Some businesses around Metro Detroit could not open their doors to consumers on New Yearโs Eve due to a staff shortage. Today, Jan. 3, some McDonaldโs locations have added a help wanted note alongside serving their food to entice the frequent customers to join the understaffed franchise.
Grieving mother says Detroit police returned murdered sonโs car with evidence inside
DETROIT โ The mother of a Detroit man who was shot and killed on New Yearโs Eve says her sonโs car was returned to her with evidence from the shooting still left inside. David Grierโs mother, Temekia Grier, says there is no reason why she should have five of those casings and fragments in her possession while the investigation into her sonโs murder continues. Ever since her sonโs death, Temekia Grier has been trying to work with investigators to solve his murder. A few weeks later, Temekia was able to pick up her sonโs car from the Detroit Police Departmentโs (DPD) impound -- but she didnโt know that there was still evidence inside. The mother discovered five casings and rounds inside the car that were potentially overlooked by homicide investigators at DPD.

DETROIT โ Three people were killed in a crash on New Yearโs Eve in Detroitโs Corktown area. Detroit police said the crash happened around 10:40 p.m. on Michigan Avenue near 16th Street. An 87-year-old man was driving a 2017 Cadillac, traveling west on Michigan Avenue when his vehicle collided into a Mercury Sable, occupied by two people, police said. Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the crash. Winter weather advisoryThe National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory in anticipation of the hazardous conditions. The advisory is in effect for Wayne, Monroe and Lenawee counties from noon Friday through 12 a.m. Saturday (midnight Friday into Saturday). The advisory is in effect for Washtenaw, Macomb, Oakland, Livingston, St. Clair, Lapeer, Genesee, and Sanilac counties from noon Friday until 6 a.m. Saturday. Then, snow and freezing rain will move in from south to north, so those in our South Zone will see it before those in our North Zone. Rain and freezing rain will changeover to some snow between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. Saturday, which should end by 6-7 a.m. Saturday.

At midnight he will light a candle with his family and pray for everybody who has suffered from the pandemic.

As midnight rolled from Asia to the Middle East, Europe, Africa and the Americas, the New Yearโs experience mirrored national responses to the virus itself. Some countries and cities canceled or scaled back their festivities, while others without active outbreaks carried on like any other year. In Chinese societies, the virus ensured more muted celebrations of the solar New Year, which is less widely observed than the Lunar New Year that in 2021 will fall in February. Initial reports about a mystery respiratory illness sickening people in the Chinese city of Wuhan emerged exactly a year ago.
Michigan State Police urge people to not drink and drive New Yearโs Eve
โWeโve arrested over 70 impaired drivers this month alone,โ said Michigan State Police Lt. Michael Shaw. โWe know people are still going out, even if thereโs nowhere to go.โShaw said that number will likely increase on New Yearโs Eve. You can drink as much as you want, you can smoke as much as you want. The campaign was started in 1997 after Sandra Latham, a Detroit grandmother, was killed by celebratory gunfire sitting in her dinning room. DETROIT โ Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is asking residents statewide to celebrate New Yearโs Eve locally while remaining low-key. Speaking at a COVID briefing Tuesday, Whitmer specifically asked everyone to stay home for New Yearโs Eve and New Yearโs Day. โWe are coming through the end of 2020 in a stronger position than most, because of you,โ said Whitmer. Local 4 reporter Kim DeGiulio did a little digging and found out a few things that are safe to do around Metro Detroit for the upcoming holiday.
Michigan will not release daily COVID-19 data on 4 upcoming holidays
LANSING, Mich. โ Michigan officials will not release the number of daily COVID-19 cases or deaths on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Yearโs Eve or New Yearโs Day, the state announced. On Wednesday (Dec. 23), Michigan announced 3,443 new COVID-19 cases and 70 additional deaths, bringing the state totals to 469,928 cases and 11,775 deaths. The next update wonโt come until Saturday (Dec. 26), the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services announced. โWe wanted to give MDHHS staff some time off during the holidays,โ MDHHS Director Robert Gordon said. The same will be true after New Yearโs Day, with new numbers being posted Jan. 2 and Jan. 4.
