pinged in Detroit. Police said he barricaded himself in a family memberโs home. He was also wanted for a parole violation.

One of those teachers was a math teacher, who wore a tuxedo and treated remote learning like a formal affair. He works to capture the attention of his students any way he can. Steve Koponen is a teacher with Farmington Public Schools. Despite the challenges of COVID he has managed to make his most memorable year teaching even more memorably by his style of teaching.
Farmington Public Schools board approves increasing in-person learning
FARMINGTON, Mich. โ The Farmington Public Schools Board of Education unanimously voted 6-0 on Tuesday to increase in-person learning and relax the 6-foot social distancing measure in order to increase in-person learning for students. The district will continue other mitigation practices such as mask wearing, hand washing, cleaning and sanitizing, air filtration and student partitions. The board also granted interim Superintendent Bobbie Goodrum to make decisions for the district on how to move forward. Districts across the state are seeking clarification on the March 22 date.โAdThe district is currently looking to offer five four-hour days of in-person learning for elementary students with no in-person lunch, as well as four full days of in-person learning for middle and high school students. Families who have chosen remote learning and learning at a distance can continue to have their children learn in those models.
Police investigate shooting at Zap Zone in Farmington
FARMINGTON, Mich. โ Farmington police are investigating a shooting which happened at about 8:20 p.m. Wednesday at the Zap Zone location on Grand River Avenue. Investigators said officers were dispatched to Zap Zone after numerous 911 calls reporting gunfire with potentially three victims. Upon making entry into Zap Zone, officers were unable to locate any victims or evidence that anyone was hit by gunfire. โAlthough the investigation is ongoing, it is clear after reviewing the surveillance video at the business that the intended victim of the shooting was targeted. Detectives are continuing to work with the business reviewing additional surveillance video and collecting evidence,โ Farmington Public Safety Director Ted Warthman said.
Farmington school board hears praise, protest over continuation of hybrid learning
FARMINGTON, Mich. โ As Michigan students approach a full calendar year of learning primarily from home, there is growing impatience to get them back to full-time face-to-face learning. Farmington Public Schools currently has a hybrid model, meaning that about a quarter of students are in the building at the same time. The districtโs school board affirmed that thatโs the plan it would like to keep until next year. At Tuesdayโs board meeting, members read comments submitted by parents urging them to both reconsider and stay the course. Just 15% of districts planned to be fully remote, down from 35% in January.

Illinois teachers are not eligible for vaccines yet, but Chicago officials are providing virus tests on school grounds for staff. New York State expanded vaccine eligibility to teachers this week. Jeff Freitas, president of the California Federation of Teachers, said vaccinations have to come first, then schools can talk about reopening.

LANSING, Mich. โ Michigan health officials have issued citations to 13 businesses due to violations of the COVID-19 order put in place by the Department of Health and Human Services. โWe continue to see improvements in the numbers, and we know that the public health orders we have put in place are working. โThe number of cases, the positivity rate, and hospital capacity have declined in recent weeks, taking stress off our hospitals and health care workers,โ said Dr. Joneigh Khaldun, chief medical executive at MDHHS. โWe will continue to monitor the data and assess for any potential surges in cases after the holidays. Most food service establishments like restaurants and bars have helped play a critical role in the existing decline by following the order.โ
Man hit, killed while walking into CVS store in Farmington
FARMINGTON, Mich. โ Farmington police are investigating a fatal crash that occurred at the CVS store near the intersection of Farmington Road and Grand River. โIt was around 4:30 p.m. today (Friday) when we got a number of calls in regard to an accident,โ said Farmington Public Safety Director Frank Demers. โBacking out of the parking spot, her foot went from the brake to the accelerator. We think the vehicle probably went back about 20 feet before making contact with the victim who was walking into the store,โ said Demers. โPeople did what they could to help.โPolice said they donโt believe drugs or alcohol played a factor.

King is the Farmington Hills police chief now, but four years ago, he was one of the first investigators to arrive at Danielleโs Farmington Hills apartment. Jessica Perry, Danielleโs cousin, said they are just a few years apart in age and they grew up together. FARMINGTON, Mich. โ The superintendent of Farmington Public Schools as well as two members of the districtโs Board of Education have resigned, citing allegations of harassment and โdysfunctional behavior.โAccording to a press release from the district, superintendent Bob Herreraโs resignation was announced in a board meeting Monday. The resignation comes after Herrera filed a complaint against board member Angie Smith for harassment. โFarmington Public Schools will continue to serve the students and families well in our community; the District has a strong leadership team that will continue to move the District forward.โThe board voted to pass a resolution censuring Smith. At the end of the meeting, board member Pamela Green announced her resignation from her position as board president and board trustee, effective Nov. 20. Board vice president Terry Johnson also announced his resignation -- effective Nov. 21 -- with approximately 45 days left of his term.

Following the Guidance for In-Person Instruction, it says that Districts should consider remote instruction for the entire district. Disruption to FamiliesWe acknowledge the disruption of this constant move from in-person to remote instruction causes for families. โWe know that other districts in Oakland County are struggling, as well, with the factors listed above.โStudents in the Individualized Education Program will continue to follow the districtโs recommendation and remain in remote learning. The district is still planning to have middle and high school school return to in-person learning on Jan. 25, 2021.

Police warn of election scam involving โgroup of activistsโ going door-to-door to collect ballots
FARMINGTON, Mich. โ Police are warning Metro Detroiters about a new election scam involving a so-called โgroup of activistsโ who go door-to-door and offer to take ballots to clerks offices. The latest election scam has taken place in Farmington, officials said. Melanie Dequesnal, of the Better Business Bureau, said thereโs always a concern when someone shows up at the door unannounced, especially as election scams grow. Homeowners should be prepared for these types of scams, Dequesnal said. Unfortunately, this is just one of the many election scams theyโre following, according to authorities.
Former Michigan priest charged with second-degree criminal sexual conduct
FARMINGTON, Mich. โ A former priest in the Farmington area has been charged with sexually assaulting a minor. The charges are part of Michigan Attorney General Dana Nesselโs investigation into sexual abuse within the seven Catholic dioceses across the state. Gary Berthiaume, 78, has been charged with one count of second-degree criminal sexual conduct. The victim was 14 years old at the time of the assault, officials said. Berthiaume was arrested in 1977 for sexual assault of two other minors in Michigan.

'Mighty mice' stay musclebound in space, boon for astronauts

Farmington Public Schools investigate social media posts about teacher from former students outside district
FARMINGTON, Mich. A teacher with the Farmington Public Schools district has been placed on paid administrative leave as the district investigates social media posts that were made about the teacher by former students of another school district. A statement sent to Local 4 News from Farmington school district officials did not specify what was said in the posts, but said they became aware of the posts on Aug. 21. District officials said while the posts and its allegations were not made by Farmington Public Schools students, the district has initiated an internal investigation to thoroughly review the allegations to ensure the safety and security of our students, which remains our top priority.The teacher will remain on leave pending the internal investigation. The district said the issue was also referred to law enforcement. The district said virtual instruction will last for all K-12 students until at least Oct. 30.
