Bicyclist dies after collision with school bus in Saginaw Township
SAGINAW TWP, MI — Police are investigating the death of a bicyclist who collided with a school bus in Saginaw Township. About 2:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 10, police responded to a crash scene on State Street near Linda Street. Vehicles heading east on State Street stopped suddenly to avoid the bicyclist. The bicyclist then seemed to wobble while crossing the roadway and struck the side of a Saginaw Township Community Schools bus that had been heading west on State, Pussehl said. Street closures ending Nov. 1 in downtown Ann Arbor, but may come back in the spring
ANN ARBOR, MI -- Street closures in downtown Ann Arbor will officially end on Nov. 1, with plans to reopen again in the spring, according to organizers of the closures. Sandra Andrade, the executive director of the Main Street Association, said the association has tentative plans to bring the street closures back next year, if the community and association still want them. Parts of downtown Ann Arbor originally closed in April to promote social distancing and prevent the spread of the coronavirus. “At this time, State Street does not have any plans to have street closures next year,” said Frances Todoro-Hargreaves, the executive director of the State Street Merchants Association, in an email to MLive. All-way and four-way stops coming to multiple intersections in Bay City
BAY CITY, MI - Drivers navigating around Bay City next week will need to be aware of some changes to multiple intersections in the city. The City of Bay City announced modifications will be made to two intersections on North Water Street and a single intersection on State Street beginning Monday, Oct. 4, with all of the intersections being turned into four-way and all-way stops. The intersections of North Water Street and Center Avenue and North Water and 3rd streets will both become all-way stops. These will be all-way stops since there is no connecting roadway to the west of Water Street at these intersections, aside from parking areas. The city stated that implementing stop signs at these intersections will create safer locations for pedestrians to cross Water Street.mlive.com
Students excited about new ‘small format’ Target in downtown Ann Arbor
ANN ARBOR, MI -- University of Michigan students have expressed excitement over having access to fresh produce and other groceries with the opening of a “small-format” Target store on State Street in downtown Ann Arbor. “It’s nice to have a grocery store over here,” said Grace Jeon, a freshman at the University of Michigan, on Thursday. The small-format Target, just 12,000 square feet, is focused on providing essentials, such as cosmetics, to-go meals and dorm essentials. A similar store was opened last year in East Lansing, close to the Michigan State University campus. Downtown Ann Arbor Target to open in former Urban Outfitters location on Sept. 26
ANN ARBOR, MI -- Target will be opening its State Street location on Sept. 26 in the storefront that used to house Urban Outfitters, a Target spokesperson confirmed to MLive Friday. “The grand opening will be Sunday, Sept. 26, and we’ll have more information to share, including photos, closer to the opening,” said spokesperson Michael Wick. The Urban Outfitters formerly in the storefront closed in November of 2020. Target confirmed in December of the same year that it would be moving into the location, but did not disclose when. Non-functioning traffic light leads to crash at busy Saginaw Township intersection
SAGINAW TWP, MI — A busy intersection’s non-functioning traffic light led to a two-vehicle crash in Saginaw Township. Severe thunderstorms struck Saginaw County on Tuesday, Sept. 7, leaving numerous power outages in their wake. The Taurus, driven by a 53-year-old Saginaw woman, had traveled into the intersection without stopping, Pussehl said. “The traffic signal was not working because of the power outage,” Pussehl said, before reminding drivers how they’re to handle such developments. Downtown Ann Arbor street closures to continue through Nov. 1
ANN ARBOR, MI -- Weekend street closures for restaurants will continue until Nov. 1, Ann Arbor City Council decided at its regular meeting Monday, Aug. 16. Street closures have been allowed downtown since March 15 to allow businesses and restaurants room to spread out to reduce the spread of coronavirus. The State Street association’s decision to remove itself was prompted by complaints from businesses in Nickels Arcade, according to Frances Todoro-Hargreaves, the executive director of the State Street Merchants Association. This decision removes State Street, Maynard Street and part of East Liberty Street from the closures. Northern Michigan man killed in car-bicycle crash
BOYNE CITY, MI -- A 69-year-old Boyne City man died Saturday afternoon, Aug. 14, after he was involved in a bicycle-car crash, 9&10 News reports. Oversight commission calls for limiting police presence at Ann Arbor Art Fair
ANN ARBOR, MI — Ann Arbor’s police oversight commission is hoping to limit the presence of armed officers at the State Street Art Fair scheduled for July 15-17 downtown. “We would like to hold the State Street Art Fair with unarmed private security and fewer required Ann Arbor police officers on detail,” she told council Monday night, June 7. Police Chief Michael Cox said he’s open to having more discussions with the oversight commission, Art Fair organizers and others to talk about police deployment and to be sure the city isn’t over-policing or under-policing Art Fair, but he maintains police presence helps deter crime. Downtown Ann Arbor streets closing Thursday to make more space for businesses, pedestrians
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Starting Thursday, several streets in downtown Ann Arbor will close to cars allowing for more outdoor dining and shopping during the spring and summer. The Downtown Ann Arbor Pedestrian Mall will provide additional space facilitating safer physical distancing practices as community members visit businesses and restaurants. The closures will run from Thursday, April 1 to August 30. This year, some streets will be closed every day of the week while other closures will only take place from 4 p.m. on Thursdays to 6 a.m. on Mondays. Water main break leaves dozens without power in Downtown Detroit
DETROIT – A combination of heat and old infrastructure caused a Downtown Detroit road to buckle and a water main to break Saturday night. The water flooded the basement of the David Stott Building on Griswold Street, near Campus Martius, leaving dozens without power. It happened on Independence Day at about 10:30 p.m. A water main burst along Griswold Street between Michigan Avenue and State Street, flooding the intersection. Bedrock released the following statement:The Stott building is currently experiencing a power outage resulting from a water main break late Saturday evening. We are currently evaluating the extent of the damage and have reached out to all building residents as we assess necessary repairs.
